Subject: RE: BS: Late arrivals/ Guest Pest-Post Brawl From: YorkshireYankee Date: 18 Apr 04 - 08:00 PM Please welcome Mr Lookin-Atmee and his two faithful companions, who happen to be female sheep... Ewes Lookin-Atmee Raptor... it's an English thing. There's this brilliant radio show on BBC Radio 4 called "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue" ("Clue" for short), which describes itself as "the antidote to panel games" and is one of the few shows I listen to that *literally* makes me Laugh out loud. Favourite features of the show are "Mornington Crescent" and "Late arrivals at the ... Ball" -- amongst many others. You can read more about it on the BBC Radio 4 or BBC Radio 7 "Clue" websites. From the (Radio 7) website: This radio game show was first broadcast on 11 April 1972, having evolved from a previous radio programme, I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again. Chairman Humphrey Lyttleton, aided by his assistant Samantha and occasionally Sven, sets the teams tasks to complete such as singing the words of one song to the tune of another, acting radio charades, playing Mornington Crescent (an arcane game whose rules are much debated), or Cheddar Gorge, in which the teams compete not to complete a sentence. Colin Sell accompanies the musical rounds from the piano. You can listen to it on the web through Radio 4 (although it's not on year-round & is not on air right now) at the site mentioned above, or you can listen to re-runs of the programme on BBC Radio 7 here (scroll down to "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue"), although it *may* lose a little something in translation, as it often refers to British TV shows, politics, celebrities, newspapers, etc that will not necessarily be familiar to Americans. Enjoy! YY |

Subject: RE: BS: Late arrivals/ Guest Pest-Post Brawl From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 18 Apr 04 - 09:59 PM Seeing as how now the ABC (oz) has stopped playing the old BBC Radio shows (admittedly at unlistenable hours!) probably because they don;t have money any mmore, it's probably unlikely that we will ever hear this one in Australia. ISIRTA was where some of The Goodies honed their skills. Australia is closer to British Humour than US humour, at least amongst us older ones. Robin |

Subject: RE: BS: Late arrivals/ Guest Pest-Post Brawl From: YorkshireYankee Date: 19 Apr 04 - 08:30 AM ISIRTA was where some of The Goodies honed their skills. Interesting... I had assumed that The Goodies pre-dated ISIRTA -- prolly 'cos I heard ISIRTA (on Kansas City's public radio station) many years after The Goodies were running (on Detroit's public television station). I suppose it's entirely possible that these programmes appeared in a different order than they were actually produced... any UK 'catters happen to know? Australia is closer to British Humour than US humour, at least amongst us older ones. I'm sure that's true (even though I had to have the phrase "pommie bastards" explained to me after I moved here ;-) ). Of course, if you're really keen, you can listen online... Cheers, YY |
