Two songs from the singing of Lizzie Higgins (daughter of Jeannie Robertson):
The Jolly Beggar (where the beggar doesn't turn out to be James the Sixth but is just a decent ordinary guy) and The Laird o the Dainty Dounbie.

I'm not sure who wrote this, but I learned it from the Texas duo TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA.

LUCKY GUY

My old car blew up at the red light,
A screamin' ball of hellacious fire
Ce la Vie, Adios.
I hopped a bus with my bag of groceries
Damn thing busted - green beans, snow peas
Down the isle, look at 'em go.
I threw everything in my overcoat,
Tied the sleeves together and I give 'em a tote,
Come Hell or high water I'm gettin' these groceries home.
'Cause I'm a lucky guy.
I got a woman who loves me so, I'm a lucky guy.
I got a woman who tells me so, I'm a lucky guy.
I'm a lucky guy.

My boss said,"I sure hate to lose you,
But don't you know it's the age of computers?
Have you ever thought much about maintenance work?"
I.R.S.(Revenue Canada) sent me a letter
They're sellin' my house to the highest bidder.
Tell you what boys, You can keep my shirt.
'Cause I'm a lucky guy.
I got a woman who loves me so, I'm a lucky guy.
I got a woman who tells me so, I'm a lucky guy.
I'm a lucky guy.

All my friends want to know
What the Hell am I so happy about?
Why do I glow?
They just can't figure me out.
I may get low, but nothin's gonna keep me down,
'Cause I'm a lucky guy.
'Cause I'm a lucky guy.
I got a woman who loves me so, I'm a lucky guy.
I got a woman who tells me so, I'm a lucky guy.
I got a woman who tells me so, I'm a lucky guy.
I'm a lucky guy.
I'm a lucky guy.

Now that's a love song with a happy ending.

On a more serious note: When a Man's in Love (he feels no cold...) Well, they end up getting married, but only after she forsakes home and family due to his coercive ultimatum, so it might fall more in the "bittersweet" category. Clearly written by a guy.

When a Love is true (© Jim Hanlon)

It was a cold and grey December night as they made the out port town
Time enough to tie her lines when the wind did come around
It bore down now from the northeast head gaining strength from open bay
All hands were glad to be battened down safe from the breakers rage

Now the skipper's name was Jacob Long and a goodly man was he
So the crew all knew before they asked what Jacob's word would be
For a night on sure would be just reward after six long weeks at sea
So with a jar of rum and a hard days pay Jacob granted leave.

The crew all knew the story well of Jacob's painful past
All of the maiden sweet and fair his first love and his last
All of the cruel father who did steal his love away
To a hidden town along a shore with an unforgiving bay

Jacob he always stood the watch he seldom went a shore
So the crew this night did find it all as he made the galley door
He was cleanly shaved and neatly dressed a sparkle lit his eye
He said I've seen this place within a dream it's here my love I'll find

If you believe in destiny if you believe in love
If you believe in miracles and the good Lord up above
If you believe within your heart as only lovers do
A love will know no obstacle when a love is true

They made their way into the night through the bitter winter squall
Jacob led them like a man possessed to a tiny parish hall
Where the town folk all did dance and sing sweet fiddles filled the air
No mortal reason can explain what all did witness there

For the inside the tiny hall stood Jacob's maiden fair
Into each others arms they ran both lost to joyful tears
And at the very moment they embraced as two lost hearts were found
The winter sky grew clear and still or the tiny out port town

If you believe in destiny if you believe in love
If you believe in miracles and the good Lord up above
If you believe within your heart as only lovers do
A love will know no obstacle when a love is true

my favourite love song with a happy ending.

"the young servant man"

when the father saw him so tender hearted
twas down he fell on the dungeon floor
sayin' no true lovers should e'er be parted
since love can conquer an iron door
And now they're one to be parted never
and to roll in riches this young couple can
this fair young couple are blessed with pleasure
she's contented now with her young servant man

while Rambling Irishman is a love song, and has a happy ending- but the two things are not connected...

Eppie Morrie - starts out with a kidnapping but in the end the lassie wins out and goes of with her true love, who rescues her. Oh, and "The Laird o'Drum" where the Laird marries a shepherd's daughter, although they do experience class discrimination.

Yeah, the version of Geordie that ends happily is the one that June Tabor sings on "Silly Sisters"

"He clasped her by the middle small
And he kissed her lips so rosy
The fairest flower of womankind
Is my sweet bonny lady."

(Tell you the truth, that's the only version of Geordie that I'm familiar with... never heard the one with the hanging.)

A big favorite of mine of the happy-ending ilk is one of those cross-dressing hijinks songs: "Jack-A-Roe". Not just happy, hopeful!

"This couple they got married, so well did they agree...
This couple they got married, so why not you and me?"

:sigh: Maybe I should try dressing up like a soldier to woo the laddies... ;^)

Not folk but I listen to classic country in the car, so:

"Forever and Ever, Amen" (Randy Travis)
"Deeper than the Holler" (also Randy Travis)
that goofy one about "she keeps the home fires burning" (?)
"I'm A Stand-By-My-Woman Man" (?)

That's about all I know. My brother asked me to put together some music for his wedding and I told him I couldn't because I only knew five non-bloody love songs. I took the pictures instead, and he got a classmate to play the violin.

Pete Seeger once said the reason why there are so many songs about unrequited love is because when it's requited there are better things to make than music.

Hmm... Found this thread while looking for info on "Johnny Hart." One of the things I like about it is the fine happy ending. How about --

Crooked Bawbee
Rose of Allendale
Lass of Glen Shee
When You and I Were Young, Maggie
Put on Your Old Gray Bonnet
Long, Long Ago (really, it ends happily!)
You Are My Flower (that's blooming in the wildwood so high)

Jock O'Hazeldean is one of my favorite happy-ending love songs.

Bonnie Jean of Beathilnay (bad job of spelling, sorry)

There is a version of Geordie that has a happy ending
"She has looked blight (spelling) in Geordie face
And said noble Geordie I've bought thee
But the blood would've flowed upon the green
Before I'd lost my dearie"

or something to that effect. Actually it's one of the older versions.

My song, "That's The Ticket". After the two lovers match up their 2 sundered tokens, they reunite, and it ends with:

This young couple were childhood sweethearts,
She was a child, and he was a hood,
They lived a life of blissful true devotion,
Their song is ended--and I think that's good!

Love to all,

Art

Lord Bateman (a ballad with a happy ending!)
All Things Are Quite Silent (ends on an optimistic note, at least)
Dog and Gun (= Golden Glove)
Locks and Bolts

Most of those "broken token" songs end happily (even though she should be slapping him upside the head for pulling a mean trick pretending to be dead)
Claudy Banks - same story, without the token

There's plenty of pleasant pastoral romance in the Copper family repertoire - A Shepherd of the Downs is another prime example, The Wedding Song, and Spencer the Rover having been mentioned already.

No John No

My theory has been the unhappiness is more likely to lead to songs and poetry than happiness. For one, you're busy doing other things if love is going well, instead of sitting around alone.

From: RangerSteve

Flower From the Fields of Alabama

One fine evening long ago, when the sun was sinking low,\
Down in Alabama 'neath the sunny skies,
It was in the month of June when the roses were in bloom
by the roadside you could see them passing by.

Chorus:
She's a flower from the fields of Alabama,
Take her, for she loves you, this I know,
Health and love where e'er you go, are the blessings I bestow,
she's a flower from the fields of Alabam.

For her blessing and consent, on my journey then I went,
to the mother of the girl I longed to wed.
And as I drew near the place, tears ran down her old sweet face
When I asked her for her daughter and she said:

Chorus

Standing by my cottage door thinking of the days of yore
ANd my dear old wife is standing by my side.
In her eyes true love I see, and she means the world to me,
As she did the day I asked her to be mine.

Chorus

This has always been one of my favorites. There have been a few recordings, one that's available is by Burnett and Rutherford on Document Records.

Subject: Lyr Add: I HEARD THE BLUEBIRDS SING (Hank Snow...)
From: Ebbie

I Heard the Bluebirds Sing (Hank Snow and Anita Carter)

I met a girl out in the hills who gave my lonely heart a thrill
Her beauty seemed just like a breath of spring
And when I looked into her eyes, I thought of bluer summer skies
And when I held her hand in mine I heard the bluebirds sing

They sang of wondering   (wondering if he loves her)
Will she marry          (marry, if he'll ask her)
Will her heart beat       (heart beat true for him for)
Then and ever more
And when she's lonely    (lonely, is he near her)
When there's sadness   (sadness, will he cheer her)
Will they always         (always be together)
Until in death they part

I courted her for months on end until she promised we would wed
We planned on being married in the spring
All through the long cold winter months, it seemed that spring would never come
And every gloomy winter day I heard the bluebirds sing

They sang of waiting   ( waiting for the flowers)
And of counting         (counting every hour)
'Til the bluebird       ( bluebird chirps its welcome)
Into the world once more
And while we're waiting   (waiting for the sunshine)
We keep hating       ( hating every storm cloud)
That has gathered      ( gathered o'er the mountains)
To keep us far apart

Then when at last spring touched the earth, we married in the village church
Our wedding seemed just like a dream come true
Though many years have come and gone, our love is still as true and strong
As when I found her long ago, and still the bluebirds sing

They sing of loving       (loving every hour)
That I'm married            (married to my flower)
And we're happy         (happy ever after)
Since the day we met
And though we're older   (older love is sweeter)
We grow fonder         (fonder of each other)
We'll be sweethearts    ( sweethearts close together)
Until the end of time

Thanks Toadfrog. I do have the New Lost City Ramblers album and used to sing that song. Had forgotten how lovely it is.

Willa, I will look for these.

MY LITTLE CARPENTER is a magnificent song and my absolute all-time favorite in that genre. As indicated in DT, the NLCR's sing it. Traditional version is available on Kentucky Mountain Music (Yazoo), although I have not heard that.

That NCLR record (or my copy anyway) has no liner notes. Does anyone know more about the bacground of the song.

Queen among the Heather is also a fine song, I had never thought about it in exactly that way before. If John Riley appeals to you, Jack Monroe, Across the Rocky Mountains and Pretty Little Miss out in the Garden are on the same theme, and they gotta be in the DT. Cousin Emmy has a great version of Pretty Little Miss out in the Garden, does anyone know where that can be found.

I swore I would not start another thread so soon, but I did a search for happy love songs (three mentions in threads, no songs) and for love songs with happy endings (one thread, no songs). I think we need a thread like this. The sad love songs in my song book outnumber the happy (52 happy, and that only because I count the ones that turn out alright in the end). 56 sad, and that's because I'm holding back. The Ironical and Comical love songs (23 items currently) include some that could probably go in the sad catagory.

So what are your favorites? I'd like to add a few more and maybe learn some new ones or remember some I'd forgotten about.

Personal faves: Queen Amang the Heather, First Time ever I Saw Your Face, Bonny Jean Cameron, The Gypsy's Wedding, Love and Freedom...

Bekki
