From: Dave Bryant

Since I am about to start brewing the beer, I suppose it is time to make a full announcement that Linda (Essex Girl) and I are planning a Barbecue at our place at Mottingham, near Eltham on Sunday 6th June, 2pm - oblivion. My 60th birthday is 9 days later (but the following weekends are Maidstone Watt Tyler Festival and Knockholt) - so this will serve as a celebration that I will (probably) be reaching this interesing age. It will be a similiar "Bring it and Burn it" format to the ones which many of you have attended in the past - here and here are the threads for the ones which we held last year and you can find some piccies here in member's photos.

You should find top end of our garden greatly improved since last year, with more grass to sit on, and the new pond is finished complete with waterfall and expectorating frog. Barbecueing the goldfish is not permitted.

More details later, if you haven't been to one of our BBQs before - try looking at the links above.

So sorry Dave & Linda, but it looks like I'm not going to be able to get to this one :-( There's a wedding on the Friday up North & will probably combine that with Kirtlington Lamb. Guess you'll all have a Fab time though, maybe next year....

Just to keep you updated, I now have 15 gallons of beer brewing: 5 gals of strong Porter, 5 gals of Best Bitter, and 5 gals of a light amber ale. I hope some of you are going to come and help us drink it !

Expectorating frogs? Urgh.... mind you, did once see a vomiting tortoise in Spain.

Possibly we'll be there, possibly I might not be driving or on pills so I might possibly be able to drink something stronger than coffee this year! (Mind you, having said that, I've given up coffee so maybe stronger than lemon tea would be better....)

Seems a lot of people are reaching their O's this year.....

Woodsie, they're not parrots, they're parakeets, and yes they do fly over most evenings, but the tree they used to perch on has gone so they don't land.

Richard - I was going to suggest exactly that - I've got an old souped-up BSA .22 Airsporter with tele sights . . . . . we could make it a "Bag it and Burn it" event. Who wants to volunteer to pluck the whatsits though - we don't want the smell of burnt feathers. It's definitely "Close Season" for our goldfish though.

Refresh - Just to keep you reminded. Incidently, the flock of parakeets was around yesterday evening - they kept flying over and saying "Where's that bloody tree gone - it was here last year !".

We've just about finished laying all the new (cheapo) turf and can do with you lot to walk all over it as we haven't got a roller.

You can talk, John - there was a time when you'd laid most of it first !

Actually, I've just had an idea - perhaps I can persuade Essex Girl that this is the time of year for al fresco sex - Linda's buttocks would soon flatten out some of those hummocks.

The address is: 12 Porcupine Close, Mottingham, SE9 3AE - Phone Number 020 8857 1024.
If you don't know how to get to Mottingham, the jewel of SE London, here's a map.

Actually our road isn't that near the pub - which I would not recommend these days. I do however use the name "Bryant's Porcupine Brewery" for my homebrew with beers called "Old Spiney", "Prickly Heat" etc.

Are we likely to see you and Eileen, Dave ? - I know you now live further away, but we're only just off the A20 so it's not very difficult to get to us.

Update - I may still be confined to barracks - just spent 24 hours in hospital wired up to the mother of all tit tamper alarms. I mustn't get over excited or stressed out, therefore we will have to see how it goes on the day.

And yes, I am still covered in little sticky marks, I look like I was ravaged by an octopus. Dave, you have competition but at least you'll be able to see where it left off!

Well, it's only four days away and the weather forecast (at the moment) says it should be a fine hot day - just the sort of weather to help me get through the 15 gallons of beer. Remember to bring something to put on the barbie, even if it's a road kill you find on the way ! We should have enough bread, salad (esp Linda's famous Potato Salad) and other accompaniments to keep most people happy. We should also have some wine, cider, and soft drinks/mixers as well.

There'll be a PA and radio mics for anyone who wants to use them, and we should have even more grass space than last year - we've (well Linda has) laid at least 30 rolls of (cheapo) turf.

I know that quite a few catters can't make it, but everyone's welcome.
We're easy to find - only just off the Sidcup Bypass bit of the A20 - just a short drive from the M25 or Blackwall Tunnel. If anyone does need directions from anywhere, just PM me or Essex Girl.

Looking forward to seeing a good crowd as usual.

Liz - If can make it, I'll do my best not to get you too excited - on the other hand, I think even I'd find it impossible to compete with an octopus !

I'm sure we can promise you a comfortable chair and minions to bring you beer and cook for you.

No, it's a 10 minute walk from the station - I walk it twice every weekday this morning included. There are several buses too - any bus from the stop opposite the station - you want the next stop which is in Mottingham Road, right by the bottom of Porcupine Close.

Just to re-cap - the address is:
12 Porcupine close, Mottingham, SE9 3AE. Tel: 020 8857 1024.
You can find a map here.

If you are driving along the A20 (Sidcup Bypass) from the west (ie Blackwall Tunnel or South Circular) turn right at the Court Rd Junction (Opp "The Royal") - Sycamore Close is "No Entry" from Court Rd so turn left along Mottingham Road, left again into Leysdown Road, and immediate left into Porcupine Close, which then goes round a right hand bend. Number 12 is at the end of the close on the far right.

If you are driving along the A20 from the east (ie the M25) go straight on at "Fiveways" (the first traffic lights after the M25/A20 junction) then turn left into Leysdown Road (the turning just before the Court Road traffic lights - it's by the road sign for them) and just before you reach the the T junction with Mottingham Road, turn right into Porcupine Close.

Porcupine Close is not very wide and the end at which we live is the turning place, so please try not to block it up - you can always drop people off and park further down the road, or in Leysdown Road or the Sycamore Close bit.

I've decided to break with my usual names for the beer this year in a favour of the historical event which took place on the 6th June, nine days before I was born. The lightest brew is an amber ale (about 3.4% abv) which will be called "Gold Ale", the next is a Best Bitter (about 4% abv) which will be called "Sword Bitter", and the strongest is a dark Porter/Old (about 5.2%) which will be called "Juno Porter".

PS I think the best bitter was all used up, so no samples available for carry outs. That won't necessarily stop me from letting Breezy have it tomorrow night at Herga, although as it's a charity night for JST tomorrow I shall attempt to preserve my modesty and decorum.

Thanks everyone for making it a wonderful day - and to those of you who arranged my meeting with the er police officer - from the full frontal view she obviously was a genuine member of the "Fuzz" - I'm sure the pictures will be on view soon. Sorry not to have posted sooner, but Linda and I had a day at home to recuperate (and clear up) yesterday - and to try out a few ideas inspired by the local constabulary.

There were three and a half gallons of beer left - mainly "Gold" which was a bit lively, but also some "Juno" which I have filtered, blended, and re-primed - should make a nice brew for Knockholt.

Once again thanks to everyone who came and to everyone who performed - and I'm glad you all seemed to enjoy yourselves.
