Nor does he need defending, but I still would like to point out how he has developed a really distinctive, funny voice on the 'Cat.

He also seems to fit into what seems to be a characteristically British form of humor (or humour) that is a combination of understatement, curmudeonliness, and obtuseness.

Yes, when giving permission say "may". It's impolite to say "can".
