Last time I did this thread most people enjoyed it, but there were a few who resented the whole idea, calling it useless basically. I'm just wondering if anyone is listening to any music currently that is inspiring them and why. So, please if your moral compass is offended by such nonsense, just don't respond. I'll begin:

- Norman Blake "Morning Glory Ramblers" - Great old time songs plays with his usual heart and soul with wife nancy. Every album is a treasure.

- Jolie Holland "Escondida" - This lady is one hell of a vocal stylist! I like her phrasing and musical arrangments as well. A new talent! Played with the Be Good Tanyas at the beginning as well.

- Garcia/Grisman "Been All Around this World" - Man, just another incredible collection of their musical relationship. A mix of traditionals, a James Brown song, a George Jones tune, and a great Frankie Lee & Judas Priest with a perfect Basement Tapes-era "Luke the Drifteresque" Dylan imitation.

- Lightnin', Sonny & Brownie "Blues Hoot" - I finally found this on cd. A priceless collection recorded in '62 at the Ash Grove (I think).

Not new, but I finally tracked down 3 of Willie P. Bennett's CDs which I had been chasing for what seems like years. It is very difficult to come by Canadian stuff here in Oz. The 1998 album 'Heartstrings', which I believe won a Juno award, is delightful and encompasses a variety of styles. It has been the car CD for the past week. Lovely stuff! The other two - 'Tryin' to start out clean' and 'Hobo's Taunt' - are fine too, but not as adventurous as 'Heartstrings'.

Sol Hoopi "Master of the Hawaiian Guitar, vol 2" - classic 20s and 30s Hawaiian jazz. It's got everything, three part harmonies, amazing steel guitar playing, great melodies. . .

Sorry, that should be "Hoopii" with two "i"s

I'm also watching the new DVD from the Asylum Street Spankers. They play western swing, old time, jazz, and anything else that tickles their fancy. They play without amplification and sound fantastic. The DVD really captures the vibe of their live show.

Saw The Waybacks at a music festival last weekend and tho I sadly could not afford a CD right now, I've been hearing them in my head ever since. What a powerhouse this group is, wide range of materials, terrific delivery. I admire not only their musicianship but the amount of energy they bring to putting the music across. Just great.

I'm a little late acquiring Ginny Hawker's 'Letters from my Father' but I'm learning several songs from it that resonate within. Songs like 'I'll Not be a Stranger' (I'm acquainted with folks over there); 'Undone in Sorrow'; 'A Heart that will Never Break Again'; 'Long Black Limousine'... Wow.

There are also several songs from her 'Good Songs for Hard Times' that I've learned the last few days. Love the haunting 'I Just Steal Away and Pray', and 'Your Lone Journey' is heartbreaking.

Hey, stumd3, if folks dpn't like it tell 'em to **** off. I love these threads 'cos I might pick up on somthning new . As I type I'm listening to one of the numerous Charlie Parker selections. At work I've had the Lennon Jukebox blasting out. I'm lucky enough to have my own sounds when I'm working commercial radio gives me indigestion.

Nice posts so far! Another couple additions:

Joni Mitchell "Hiejra" - Wow! What a great album. Amazing lyrics (as usual) and stellar guitar work by Larry Carlton I believe.

Van Morrison "Common One" - I can't believe I overlooked this one. After years of hearing how bad this record is, my dad recently bought it. Amazing, albeit over the heads (perhaps) of a lot of more casual listeners. Lots of "meditative Van."

Skip James Biograph reissue - Doesn'e get any better than this guy. haunting, soulful readings of some of his songs. These Biograph reissues are pretty good. Too young to remember the originals, but and loving the other 2 I have - Son House & McTell.

Your recommendations are great, stumd3- I'll be hunting up that Lightnin'/Brownie-Sonny CD. Check out the latest Leon Redbone- it's terrific.

I've finally got round to buying a collection of Link Wray recordings, called "The Original Rumble" on Ace. Wow! An amazing guitarist. It is just a solid wall of instrumental sound. No vocals. And some great drums, as well. He also played on two Robert Gordon recordings in the late 70s, both released on a CD called "Robert Gordon with Link Wray." Rock and roll 50s style, but well done, and given a lethal bite with Wray's electric guitar. Wonderful stuff and heartily recommended.
