Subject: BS: Meet the new US ambassador to Iraq From: GUEST Date: 07 May 04 - 08:47 AM I'm so sure sending John Negroponte (biography here) will help remove the stain of US human rights abuses and torture in Iraq, and get the best third world democracy American money can buy on track. |

Subject: RE: BS: Meet the new US ambassador to Iraq From: Don Firth Date: 07 May 04 - 05:14 PM There are lots of sources for information about John Negroponte without having to go to Wikipedia. But lots of them tend to confirm what Wikipedia says. The man has a record one can check fairly easily. Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: Meet the new US ambassador to Iraq From: dianavan Date: 08 May 04 - 09:21 PM This confirms what I have always believed. The Bush administration does not care what you or I or any member of the public thinks about them as human beings or leaders of the nation. They have their own agenda and nothing will stand in their way. Doesn't even matter if they are re-elected. They will have achieved their objectives by Nov. and not Kerry or anyone else will be able to stop their world wide domination. I am grieving not only for Americans but for the entire world. |

Subject: RE: BS: Meet the new US ambassador to Iraq From: Ebbie Date: 08 May 04 - 09:30 PM Quote: His appointment to the UN post was a controversial one because of his involvement in covert funding of the Contras and his covering up of human rights abuses in Honduras in the 1980s. He is accused of sponsoring terrorism for supporting the Contra insurgency against the left wing Sandinistas, the first ever democratically elected government of Nicaragua. He is also accused of inciting Contra attacks on civilians. endquote Come on, open your mouth wide- just one more bite! See? Well! That's not so bad, is it! bush is unbelievable. What the HELL is going on. |

Subject: RE: BS: Meet the new US ambassador to Iraq From: DougR Date: 09 May 04 - 03:31 PM Buying votes, GUEST? Ta ta! Frowned on here in the U. S. of A. Not to worry anyway. The majority of the Mudcatters will vote (in the U. S. of course) for either Kerry or Nader. Max could probably use the $20 though anyway! DougR |

Subject: RE: BS: Meet the new US ambassador to Iraq From: Frankham Date: 09 May 04 - 03:34 PM It's about control. Bush believes he has been chosen by God to do this stuff. It's amazing how many people believe that they are being whispered to by God to do the worst sort of things. It used to be that "the Devil made me do it". All the more reason for Separation of Church and State. If Negroponte is chosen to dictate to Iraq, it's all over. The Iraqis win and Americans lose hands down. Is the Administration so removed that they don't know Negroponte's reputation as a death squad apologist? Thw world knows. Unbelievable! Frank |

Subject: RE: BS: Meet the new US ambassador to Iraq From: Ebbie Date: 09 May 04 - 03:55 PM http://www.derechos.org/nizkor/negroponte/eng.html: "John Negroponte was ambassador to Honduras from 1981-1985. As such he supported and carried out a US-sponsored policy of violations to human rights and international law. Among other things he supervised the creation of the El Aguacate air base, where the US trained Nicaraguan Contras during the 1980's. The base was used as a secret detention and torture center, in August 2001 excavations at the base discovered the first of the corpses of the 185 people, including two Americans, who are thought to have been killed and buried at this base. "During his ambassadorship, human rights violations in Honduras became systematic. The infamous Battalion 316, trained by the CIA and Argentine military, kidnaped, tortured and killed hundreds of people. Negroponte knew about these human rights violations and yet continued to collaborate with them, while lying to Congress. "President George W. Bush has nominated Negroponte to be US ambassador before the UN. Human Rights organizations in the US and Latin America have joined their voices in asking the US Senate to not ratify his nomination. Please join us! " http://www.fpif.org/republicanrule/officials_body.html: "But his resumé conceals the darker side of Negroponte. This may explain why the ambassador has, since his nomination, been ducking requests for press interviews, especially from reporters with some historical memory. As New Republic assistant editor Sarah Wildman put it, with Negroponte's nomination, "human rights activists did a collective double take." Indeed, Negroponte has a reputation, even among some U.S. diplomats who served with him, both for "doggedly defending U.S. interests overseas" and for "making sure human rights don't get in the way." Wildman finds this particularly problematic, since "one of the primary responsibilities of George W. Bush's new ambassador to the United Nations will be to berate countries like China, Burma, and Afghanistan for their violations of human rights." http://www.maryknoll.org/GLOBAL/ALERTS/no_negroponte.htm "This nomination is particularly egregious now that the international community has issued a vote of no confidence in U.S. human rights promotion by dropping our country from the UN Human Rights Commission. John Negroponte deliberately falsified State Department human rights reports throughout his time in Honduras. U.S. missionaries and many people of faith and conscience were murdered by the CIA-trained Honduran Battalion 3-16, which Negroponte at best overlooked and at worst oversaw. His nomination is an outrage, but sadly, it will pass through with minimal resistance unless constituents do something about it." |

Subject: RE: BS: Meet the new US ambassador to Iraq From: dianavan Date: 11 May 04 - 12:38 AM Amos - I think the American public should choose a day to express their grief to the Iraqis over the latest scandals. They might do this by wearing black. If enough Americans were garbed in black, it would at least show them that Americans are human. Thats the best I can think of for now. Maybe the women will have to protest this 'war' on their own. To them I would say, "NO SEX UNTIL THE TROOPS ARE BROUGHT HOME." That might wake up a few people. |
