'Mary Magdalene' - the monk whose name escapes me but Sooz will tell us. 'Delivery Delayed' - Stan Rogers (filled with amazement and love on the birth of his(?) child). 'Who Will Sing Me Lullabies?' - Kate Rusby (an eloquent expression of her love and the sadness of loss for her mate Davy Steele following his untimely death). Subject: RE: Grownup love songs From: cobber Date: 15 May 04 - 02:08 AM I heard John McCutcheon sing a song called "The Old Coat" which he said in the intro was written to fill his wife's request for a love song for those who had "been round the block a bit". She was apparently complaining that all the songs on the radio were by, for and about people half her age. |
Subject: RE: Grownup love songs From: YorkshireYankee Date: 14 May 04 - 09:55 PM I'm not familiar enough with his repertoire to list songs, but there must be at least one or two Richard Thompson songs that are fit the bill... any RT experts out there? Larry K -- hi! It's Vikki in Sheffield. Tell Robin I said hello. (I'd PM you, but you're a guest...) YY |
Subject: RE: Grownup love songs From: GUEST,Larry K Date: 14 May 04 - 09:37 AM A lot of good suggestions. I agree with Lies, and Lockeeper by Stan Rogers. I would also add "45 years" to the list. |
Subject: RE: Grownup love songs From: GUEST,gigix Date: 14 May 04 - 09:04 AM "The Devil's Only Daughter" is a great song fron Brian McNeill. The albun is called "The Busker and the Devil's Only Daughter". I did not find it in the Mudcat archive, so here are the verses: Now that I had a drink or two, just enough to tell you true, so if you keep from interrupting me again. You're quarter saint and quarter bitch, half cantakerous old witch, so hold your tongue while I am trying to explain. 'Cause it's time we fell to talking you and I 'cause every time I took a dram I heard you curse that you saved me from the gutter, but I kept you from the pawn and it seems to me the bargain could be worse. (Chorus:) For still I love you best of all, and we never shall be parted we won this far together and we'll finish what we started you're the Devil's only daughter but to leave you now would make me broken-hearted so I tell you now I love you best of all. God knows I've been untrue, how many times I wish I knew you could as well to count the stars up in the sky. But the truth be here to tell, you bring them to my bed yourself so you can laugh whene'er you hear me tell a lie. You saw me singing songs that painted jades and faithless whores and I watched you, and I wondered at the game 'cause you know the score damn fine between the lasses and the wine I'll be back without a penny onto my name. (Chorus) I've stolen from your eyes every tear you ever cried and I've gathered them to see what they may bring For the turning of the year can win the winter of your tears to the promise of a harvest in the spring. So though you're old and bruised and battered sit you down upon my knees and we'll have another drink before we go Put your head upon my shoulder, lay your back against my breast and have patience while I'm rosin' up your bow. (Chorus) |

Subject: RE: Grownup love songs From: GUEST,Russ Date: 13 May 04 - 07:16 PM Rose of My Heart is a relatively new song with an old sound. Credited to Hugh Moffat. The version I am familiar with was done by the Whitstein Brothers. Harmonies to die for. If you do a search on the title you'll find mp3 sample. Forgot one of my favorites. Love Minus Zero No Limit (Dylan) |

Subject: RE: Grownup love songs From: Celtaddict Date: 12 May 04 - 07:37 PM I think anything dating to Victoria's era which is still sung today has acquired a certain level of "tradness" anyway... |
Subject: RE: Grownup love songs From: mack/misophist Date: 12 May 04 - 10:42 AM It's semi-Victorian, not trad, but one of my grandmother's favourite songs was Silver Threads Among the Gold. |
Subject: RE: Grownup love songs From: Celtaddict Date: 11 May 04 - 07:52 PM Wonderful stuff! Obviously this is going to be a great collection. (I have others to add myself, too; Bogle's "Belle of Broughton" and several different ones called "Lady of (the) Autumn" and "Darling Ailie" and "Beat of a Lover's Heart," for a few.) My preference is toward traditional, or those that have the gift of sounding traditional, like "Belle." There are some good contemporary ones too though, even "pop" like Billy Joel's "You're My Home" that definitely should be on the list. AnneMC, there are several Civil War songs based on letters home from men who died in the war. (Maybe they wrote more letters then?) If you are interested yourself in any more of that ilk, let me know, as I know some that are fairly obscure. Thank you all and keep them coming! (The hope is that this will develop into not only a special concert or series, but a couple of CDs.) (Male singers, though I tend to agree with Martin Carthy and many others that a song has no gender and a good singer can sing from another's viewpoint, as happens in all traditional songs. Some, though, like Linda Allen's "October Roses," change entirely with a different singer; that one was a sort of "woman power" song from her, but a wonderful grownup love song by Danny O'Flaherty. |
Subject: RE: Grownup love songs From: izzy Date: 11 May 04 - 03:43 PM Not quite folk, but Jacques Brel's Marieke and J'aimais are both beautiful and poignant. Marieke to my mind has something magical about it...I don't know whether there's an English version of it. |
Subject: RE: Grownup love songs From: AnneMC Date: 11 May 04 - 03:21 PM How about a Civil War (?) love song : When the Roses Bloom Again Well, they're strollin' in the gloamin', When the roses are in bloom. A soldier and his sweetheart, brave and true. And their hearts are filled with sorrow, For their thoughts are of tomorrow, As she pins a rose upon his coat of blue. "Do not ask me, love, to linger, "When you know not what to say. "For duty calls your sweetheart's name again. "And your heart need not be sighing, "That I'll be among the dying. "I'll be with you when the roses bloom again." When the roses bloom again, And the sun is on the river: The Mockingbird will sing it's sweet refrain. And in the days of Auld Lang Syne, I'll be with you, sweetheart mine. Oh, I'll be with you when the roses bloom again. With the rattle of the battle, Came a whisper soft and low: "Our soldier, he is fallen in the fray." "I am dying, I am dying, "And I know I've got to go, "But I wanna tell you before I pass away." "There's a far and distant river, "Where the roses are in bloom, "And a sweetheart who is waiting there for me. "And it's there, I pray you'll take me. "I'll be faithful, don't forsake me. |

Subject: Grownup love songs From: Celtaddict Date: 09 May 04 - 08:36 PM I am gathering a list of grownup love songs. There are so many that strike me as adolescent; any that focus on the physical appearance of the loved one, or involve any whining, are to my mind essentially juvenile. But what about adult songs about mature love? Fire in the Lake The Bramble and the Rose What ones come to your mind? |
