ha, ha not really but I got your attention and I'm lookin' for the lyrics to the song Kilkelly. The First line goes"Kilkelly Ireland eighteen and sixty my dear and loving son John" I have the words but I want to check them with another version so If you know where I can get them it would be greatly appreciated if you let me in on it. Sorry to dash your hopes of finding sex songs.

It's in Rise Up singing, do you have that?
Actually, bold Fenian man, I almost didn't open this thread with that header.
If you don't have Rise Up Singing (you should), I can type them in, I know them. But it's a long type; lotsa verses, so let's see if our DT base gets back up, and or someone figures out where to grab them and paste.
Blessings,
Barbara

Okay, Fenian, the search machine is up and running again. See that box, upper right? Put 'kilkelly' in it, without the quotes, it will pull up the song for you.
And here's a tip. You would have gotten the answer faster if you'd captioned the thread accurately.

Barbara

Oh, the sexual life of a camel
Is stranger than anyone thinks
For it's said that a romantic camel
Once tried to make love to the Sphynx
But the Sphynx's celestial channel
Was filled up with sand from the Nile
Which accounts for the hump in the camel
And the Sphynx's inscrutable smile

Heard late at night around a very drunk campfire....

One thing that interests me about bawdy folk songs is how many consist of euphemisms and metaphors -- "The Cuckoo's Nest," "The Coachman," "The German Clockwinder," "Wanting Seed," etc. Freud didn't invent "Freudian symbolism."

Subject: Lyr Add: THE STEGGIE^^
From: skw@
Date: 19 Oct 98 - 02:55 AM

This thread having aroused me sufficiently to make use of the links Joe so thoughtfully provided, I was surprised not to find the following song in the DT - 'The Steggie', as sung by Rod Paterson. Maybe the Mudcatters can actually help me. I took the words down from the LP 'Two Hats', and I think I got it all - except for the line with the question marks. I've been trying to work it out for years, but no idea would come. Could it be a Freudian thing?
I'm awfully sorry I still can't provide tunes, for this one is absolutely sweet. Actually, I took down the words at the request of a Hamburg folk group who were thinking of doing the song because they liked the tune so much. When they saw the words written down they were literally rendered speechless. I haven't heard them do the song yet...
The lines marked >>> are repeated in the other verses. (Do you call this a refrain? a burden? certainly not a chorus?)

Any further translation required? - Susanne

Oh there is an auld wifie at the top o' yon hill
>>> The green leaves sae green o
And she keeps her hoosie whaur ye get yer fill
>>> And ye ken pretty weel what I mean o
She keeps her hoose o' the braw guid ale
>>> The green leaves sae green o
And a bonnie serving lassie fir tae carry it ben
>>> And ye ken pretty weel what I mean o

A sodger laddie gae'd there ae nicht
And he's ca'd fir a beaker o' her braw guid ale
He's ca'd fir a beaker, an' ca'd fir anither
An' the lassie an' the sodger they got bedded doon taegither

Noo she's put her hand oot ower his wame (wame - belly)
Sayin', What is that like the dreg hard time (???)
It is my steggie that I ride on (steggie - stallion)
An' my wallet fir keeping a' my confidences in

Oh he's put his hand oot ower her wame
Sayin', What is that like the brists on a swine
It is my wellie that I draw frae
Ye can water yer steggie in it if ye may

What if my steggie it should fall in
You can aye grab a hand o' the breadth roond the brim
He's put in his steggie sae plump and fat
And he's pu'd it oot again like a half-drooned rat

[1981:] Arthur Argo got [this] (text only) from an elderly relative, and himself put a tune to [it]. (Hamish Henderson, Alias MacAlias 148)

The blues are rich in songs of double-meaning. In fact, the blues masters seem to have been obsessed with sex. That isn't even counting old rock and roll tunes like Big Ten Inch.

" A Little Piece of Wang" comes to mind as a folk song, as do many tunes done by Oscar Brand. There is a song on the A.L. Lloyd/Ewan MacColl "Blow Boys Blow" (always wondered what the sailors meant by that) where everything is described in nautical terms -- "Me shot locker's empty, me powder's all gone."

Robertson Davies, the author, mentions a song entitled "The Stub Of Me Old Cigar" and for years I've wondered what the lyrics might be.

I ignored this thread because I thought a smutty mind had wandered into the cafe and was trying to get attention... then I saw that it had 20 postings to it today, and thinking it was about ancient bawdy songs (now why does that somehow give it an air of historic respectability?) I opened the thread. KILKELLY!!! why the heck didn't you just title it that?? Well, anyway, I had on my mind the Robert Burns volumes I was writing about in the Scottish songs thread, because he admitted that his great flaw was bawdy songs. Jean Redpath actually recorded the one called "Nine Inch Will Please A Lady" which has lyrics that I can't even write here, let alone sing in public. His song "The Fornicator" is his public admission to having a child with Betty Paton, one of his father's servants.

"The Steggie" is obviously a close relative of a song I got from ome of the "When Dalliance was in Flower and Maidens lost their Heads" series from many years ago...a collection of Elizabethan bawdy songs.

There, the story was of a woman who had an inn, and her daughter, who entertained a 'Trooper' (with the mother's consent). The last 3 verses are VERY similar...I'll enter it all as it was on the record soon..perhaps Bruce O. can enlighten us as to the origin)

Many years ago I won a whole stack of Oscar Brand Bawdy Songs Albums in an all-night poker game. Many of them were prurient parodies of traditional songs such as "Little Redwing;" others were truly fine works, such as "The Bastard King of England," (purportedly by Rudyard Kipling). After nearly thirty years of performing, I can't remember a single one in its entireity, but I still have the stack of albums. Maybe someday I will find something on which I can play them. Then I'll consider posting lyrics.

tsk! Bill...everyone with folkie interests needs to maintain a RECORD PLAYER...(I have some of those albums, too...and it would drive me crazy if I could not play them....along with other amazing item which I doubt will ever be put on CD..)(I can't afford to redo everything on CD anyway...even if they DID release it!)

The good news is, record players are often available cheap now with a little looking...there is even a source for needles...called 'Needle in a Haystack'. I have 500-600 albums which I have not worn out...wonder what everyone else's way of coping with the demise of records is?

Arthur Argo's song is entitled "Ye Ken Pretty Well What I Mean" on his phono record, 'A Wee Thread O' Blue". It's a version of the one mentioned by Bill D, which is "The Trooper Watering His Nag" in 'Pills to Purge Melancholy", V, p. 13, 1719.

THE TROOPER WATERING HIS NAG

There was an old Woman liv'd under a Hill,
Sing Trolly lolly, lolly, lolly, lo;
She had good Beer and Ale for to sell,
Ho, ho, had she so, had she so, had she so;
She had a Daughter her name was Siss,
Sing Trolly lolly, lolly, lolly, lo;
She kept her at Home for to welcome her Guest,
Ho, ho, had she so, did she so, did she so.

There came a Troooper riding by,
Sing trolly, &c.
He call'd for Drink most plentifully,
Ho, ho, dide he so, &c.
When one Pot was out he call'd for another,
Sing trolly, &c.
He kiss'd the Daughter before the Mother,
Ho, ho, did he so, &c.

And when Night came on to Bed they went,
Sing trolly, &c.
It was with the Mother's own Consent,
Ho, ho, was it so, &c.
Quoth she what is this so stiff and warm,
Sing trolly, &c.
'Tis Ball my Nag he will do you no harm,
Ho, ho, wont he so, &c.

But what is this hangs under his Chin,
Sing trolly, &c.
'Tis the Bag he puts his Provender in,
Ho, ho, it is so, &c.
Quoth he what is this? Quoth she 'tis a Well,
Sing trolly, &c.
Where Ball your Nag may drink his fill,
Ho, ho, may he so, &c.

But what if my Nag should chance to slip in,
Sing trolly, &c.
Then catch hold of the Grass that grows on the brim,
Ho, ho, must I so, &c.
But what if the Grass should chance to fail,
Sing trolly, &c.
Shove him in by the Head, pull him out by the Tail,
Ho, ho, must I so, &c.

Etc. Yes I have Arthurs Album A Wee Thread of Blue' And was at a party where He sang untill dawn Is it true that Arthur has died ??. I understand that he passed away several years ago. Fenian, let me clarify.
I have NO problem with people asking for sex songs. Regulars here know I have a fairly large repertoire of those myself.
It did bother me that you asked for a song that is sad and lovely and has no mention of sex in it, under the heading "Sex Songs". I don't find that clever, just annoying, as if you had introduced Kilkelly in a concert as a bawdy song.
As you can see, heading a thread "Sex Songs" gets you sex songs. Enjoy.

Barbara

The sexual desires of a camel...

A true folk song that. I think everyone sings their own version.

We used to sing it to the tune of 'The Eton Boat Song' but Oscar Brand sings it to 'Botany Bay'

Speaking of sex songs... there's a bit that a friend of mine sang for me, and I've been wondering since what the song is, and if there's more to it:

"Long and thin goes too far in, It doesn't please a lady Short and thick will do the trick And make a proper baby."

With a tune exceedingly similar to "Pop Goes the Weasel"

James Barke cited "Pop goes the weasel" as the tune and gave a very slightly divfferent version of Kiwi's song above in his preface to the Barke/Smith/ Ferguson edition of 'The Merry Muses of Caledonian'. I don't have the original 1959 British edition, but the 1964 American one, where the song is on p. 28. He said the song was from school playgrounds.

The late A.P.HERBERT [writer, humorist, member of parliament, writer of 'musicals'incl:THE WATER GYPSIES, etc...] says in autobiography that he and a friend [I've forgotten who!] originally wrote this song. He was much amused when people told him of this great song that they'd found and then sang him HIS OWN SONG.

Said he was delighted that it sounded 'authentic' enough to 'pass' as a trad.folksong.

Like Tom Leher - attending a place where a muso claimed that his "Irish Folk Song" was traditional...

He kinda would have liked the royalties, but at least people would likely be singing the song after he was dead - as long as they remebered who wrote it...
