We had several threads (now closed) about global warming, for instance this, so some of you might be interested to hear about global dimming:

Look forward to a darker world (Nature, May 19th, 2004)

I don't know whether you have access, so I'll give you the first two paragraph that tell the amin thing:

It's official: the world is getting darker. Scientists now agree that as cloud cover and particles in the atmosphere increase, the amount of radiation reaching us from the Sun is falling. And although they are nervous about raising the idea, they think the effect may help protect us from global warming.

The phenomenon, called global dimming, has been quietly discussed in scientific circles for the past decade or so. Since the late 1950s, scientists have observed a 2-4% reduction each decade in the amount of solar radiation reaching the Earth's surface, which is thought to be caused by particles and clouds in the atmosphere scattering the light.

Too bad, Wolfgang. I think your thread really merited only one post, but it didn't work out. Nice try, though.

"The phenomenon, called global dimming, has been quietly discussed in scientific circles for the past decade or so."

Well, that corresponds closely to the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991. That event is said to have produced more pollution, both gas and particulate, than cars have produced in 100 or so years of their existance. Although "greenhouse gases" are supposed to let light in, then block the reflected energy (heat) from leaving the atmosphere, particulates block the light before it can get to the earth. Result is "global cooling". Trouble is, all discussions I have heard on the subject of global warming/cooling/dimming are overshadowed by politics and posturing.

Here are some facts and pictures of the mountain:

... and I thought you were starting a thread about the global lessening of intelligence, especially as reflected in the number of hostile anonymous GUESTs turning up in Mudcat...

Its proportional. The dimwitting of the nation is manifested by the ensorcellment of the voters in the hairy eyeballs of the Gerrymanderin' Thief. I know we have elected stupid men before, but w hole dang cabinet full of them?

It is as though the entire nation has succumbed to Seasonal Affect Disorder.v They are so depressed by crimes already levied on them or in their name they can't stand up and say no any longer.

Hey, daylight or no daylight, I refuse to be terrorised by an American -- especially one who can't even tell the truth about what state he is from.

They trying to tell us that it's now 8-16% darker now than when I were a lad? And here's me thinking that it were just old age.

Perhaps worth considering here is the observation I read somewhere that the ice ages actually occurred in warmer periods for the globe.

As I recall, it was thought to be as a result of greater snowfall because of greater atmospheric humidity because of higher temperatures.

I thought you were starting a thread about the global lessening of intelligence (Foolestroupe)

I thought this thread had something to do with I'Q.'s (Bobert, one post and one and a half hours later)

I guess you've proven yourself right, Bobert, but it's called local dimming, not global.

Wolfgang, my first thought was what kind of an effect this would have on plant life. I notice in the article they say the more diffused light is actually better and only plants in northern greenhouses would suffer. Thanks for posting the links.

Dodos were destroyed by the actions of Man and the animals Man brought into the environment that the Dodo was in. Not the same as the Dinosaurs, at all... We get to take credit for the Dodo and the Passenger Pigeon: We SHOULD be using our present cloning research to try to restore those species. We have the DNA material.

i remember there were wonderful sunsets when pinatubo filled the sky with particles. I also remember seeing ash over 500 miles from mt. st. helen's which had remained there for nearly 10 years (in Idaho)

How about the radiation from all the man made light sources that are very visible very far away from this planet? And the fact that the all that cloudy shit is pollution trapped by the greenhouse gases, and building, building, building?

Not to worry, I suppose. Global dimming will cancel out global warming, everyone can keep driving their SUVs, we need not retrofit any of the coal plants, we can keep burning chemicals, using the pesticides, etc. because global dimming will make everything turn out JUST FINE.

What could possibly motivate people to engage in raucous arm-waving from the dubious shelter of anonymity? I would think it would be degrading, humiliating, abasing in the extreme. But some people seem to pursue it! Strange world, stranger occupants.

From the air, the world is getting more lit up at night...so are we all. The night sky is becoming more obscurred because of light pollution.
