Subject: Lyr. Req: My Best Friend Is Moving Away
From: Rabbi-Sol
Date: 23 May 04 - 07:49 PM

I listen regularly to a radio station that plays 24 hour non-stop folk music on the web. The site is www.radionewfoundland.net
Besides old traditional Sea Music, Celtic, & Irish favorites, they have a lot of modern day folk sung by local artists. Much of it deals with the deteriorating economic conditions due to the depletion of the local fishing grounds. Consequently, people are moving from Newfoundland to other parts of Canada, and many of the songs reflect this theme. One such song is sung by a young girl lamenting the fact that her next door neighbors are moving. It is called " My Best Friend Is Moving Away". I only heard it once and remember a line from the chorus. It goes " I live by the ocean I play in the sand, I'm proud to be living in dear Newfounland" It is a very touching and moving song. Any help would be appreciated. SOL ZELLER

Hi Sol, I listen to Radio Newfoundland on a semi-regular basis, too. I usually record it as it comes down, and later separate out the songs I want to keep. I use Jetaudio to record, Soundforge to edit.

Well, anyway, I have the song you asked about, but have not yet figured out who is doing it. I know it is not Joy Norman, who was my first thought. One quibble about CJYQ is that they NEVER announce the songs. Some can be figured out from bits of the lyrics, and can even be traced to the actual recording. Some I still have no idea. There are several recordings I would like to have.

Tell you where to look is GEST's site of Newfoundland Lyrics. GEST frequently posts here, and may well see this and answer it for you. If not, I will take a stab at it in the next day or so.

Forgot to mention, though you'd likely see it when you got there, but GEST has a message board and can also be Emailed from his site.

Subject: Lyr Add: MOVING AWAY (Johnson / Johnson / Cormier)
From: GUEST,Dale
Date: 23 May 04 - 11:07 PM

Got to thinking about my reputation as a researcher, and figured I'd set out to find it myself.

It is by a group called the Cormiers with an interesting makeup, a brother and sister, her daughter and his son: Gordon Cormier, Loretta (Cormier) Johnson, Mallory Johnson, age 14, and Randall Cormier, age 13. Since their CD was released in 2002, Mallory Johnson would have been 12 at that time. Note that the song was written by her, her mom, and uncle.

MOVING AWAY
M. Johnson / L. Johnson / G. Cormier

I am a school girl 11 years old
And I watch as my friends have to pack up and go
Their parents are leaving and I don't understand
Why they have to leave Newfoundland

I don't watch the news but I heard Daddy say
The economy's broke, they can't fix it today
I'll give my allowance, one dollar a day
To keep them from moving away

CHORUS:
I live by the ocean and play in the sand
I'm thankful for living here in Newfoundland
I hope Daddy's job is not taken away
Like the families moving away.

I was out in the backyard my best friend came by
To tell me she's leaving, I started to cry
She heard her mom saying there's no other way
We're going to McMurray today

Please don't forget all the good times we've had
The camping, the fishing, the trips with our Dads
You look at the stars and I'll look at them too
And you'll know that I'm thinking of you

CHORUS

(Showing my geographic bias, I thought she was singing "Missouri" instead of McMurray!)

Thank you Dale. I appreciate your prompt response to my inquiry. I am curious about the programs Jetaudio & Soundforge that you use to record and edit. I was under the impression that live streaming audio as well as archived files in the streaming audio format could not be downloaded and recorded on CDs. Could you tell me more about your setup, how to run these programs, what equipment is needed and how much these programs cost ? Thank You SOL ZELLER

Sorry to take a bit long to respond, too many things going on.

Jet Audio is the easy part. I have it turned to the download page, but you can get to all they offer from that page, screen shots, etc. What you want is jetAudio 6.0.4 Basic, which is a free download. It does have somewhat of a shortcoming in that it will not record in MP3. It does have a number of other choices ~~ I use WMA, and convert to MP3 later.

It is a little bigger download than a lot of players, but in view of what you get, I don't think it is objectionably so.

Here is a Review at Download.com You can download it from that page, too.

I found using it is pretty intuitive. I use the timer function, so that it kicks off after 2 1/2 hours, so the files do not get unmanageably large.

So that takes care of the recording part. The rest is a bit harder, especially to do it right. Of course, if you don't edit the files, you can burn them straight to disk by asking jetaudio to record 75 minutes or so at a time. Jetaudio will even do that for you, though I have never used that feature.

Sound Forge used to be put out by Sonic Foundry, but now you'll find
Sound Forge at Sony The full version is about $400, the cheaper version which they have decided to call Screenblast is about $70 from them, but I am sure that if you shop around you could get it cheaper.

Alternately, you can look for a FREE editor. Go back to that download.com page and search for sound editor. You should get 150 or so, including a free trial of Sound Forge. Don't know what it will let you do. Truthfully, I have not used any of the free things, as I am quite satisfied with Sound Forge. I know sound editors have been discussed many times here at Mudcat, so a bit of searching about will likely turn up some good info, better than what I have given you.

Can't promise any quick responses, but if you have additional questions, you can email me at dale8r@hotmail.com and I will get back to you with my regular address. It could take a while.

Stan. I have an MP3 of the song that I purchased legally, but that does not give me the right to e-mail it to you. To do so would be cheating the Cormiers and Mallory Johnson out of royalties for this song which they so justly deserve. We here on Mudcat are performers who strictly observe copyright laws and look out for each other. In order to do the right thing I would suggest that you e-mail the Cormiers at their website and tell them that you wish to download just this one song "Moving Away". Ask them how much they want and offer to send them a check for that amount if they would e-mail you an MP3 file. I am sure that they would be cooperative if you show them this courtesy.

Thanks I will try that I agree with you about paying for it(hope you didn't think I was asking for someone to just email me the song I am very willing to pay for it), it is just that I looked everywhere for this song and was unable to find it on any of the pay music sites. Thanks for your help
