So Hussain & Thorpe have almost guided England to anothe win but,
1)should Hussian stop in the team.

2)who are they going to drop to let Vaughn back in.

3) Should Vaughn drop down the batting order

4) Should Jones be keeping wicket instead of Reid.

What do the catters think.

1) Jones is a much better batsman than Read. Read *might* be a better keeper, but the difference is not enough to warrant change at Test level. Your keeper needs to be able to do both jobs. Jones can, Read is only barely a Test batsman.

2) There is a strong case for dropping both Hussain & Thorpe. Both are ageing. Neither contributed much in the first innings against NZ. If Strauss proves that this match wasn't a fluke, the argument becomes more compelling. Keep H & T for the next test, perhaps, but if the top order keeps producing runs, look at the middle order batsmen & ask for how much longer they can fulfill the team's needs...

3) As to Vaughn, I've no idea, whichever question you're asking!

Thorpe certainly should stay around as long as possible, as he's the only batsman England have who is - or has been - worldclass, and younger players can learn from him. No chance of Hussain being dropped either, now, but he'll still have to do OK in the next test to hang in for the third. So... it looks like Butcher for the chop.

If England had a Jim Laker or Derek Underwood in the team, I'd go for Read as wicketkeeper because he's far better at that than Jones, and would feature in more dismissals. As things stand, I'd stay with Jones. Jones no doubt conceded more extras than Read would have done, but the difference in their batting more than compensates.

Well Hussain has said that he might decide to retire now, which would solve the problem. Personally I hope that he doesn't. He batted really well today, and fielded brilliantly throughout the match.

I can't agree with you about Thorpe being the only world-class batsman we have, Peter K.

Michael Vaughan was the number one batsman in the world - according to the PriceWaterhouseCoopers rankings published on 13th April 2003. His batting average was 50.93. Not too shoddy...

I'm unsure on the Read/Jones arguement. Jones is certainly a much classier batsman, but he's a messy keeper. Certainly his batting more than compensates for a few byes, but if he drops people who then score a hundred it will be a different matter.

Anyway, these are nicer 'problems' than the English team has had in a good while!

I think if Nasser wants to go then let him, it is better to go at a time of his own choosing, than to be dropped after a run of poor performances. The boy done well, and if he goes now, he will be remembered with affection.
