After installing windows XP PRO. I downloaded the service packs and by mistake the windows media player 9.0.Now I can't seem to install Real Radio, which I need to listen to BBC Radio Five Live...Each time I get to 83% of installation,then it packs up!!! Any help would be grateful.

I have both on my system XP Home, with no problems.
You could try system restore, or your resrore disc.

It depends on what settings are in place in the Windows Media Player. Those programs are nasty about setting themselves us as default for all sorts of things each time you install one. Open Windows Media Player and set the preferences for the types of programs it will run. I have mine dumbed down pretty far so that I can select which program I want to use when I come across a file I want to play.

I've steered away from Real Audio format once it became clear that the later versions were spyware. There was a thread in the last year or so which gave details of a site which maintains 'legacy' versions of popular applications, including but not restricted to older versions of Real Player. I'd love to re-visit this site if anyone knows its whereabouts please?

In addition could someone please remind me how to record (say) an hour's worth of online radio archive (Real Audio) without having to sit and listen to the whole thing? For locals I'm trying to retrieve some excerpts from a number of recent ABC Radio National programmes.

In answer to both Scouse and John, I recommend using Jetaudio It will play real audio files without the constant nagging and spyware of Real Player and will also record a file as it downloads. You do have to go into the preferences and tell it what format to save the file as and set the length you want it to record. I record an hour or so worth of stuff, then transfer to Sound Forge and edit to my heart's content, just saving the parts I want.

It has been my primary player/recorder for over a year.

I have Jet Audio 3.1 on disc. The new 14 Meg download is a mite too big for me to reliably download. Dja'reckon 3.1 will do the job?

Start by downloading "Download Accelerator"

It'll allow you to download big files a chunk at a time...

Then get JetAudio6...

3.1 probably won't do much of anything anymore...

There are many 'download accelerator' type programs - some of them may have adware inside - if you remove it with AdAware etc, the 'download accelerator' program may stop working, remember.

I use DAP and have NEVER had a problem...

Download.com reports only a 32% approval rate for Download Accelerator. It does mention the spyware. I have never used such programs, but possibly Clinton can tell you how to disable the spyware.

Download.com also lists download time for Jetaudio 6 as 36 minutes with a 53K download. I would not find that too intolerable, though I would try to walk away from the machine so as not to slow down the process. If the download fails, all you lose is the time unless you have to pay extra for your connection time. I have a flat rate, whether the internet is on 1 or 24 hours per day.

Jetaudio does list a download of Jetaudio 4 which is about half the size. I never used that, so I can't say how good it might be.

The free version of Download Accelerator carries annoying adverts, but that's the price you pay. It isn't spyware (or "rudeware") in the way that recent versions of RealPlayer have been. JetAudio - the version mentioned above - tells me everytime I start it that it wants Real Player Version 9 support files - it does work for some types of files, and also keeps advertising the paid version for all sort of 'extensions'. It offers to download the Version 9 Real Support Files, but I get the error

Error downloading file. (#99, Line 13)

I did have version 9 on the system, but Version 10 'fixed' that... :-)

The Real Legacy Page does not show Version 9..... but does have Versions 8 & 10...

A recent review of a few commercial programs for capturing streaming audio is up at PC Magazine's site. I don't do much audio capture, so I can't comment on the programs; but it might be of interest if you're wondering what features are available, and which are significant. I noted that the products reviewed vary quite a lot in which broadcast formats they can catch, and in which formats they allow you to save. There's also quite a bit of difference in ability to do things like track separations automatically, manually, or not at all…. The programs covered are generally around $30 (US).

Streaming Audio Capture Tools makes you flip through about 3 pages. It does show some additional links in sidebars – not to more info on audio capture, but maybe to other subjects of interest(?). Probably not.

You can get the whole thing in one screen by clicking on "Print" at the bottom of a page. I tried linking direct to the "printable" version, but they seem not to want you to connect directly there.

A couple of the programs do appear to offer "fast save" without listening.

There's one "Mac only" program included.

for a super downloading tool, with NO adware or spyware, try NetTransport

and I 3rd JetAudio for many uses.....though it is not 'quite' as easy to learn the interface as in some others.
