Simon Mayor and Hilary James are on at Cherry Burton Village Hall, Near Beverley, East Yorks this Saturday June 5th.

Apart from the quality of this duo (Simon is I think the best Mandolin Player around) concerts in Village Halls are rare and should be encouraged.

Its £8.50 and to get a ticket booked ring 01964 551257. 8 pm. Bring your own drinks!

Should be a good do. I've got Simon's mandolin tutor (book & CD)but those who have heard me play shouldn't take that as any reflection on the tutor which is excellent. In fact the CD is so good I listen to it on its own just for pleasure.

I first met Simon and Hilary when they were 'Spredthick' back in the early seventies. Two fine musicians and realy nice people. GO SEE .

Haven't seen them in a while but they used to always use instruments made by Mike Vanden so I'm guessing it's from him.

I recall Spreadthick Well from their Reading days. They had the excellent Phil Fentiman on bass. I wouldn't miss them if they were on in my town either.

Out of interest...what's your connection with Reading Alan? I only ask as I went to uni there and through that had contact with the uni folk club and a couple of local sessions.

Wrong continent for me, alas.

Coincidentally, I listened to two Hilary James cds just last night, Love, Lust & Loss (with Beryl Marriott), and Burning Sun. As a duo with my favourite mandolinist (Simon of course) you can't be disappointed.

I've heard that there's a new cd in the works but I haven't noticed it on the website yet.

Go see them, and if anyone remembers, say hi from Mike of Goderich who still waits for their return.

Get Simon to do the Parrot song (it is hilarious)
We get good stuff for our village hall through the Rural and Communities Touring Scheme which has subsidised such artists as The Poozies, Kathryn Tickell and Karen Tweed (and Hilary and Simon) in our neck of the woods. (Lincolnshire) I think there are similar schemes elsewhere - look out and sign up!

I used to work at Borocourt Hospital near Peppard in the mid seventies. I spent many happy evenings at the nurses' hostel, um, being friends...
At that time, I used to frequent The Cap and Gown on Kings Road. It was great. I would get out at the bus station, smoke something nice as I passed Reading nick and then get to the pub in time to see Spredthick, Heron, Gerald and Josephine Moore,John James,Bully Wee, Paul Downes and Phil Beer, Bill Boazman, Mike Cooper, A Poke in the Eye, Richard Digance, Johnny Collins, or any one of the marvellous artists who appeared there. I also knew Liam Yapp and Tony Flood well, because they used to run the Downs and Outs Folk Club which took place at my father's pub, The Waterloo in Cholsey. It's possible that we attended the same gig at some time. Leadfingers and I agree that we probably met back then.
Sorry about the thread drift everyone else. I can recommend Simon and Hilary though - great musicians and really nice people.
