"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"
For me personally, beauty is the Spring, when trees, flowers and other "growing things" are important.....what represents beauty to you?

Fall. Beauty contains pity because we know it must die.

I make a fairly decent living as a visual artist - a potter. That must mean that other people think I create objects of beauty. I guess they wouldn't spend their money on them if they thought they were ugly. But I don't believe I have ever created anything truly beautiful. I try to create something beautiful every time I go into my studio, but I never succeed. Beauty for me is a Platonic ideal. It is a goal, but one which is beyond the capabilities of mere mortals like me to achieve. The best we can hope for is to eliminate ugly and hope that the result is an approximation of beauty.

I can see beauty in the works of other artists such as Brancusi's Bird in Space or Dale Chihuly's blown glass, but I wonder if any artist's work has ever lived up to his own personal ideal of beauty.

I suspect we have cheapened the concept of beauty in overuse. There are many things in a wide range that I call beautiful, including manmade things. But when I thrill to the depths of what is real beauty to me it's usually something sensuous like light shining through greenery, or the cool sun of autumn warming the rich odors of fallen leaves or snowcapped mountains reflected into still waters, emotions for which I have no words.

Beauty in what? A art? In nature? In women?

In art, I go for medieval cathedrals. Awesome tributes to the men who made them.

I like beauty in nature as represented in the countryside. Rolling hills, hedgerows and patchwork fields, and pleanty of trees. I preferablylike to see it in summer.

As for women, that is more difficult. Perfectly proportoned features with a small nose and mouth, large eyes, and flawless skin.

Besides, my family, the female form, the first bass of the season to be fooled by my clumsy angling, certain guitars...

...there's a spot on the Niagara Escarpment (Ontario Canada) which overlooks Georgian Bay that reveals no evidence of white man's arrival on this continent and returns me to some primitive state every time.

Oh, and the Mudcat.

Peace, Mooh.

Beauty? My fiddle.

Not necesarily the music I make on it but the shape, size, intricacy, delicacy, the incredibly bizarre way it needs to by sawn with a bow, and most of all the immense power which lies latent within such a frail and relatively tiny object.

Well that's how I feel about it anyway.

When I was young and I looked at aged faces, I saw wrinkles. Now I look at those faces, and see the bone structure, the shape of the person's face, their expression, and all the lines and experience on their face. Sometimes, I see an old face that is beautiful, through all of this.

I was with my ex partner's mother when she died. She was lying back, and for some reason her face was very relaxed, and she looked young, and glowing. She looked young, innocent and beautiful at that time, despite having looked very old and haggard in the months leading up to her death.

Well Freda, I have to agree with you again.

My mother-in-law is the most beautiful creature alive. She's 92 years old. She raised 13 kids with an alcoholic husband. She attends mass almost every day. She is a tower of strength.

She never complains. She speaks softly. She's radiant. She walks proudly. Her eyes sparkle. She's kind. She's forgiving. I could go on and on. I think she's an angel or a saint or both. I have never encountered a human being with such grace and beauty.

As far as nature goes - give me phosphoresence in the summer sea.

Nature, mostly. Since death is a necessary and desirable part of life, I'm trying to learn to appreciate decay. It's harder to do. Wing tip shoes and oil refineries, too. True ugliness has it's own beauty.

I know quite a few beautiful people - young, old, thin, fat - but they all have this luminescent quality: something inside them just shines out like a beacon.

I haven't expressed it very well, but if you're beautiful inside it will show on the outside

The shade of blue I have seen in only two places- Looking down into a running nuclear reactor, through 17 feet of water, and looking down into the heart of a glacier near Banff.

The smile of my muse.

The view in any direction from the summit of Ben Nevis on a fine, clear Summer's day. The approach to St. Kilda, close-hauled on a windy, sunny day, with a plume of vapour streaming downwind from the summit of Boreray. Sunset at anchor in Loch Scavaig (Skye) with the Black Cuillin silhouetted against the deep blue of the sky. Mrs. Johnny. And Emma Bunton. :0)

for me beauty is in anything that makes me joyful - a smile from my grandchildren, a piece of music that gets deep down into my soul, the English countryside at any time of year, the man I love just saying 'hallo love'.

There is beauty all around us if we look.

Kendall said that to him beauty is simply the absence of ugly.

I tend to disagree. I don't think ugliness and beauty are antithetical at all.

If you look at Picasso's Guernica, there is no question in my mind that it's ugly. And yet, that ugliness invokes an emotional reaction to which I must assign the concept of beauty.   It's in the evocation of the emotion that the beauty lies.

I'm sure you (or least most of you) will agree that prettiness is not beauty. But, as I see it, a painting, we'll say, that's merely pretty misses being beautiful by not evoking an emotion appropriate to the thought.

A third vote to Madcap Laughs and that solo from Dark Side. I remember the first time I heard it. I became instantly dizzy, and that moment of breath-taking joy was delicious.

Those memories of beauty...I had another one yesterday at Regent's Park, wandering amongst the thousands of roses. There was one in particular, called Double Delight-I bent down to smell it, and it was as if someone had opened up my brain and poured pure light inside.

MORE MORE! Share your beauties with us!..xx..e

To Amergin. Yes pal....when I look in my wardrobe mirror,if in bed, I can see the beauty of the fields, hedges, trees and other stuff of nature. But if you mean when you look in the mirror you see the beauty of yourself then you don't know the significance of your minute role in the beauty of nature and have some sort of delusions of grandeur. Wonder what other people would think of your reflection.
Having said that, I suppose you must be extremely beautiful anyway.
Our God thought so when He made you.

in the morning when i wake up, i look through my window. I see trees and leaves, and the sunshine and shadows on the leaves, and a bit of blue sky. it's always lovely!

sometimes in the evening I like to go and sit in our backyard. we have opened it up and share it with neighbours - i sit on a bench in the garden, under the stars, and enjoy listening to the frogs.

these are beautiful moments!
