Subject: where to publish essays?

Ay up,

As some of you know I have been asking for help/ideas/info for a few school projects I've been doing.

There are some finished products which I've written, and it seems ever such a waste to just have them read by my tutor and then filed away forever in a dusty drawer. I'm not suggesting they are gems of literacy or anything, but does anyone know of archives or publications which might be interested in carrying edited versions?

One's about the role of folk/trad music in the education system, ones about the revival in keighley in the 70's and ones about 'Swing Low' new contexts and meanings.

I owe some of you copies already as you contributed...and I'm aware I've been rubbish at sending them on. Having just finished for the year I might get round to it soon, then again... (let me know if you want any of them PMing)

I'm a bit scared about putting them up for criticism, as they are just undergraduate drivel, but I thought some people might be interested to know some of what is going on up here in Folk and Traditional music degree land.

Let me know what you think, and feel free to tell me to shut up and go away if you like.

Love Fay xxx

PS I'm starting research for my disertation next month so watch this space for more opportunities to be my body of knowledge (now there's an offer!)

Fay
I would be genuinely interested in reading your stuff, having been involved in offering odd snippets of information or opinion. Do send me hard copies, or figure out some kind of website access to the text, Shoudnt be too difficult, you must have it stored somwewhere and some internet route for people to look at it shouldnt to be too complex to set up.

Would you consider publishing them here? Identified as what they are and nothing more, I think they would attract some readers and honest reaction. there's nothing like the feeling of seeing your hard work printed out for others to see.

Perhaps Max would consider using them to start a section of the site -- papers and research reports on folk and blues issues.

Check with your tutor as to the publishability of them. (Original contribution) Then ask for recommendations of the journals that publish in the field. If they are more popular in nature submit to FolkRoots or other magazines that publish on the topic. If more general yet, go to your library & look for the British equivalent of Literary Market Place. Try to look at a few issues of publications you're considering to make sure you like to company.

Some people actually get a start in those monthlies in the airplane seat pockets.

Such undergraduate pieces as I still possess are safely hidden away and will probably remain so! That doesn't mean that some of your essays may not be suitable for publication, of course; though you'll need to be confident in them yourself before trying to place them. You mention editing, and of course it's always a good plan to revisit things like that later on, when it's easier to be objective about them.

You can self-publish via the web, for example; or somebody else can do it for you. (I wouldn't put it here; people will simply turn it into a discussion which will rapidly move far from the point!) You might speak to Rod Stradling at Musical Traditions about that. Or me, come to that; I'm publishing a certain amount of specialised material at the South Riding Folk Network's Miscellany, and aiming to add more as time allows. Rod first, though; his site is better-known, and has a wide range of material written at various levels of speciality.

For print, English Dance and Song might well be interested in condensed forms; though their target audience is not an academic one. The Folk Music Journal would be an eventual target, but that would be for your postgraduate work.

Try www.forwardpress.co.uk You may then get ideas for a cheap publication of your own to sell to those interested. Be Blessed.

Start a blog.

Go to google and search for "blog" for all you need to know about blogging.

Thanks very much...

I will send to you individually by PM for now if requested, I think I am shying away from the general viewing idea, but maybe after a bit of feedback I might think again.

Thanks for all the advice.

Love Fay xx
