This forum is getting so danged slow to load (even though I have Hi-speed) that it's like watching molasses freeze.

I've noticed a generalized slowdown in trying to load many sites lately. I went into my system and did the Ad-Aware and Spybot scans and it didn't help much. I expect we'll soon learn of some new virus or generalized disruption of service attack somewhere.

Was very slow tonight (just a few minutes ago). Now it seems to be faster.

when I experience a slowdown, I try several other sites that I use as references, having years of 'feel' for their responsiveness. These days it is 'usually' the case that Mudcat is slower. Barring a note from Jeff or Max about it, I would guess that it is internal, and related to memory and cache situations that require the occasional re-boot and tweak. No doubt this could be avoided if Max hit the lottery....*grin*

Remember the problem with the Mars Rovers shortly after they landed? Turned out they stopped working basically because they needed memory cleared for new commands...

I wish I knew for sure....

You can speed up Mudcat, and stop it having to load so often, if you right click on the mouse (on the thread you want to open) and use the "Open in new window" option.

This means that when you have finished reading the thread you simply close that particular window and go on to the next.

Speeds things up considerably.

I've got into the habit now of opening mudcat in 3 or more windows right from the beginning - I use the third one for tracing threads or looking at messages since last visit, and sometimes open a fourth one for chat. The first two I alternate between, so while a thread is opening in the first window, I click on the next one I want to look at in the second window, then while it is opening, I go back to the first one, and so on. It saves a lot of time when mudcat is slow.
