Subject: BS: Bush: Any Election Faireness Measures?
From: Bo Vandenberg

Leaving aside any other issues.

Given the stain on the last election with Florida votes, confusion and controversy, is the President and the incumbant government making clear gestures of correcting problems?

Any bipartizan measures to ensure a more fair, less questionable election? Putting aside issues of whether there should have been a recount etc.. on the past election I think it falls to the Republicans, as the party in power, to embrace a special transparency and leave no question about this election.

I'm watching for responsible initiatives from a Government. It must not want to taint a new election with problems from the past.

Anyone know of initiatives of this sort?

you could call in international observers like the International Commission of Jurists to observe election processes to ensure that they're fair...

Trouble is, Bush can't admit there WAS a problem with the 2000 elections. If he admits there was a problem, it calls into question the legitimacy of his presidency.

Of course there are already lots of people who question the legitimacy of his presidency, but Bush is unable to acknowlege them.

Well, let them call it into question!! It is a bit late to take it back. Besides, they spent perfectly good money on those judges!

I'm not sharpenning sticks for Bush here. This is not about the last election but about leadership into the next one. Too much shit is done to the political system and not enough people in power try to rebuild it. Midnight Votes, unrecorded votes on sensitive issues, barriers to entry -- these are all criminal (IMHO).
At election time there must be some moral fiber that we can coax out of these people to set forth fairness measures. It seems like the only time they care about Americans.

I reasonable and insightful point.

I believe to expect such behavior from the incumbents is unrealistic. They are corrupt.

Sigurd, you are obviously under the mistaken impression that the United States is a democracy. In a democracy, all of your points woud be valid. But the US is a hegemonic kleptocracy in which the most powerful make up the rules as they go along, and they do it in secret. With scandals like the one surrounding Diebold, I think it's fair to say that the election process is becoming more secretive and less fair, rather than the other way around.

I'm late coming to the realization that what we are experiencing in the US these days forces the same emotions and tactics that countries that reach the pitch of revolution. When conditions are intolerable and legally sanctioned recource is no longer available, what else is there?
