I'm needing some assistance in finding music (particularly songs) that speak of, or suggest, "Balance" - either literally OR lateraly!

I know there is "Delicate Balance" and "Juggling" in the DT (neither of which I'm familiar with) and also Cash's "Belshazar", plus there are things like Jonie Mitchell's "Both Sides Now", but I'd appreciate some help with more examples and ideas.

Thanking you all in anticipation!

Cheers! R-J

Try This One.

I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine
There's got to be a little rain.

Lynne Anderson used to sing this when she appeared on the Lawrence Welk Show.

What occasion do you need them for? That might help people come up with suggestions...

There is Turn, Turn, Turn — likely in DT, and one of my current favorites, The Bug, by Dire Straits (don't know if Mark Knopfler wrote it).

The Bug

Well it's a strange old game — you learn it slow
One step forward and it's back to go
You're standing on the throttle, you're standing on the brake
In the groove till you make a mistake

        Sometimes you're the windshield
        Sometimes you're the bug
Sometimes it all comes together baby
Sometimes you're a fool in love
Sometimes you're the Louisville Slugger, baby
        Sometimes you're the ball
Sometimes it all comes together baby
Sometimes you're gonna lose it all

You gotta know happy — you gotta know glad
Because you're gonna know lonely and you're gonna know bad
When you're rippin' and a ridin' and you're coming on strong
You start slippin' and slidin' and it all goes wrong because

        CHORUS;

One day you got the glory and then you got none
One day you're a diamond and then you're a stone
Everything can change in the blink of an eye
So let the good times roll before we say goodbye, because

        CHORUS X2

cheers,

david

It just occurred to me that Joni Mitchell's Circle Game could be interpreted as being about "balance," too.

Tom Dundee's song is great, I'd go with that. But Prine's Spanish Pipedream (Blow up your TV!) is good, as well as Steve Goodman's Don't Go Looking for Trouble! But the best by for would be - if you can find them - any old Bob Carpenter lp - there was a man looking for balance, and a great song writer too.

Patty Zeitlin's song about the Miller (Waterwheel)
Chorus:
Waterwheel, turn and turn
Endless streams of life to learn
What do you have to teach us as you go?
Waterwheel, tell me true,
is it just to be like you
Moving ever onward with the flow.

Guy Clark:
Little Bit of Both

Richard Thompson: The Great Valerio (maybe)

Let me think. Seems like I know more.
Blessings,
Barbara

if you mean sort of a life balance, I can think of none better than the Miller of the Dee. Great bouncy tune..the king asks the miller why he is so happy and he says "I love my work says he. I love my wife I love my friends I love my children three. I owe no man I can not pay I thank the River Dee that turns the mill that grinds the flour that feeds my babes and me."

oh yes..and how about "long life and success to the farmer" with the" Jill King" tune.   I have woods I have bowers, I have fields I have flowers and the sun is my only alarmer...so good people now here is God speed the plow, and long life and success to the farmer.

Or, following mary's theme, there's Song For Gale by Larry Kaplan
Get me my fiddle, we'll sing all the old songs
You take the high notes and I'll sing the low
Good times and hard times, they're all worth the telling
Don't matter to me if you sing 'em that well.

Blessings,
Barbara

How about Julia Ecklar's 'Crane Dance'? She's a filk artist, and I think the song is based on the movie 'Karate Kid', But it stands on its own merits. It also speaks of balance, both literal and figurative.

The only "Crane Dance" I know, I think is called "Whooping Crane Dance" by a SF woman named Heidi Barton, and has a chorus about "one step forward and two steps back...". It begins by describing her father taking her to see the birds dance. Is that the one?
Blessings,
Barbara

Naiomi Shemer, the noted Israeli composer who just passed away this week wrote a song called "Al Hadevash V'al Haoketz", which translated means "For The Honey And For The Stinger". There is a singable English translation for this song as well. SOL ZELLER

Somewhere out there is a place that's cool
Where peace and balance are the rule
Working toward the future like some kind of mystic jewel
And waiting for a miracle

Some versions of "The Cruel Sister" - used as a Play-Party song -have the repeating lines: "Bow and balance to me".

How could I miss this?
Simple Gifts
(the Shaker song) with its second part:

When true simplicity is gained
to bow and to bend we will not be ashamed
to turn and to turn will be our delight
Till by turning, turning, we come 'round right.

Blessings,
Barbara

How about the Hokey Pokey? It's a very balancing, bi-partisan song. You put your Left foot in and out and then your Right arm...etc.
Besides, what if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

I think you'd like Taoist Tale by Tucker Zimmerman.
There was a thread about it here in Feb 2002.

There is a really superb piece of music with talk over poetry by "The Moody Blues"..made in 1970....It is on their "A Question of Balance" Album and the track is called "The Balance".
You can find this on the following website.
