Subject: RE: Lost Rescipe - HELP - Kartoffle From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 29 Jun 04 - 10:00 PM ANOTHER EXAMPLE - of the sort of erratic "above the BS and below the BS" promulgated by an errant RUM-POT....with "friends on the inside."

Subject: RE: Lost Rescipe - HELP - Kartoffle From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Jun 04 - 12:16 AM Are you calling me a "Rum-Pot," Gargoyle? What's a rum-pot? So, you want a Kartoffel recipe? Peel 'em, and boil the hell outa them. If you use Yukon Gold or other yellow Kartoffeln, they'll taste good that way. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lost Rescipe - HELP - Kartoffle From: Stilly River Sage Date: 30 Jun 04 - 02:28 AM This recipe is from a friend's cookbook--The Ellis Island Immigrant Cookbook by Tom Bernardin. The recipe is Yugoslavian, from a woamn in Oceanside, California:
6 large potatoes, peeled 1 large onion, chopped 1 large pasnip, chopped 3 bay leaves 6 peppercorns 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 cup tomato juice all-purpose flour, small amount 2 tbsp. sour cream dash vinegar, if desired Cover the first group of ingredients above with water and cook until potatoes are done. Drain off the water. Thicken a bit with small amount of flour and water and then add 2 tbst. sour cream and serve. This is a good side dish especially good with sausage. You can add a dash of vinegar if desired. Serves 4. I can figure out that kartoffel = potato. Beyond that, I don't know if this "potato dish" is remotely akin to what you're looking for. SRS |
Subject: RE: Lost Rescipe - HELP - Kartoffle From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Jun 04 - 03:02 AM Oh, here (click) is the Rumtopf/Wassail thread that Gargoyle questions. Yeah, Garg, it's arbitrary - but I've seen lots more Wassail songs than I've seen about Kartoffeln and Fred Eggs. And besides that, I missed the Rumtopf thread. Now that you've called my attention to it, I'll leave it up top, just to be ornery. Generally, though, I move recipe threads below unless they also cover music. Yes, Amos, the Gargoyle posts were from our own beloved Gargoyle. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lost Rescipe - HELP - Kartoffle From: Stilly River Sage Date: 30 Jun 04 - 10:38 AM I see--not a request for a recipe at all, just grousing. (Does that make this thread a recipe for grouse?) |

Subject: RE: Lost Rescipe - HELP - Kartoffle From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Jun 04 - 12:36 PM You know, Gargoyle, I'm still not inclined to move this thread to the music side, but it does make me think of potato songs. The first one that comes to mind is Bulbes, a Yiddish classic. I suppose I should have mentioned The Famine Song (The Praties They Grow Small) first, but that's too obvious. Then there's The Garden Where the Praties Grow and Sweet Potatoes. Any others? -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Lost Rescipe - HELP - Kartoffle From: Bob Bolton Date: 30 Jun 04 - 07:11 PM G'day Joe, Just to inject a bit of music / song: One of the tunes collected by Mark Schuster and Maria Zann from "German-Australians" (descendants of 1880s refugees from Bismarck's conquest of the independent states and duchies that became his "United Germany") came with the name Per Kartoffelen Lebenwurst. The tune turns out to be a bouncy, polkaed, version of Upidee, which my wife Patricia remembers being sung by her Grandfather and his church choir cronies as a playful setting of Longfellow's (?) Excelsior. Unfortunately, the words we have are simply: Per kartoffelen lebenwurst, Yipp-i-di, yipp-i-dah, Per kartoffelen lebenwurst, Yipp-i-di-i-dah! so I suspect it's another example of a snatch of words used by dance musicians to identify an unnamed tune and/or act as a mnemonic for the rhythm of the opening bars. (This sort of thing gives us - at least here in Australia - such dance tune names as The Black Cat Piddled in the White Cat's Eye!) Regard(les)s, Bob |
Subject: RE: Lost Rescipe - HELP - Kartoffle From: mack/misophist Date: 01 Jul 04 - 12:16 AM The term was 'pomes frits', I believe. Save yourself a lot of trouble. Go to the frozen foods section and get some french fries. A well known German dish. |
