Subject: BS: film - Super-Size Me - Morgan Spurlock
From: rich-joy

Having only just seen this famous film on the bodily effects of going on a "Maccas" fast-food bender, I thought I'd see what fellow 'Catters had to say about it.
However, I was most surprised to not find any mention in past threads - am I searching incorrectly, then???

So what DO other Mudcatters think about the film???

One of the most extraordinary revelations for me, was the absolute GARBAGE shown to be fed to the kids in many schools in the US!
I'm told it's not much better in the UK or OZ!!! and that apparently, MacDonalds have bought their way into the Victorian School system and the Sydney children's hospital???!!

Another eye-opener was the equivalent HUGE bowl of sugar, consumed with Spurlock's 30-day diet AND the amounts of sugar shown to be in MacDonald's new SALAD meals ...

But wait, there's more!

Cheers! R-J

Clinton,

yes, it's bad, and "everybody knows."

But I think the surprise of the movie (for me) is just how incredibly bad it is. The deterioration of Spurlock's body in just a couple of weeks is astounding! Of course, he ate nothing else.

Regards,

doug

the "rules" he followed were a bit extreme also - based on the interview I saw with him. HAD to have each item on the menu every x amount of time, etc, etc. No latitude left to at least TRY and eat healthier.

I have not seen it yet, but having looked hard at the nutritional info on Mac's menu items a couple of years ago, one would be hard pressed to eat a healthy meal there. Unfortunately, God has played a mean trick on us. As I often say....nothing tastes better than fat....except fat with salt on it.

In the beginning, the Creator God did cover the earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach combined with an abundance of green, yellow and red vegetables. He did this so that Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.

Then, using God's bountiful gifts, Satan created Dairy Queen and Krispy Kreme and Tim Horton's. And Satan said: "You want hot fudge with that?" And Man said: "Yes!" And Woman said: "I'll have one, too...with sprinkles." And lo and behold they did put on 10 unhealthy pounds.

And then God created the healthful yogurt that Woman might keep the figure that Man found so fair. And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat, and sugar from the cane, and combined them. And Woman went from size 2 to size 14.

So God said: "Try my fresh green garden salad." And Satan presented crumbled Bleu Cheese dressing and garlic toast on the side. And Man and Woman unfastened their belts following the repast.

God then said: "I have sent you heart-healthy vegetables and olive oil in which to cook them." And Satan brought forth deep-fried coconut shrimp, butter-dipped lobster chunks, and chicken-fried steak so big it needed its own platter. And Man's cholesterol went through the roof.

Then God brought forth the potato, naturally low in fat and brimming with potassium and good nutrition. Then Satan peeled off the healthful skin, sliced the starchy center into chips and deep-fried them in animal fats adding copious quantities of salt. And Man packed on more pounds.

God then brought forth running shoes so that his children might lose those extra pounds. And Satan introduced cable TV with remote so Man would not have to toil getting to his feet to change the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried before the flickering light and started wearing stretchy lycra jogging suits.

God then gave lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his appetite. And Satan created McDonald's and the 99-cent double cheeseburger. Then Satan asked: "You want fries with that?" And Man replied: "Yes! And super size 'em!" And Satan said: "It is good."

And Man and Woman went into cardiac arrest.

And yea, verily God did sigh unto His very depths... and created quadruple by-pass surgery.

Whereupon Satan chuckled and created The Health Care System.

That's it, then?!

Have NONE of my fellow Aussies any comment to make??? - Australia is, after all, exceedingly close behind the USA in the obesity stakes ...

Spurlock gained almost 2 stone in his month-long carbo-bender, but it took many, many months of eating healthily and exercising to regain his former health and size.
(DAMMIT!!!)
- and dwditty's statement above, has more than an uncomfortable element of truth contained therein : " ... As I often say....nothing tastes better than fat....except fat with salt on it!"

(re MacDonalds, there are some interesting statistics in the latest Weekend Aust'n Magazine about Australian state populations compared to the number of Maccas outlets - NSW leads the way, closely followed by Qld, then Vic ...)

About five years ago my then 5-yr-old daughter had been after me to take her to McDonalds because all the kids at school were always talking about it.

The nearest McDonalds is either Blaxland or Lithgow, about a half-hour drive to either, so the threat is not as immediate as it is for most.

One day after we had been in Sydney for some reason or other I took her into McDonalds at Blacktown and bought her a Big Mac.

She forced herself to take two or three bites and then handed it over to me.
"You can finish that Dad," she said.
She had tried really hard to like it, but couldn't.
She hasn't asked to go back.

John

R-J,

I think Atkins has brainwashed the world. It was not a carbo-bender that did it to Spurlock. It's the FAT, people.

I reckon, Nerd, that the massive volume of Coke-type drinks (are they called "sodas" in the US???) that were drunk, had something to do with it as well - i.e. "sugar" ...
AND the eating of de-natured, over-processed "food"stuffs (which, BTW, Atkins was against too)

Cheers! R-J

Timely refresh. We just saw the movie last night (on DVD). It's a good movie.

Interestingly, McDonalds doesn't serve anything I can eat. Not one single thing, unless I were to have a salad with no dressing. I don't eat meat, I can't eat dairy, and I'm allergic to corn. The french fries have beef extract in them, and the salad dressings and everything else containing any sweetener have corn syrup in them. (This is in the US. The sweetners in other countries may not be from corn syrup.)
