Subject: H'py Battle of Aughrim day - Ire & World From: InOBU Date: 22 Jul 04 - 12:48 PM Yes today is the day, when in 1691, an Anglo Dutch army defeted the French at Aughrim in India, thereby insuring the success of the band the Chieftans, and the eventual demise of Texas Line dancing, sometime in the 22nd century. This day is often celibrated by fireworks, placed in the hats of Italians (one of the only groups not represented at the battle, it being the spagetti harvest...) though I DO NOT suggest this be done in this more inlightened age, Cheers Larry |

Subject: RE: H'py Battle of Aughrim day - Ire & World From: InOBU Date: 23 Jul 04 - 04:48 AM That should read a Jig made famose by the Chieftans... thereby making July 22 a sort of July 4th for Ireland and the world... Larry |
Subject: RE: H'py Battle of Aughrim day - Ire & World From: IanC Date: 23 Jul 04 - 09:00 AM Larry I thought you were extracting the urine, but if you're serious about Aughrim then you should know that it was fought on 12th July 1691 (not 22nd) at Aughrim (near Athlone) in Ireland. It was the last battle in the campaign between William III and James II (though The Boyne, 1690, has subsequently been regarded as the decisive battle) and involved English, Danish, French, Scots, Dutch, German and Irish troops on the Williamite side vs French, Irish and other troops for James. The tune is widespread in Ireland and seems to be known as "The Glorious Battle of Aughrim" or "The Terrible Battle of Aughrim" depending on which side you think you might have supported. King William III later travelled to Rome for an audience with The Pope, much to the dismay of many Protestant Irish people belonging to the Orange Order, when they find this out. One was known to remark "He wasn't the man I thought he was" of the man in whose honour the order was originally founded. :-) Ian |
Subject: RE: H'py Battle of Aughrim day - Ire & World From: IanC Date: 23 Jul 04 - 09:07 AM Larry Sorry ... date's right of course. 12th was The Boyne (am I awake these days?) :-( |
Subject: RE: H'py Battle of Aughrim day - Ire & World From: Big Tim Date: 23 Jul 04 - 09:46 AM Aughrim was 12 July 1691, old calendar: add on 10 days for equivalent modern date = 22 July. Boyne fought on 1 July 1690, old calendar: equivalent modern date = 11 July. ("the 12th" is a miscalculation, should be the "11th", due to Rome, and Catholic southern Europe, adopting new calendar in 1582 and suspicious Protestant Britain not adopting the new calendar until 1752). (I still don't know what point Larry is making!). |

If not everyone gets your jokes they don't have to whinge abt it. The one abt ensuring the success of the chieftains was enough for me on its own. Thanks for the smile mate. |
Subject: RE: H'py Battle of Aughrim day - Ire & World From: gigix Date: 09 Nov 04 - 08:29 AM About Italians, I can assure you that they took part to the battle of Aughrim, as they did in many important battles the wide world over(including the Little Big Horn massacre). And they were soldiers under virtually every one of the flags you mentioned, at least the ones who did not own the smallest piece of land to enjoy the spaghetti harvest. Simply they did not know that they were Italians, since Italy did not exist in those times, and the Italy peninsula was divided in many regions whose languages and habits were so different among themselves that an "Italian" could not understand another "Italian" who lived, say, 200 km from him. About spaghetti harvest, to be honest, the dates do not match: the spaghetti harvest does not come in July, but in October, to allow the fruits to dry up and gain that hard consistency that allows them to be cooked succesfully and be mixed with tomato or chocolate sauce. Anyway I don't disagree about the suggestion of putting fireworks in Italians' hats. Their majority elected Mr. Berlusconi some years ago, and their mind may need some strong enlightening. Luigi |
