I think jOhn has aimed a little low with the anachronistic honours system, and that he should be canonised. I suspect he needs a couple of certified miracles to get the full sainthood, but I can chip one in. When I called into the curry ship recently, I came home to my 3am feast to find that jOhn had turned the naan I ordered into a poppadum! Yes, a poppadum! There actually was a question in there about how you get an OBE, and other such awards. They are awarded by the Government to recognise people's efforts in various areas - sports, media, culture, public service, charities etc. They are often well-deserved (an example was the knighthood awarded to Steve Redgrave who got gold medals in rowing in four consecutive Olympic Games, or, in our area of folk music the MBEs awarded to Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson). Members of the public can recommend people for awards.

Unfortunately you also see awards of knighthoods and peerages to some City fat cat, and the general assumption is that they were in exchange for a 'political contribution' - a sum of money to the political party controlling the Government. The Opposition is let in on the act, so there's no complaints from there.

They can be awarded to non-UK citizens, usually to those with a strong UK connection. PG Wodehouse (USA), Bob Geldof and Spike Milligan (Eire) have all received honorary knighthoods, although this doesn't allow them to be termed Sir Bob or Sir Spike.

Here's an interesting little bit about Spike Milligan:

One year at the British Comedy Awards, host Jonathan Ross was going along on autopilot spouting cliches as he presented Milligan with a lifetime achievement gong and read out a gushing letter from Prince Charles. Milligan, annoyed at the situation, brought the house down by saying on live TV: "Grovelling little bastard!". He later sent Charles an apology, as the two were old friends. He also cheerfully asked if he'd blown his chances of a knighthood.

Spike was eventually knighted in the 2000/2001 New Year Honours list, and although technically his foreign citizenship forbade him from using the title, everyone called him Sir Spike Milligan regardless. At the ceremony, Prince Charles tried to convince him to take the oath of loyalty and become a British subject again, pointing out even he had to do it as Prince of Wales. Spike quipped that it was different for Charles because he had to pledge allegiance to his mum as she provides him bed and board. He also informed the Prince that there were no dry cleaners in Peru.

Indeed Guest, you are totaly mistaken. In fact the common perception is, these honors are as described by the public, and so it is with great delight I correct your silly nitpick criticism.

So that we don't forget the order of things again, ah heh ah hem, the title is 'O.B.E.' not OBE, which is some African thing.

Mr Milligan and the other one both can use the title since some Irish people are British, while nothing in the laws of the Republic requires her citizens not be Lords, for example Lord Longford etc., etc., etc.,
neither, it appears, is it illegal to so do.
