Subject: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST Date: 01 Aug 04 - 12:38 AM An offhanded remark by a stranger inspired this thread! Recently at an orchestral concert, I was distracted by two guest whispering between themselves. I overheard one ask "Why are there so few Joe Offer Music threads?" I could not get that question out of my mind. I had to agree with the strangers; there are far too few Joe Offer Music threads! I decided to do something about it. I wondered & I pondered & I sweated & I fretted until I knew what to do. I ran posthaste & presented my idea before the LET'S DO ONE FOR JOE COMMITTEE of FINE MUSIC, INTERNATIONAL & all two of us overwhelmingly voted to implement my plan. Hence, this is the Joe Offer Music Thread which, purely by happenstance, has been posted on this day, August 1, the onset of the Joe Offer Birthmonth! Now, to part one of the musical involvement; I seek the lyrics of an obscure song entitled "Happy Birthday to Joe ". The only lyrics I have are : "Happy Birthday to Joe Happy Birthday to Joe Happy Birthday Joe Offer Happy Birthday to Joe" I would greatly appreciate any additional lyrics! I have diligently searched the net & found nothing! Part two of the musical involvement: Part of the original plan of the LDOFJ COMMITTEE of FINE MUSIC, INTERNATIONAL was to create a song to honor Joe Offer. We sought a songwriter, a musician & a singer & found two people brave enough to undertake such a task! They are Noble Onie, songwriter & guitarist, and Cary Okie, an Irish tenor with a powerful baritone voice! The LDOFJ COMMITTEE of FINE MUSIC, INTERNATIONAL is excited about the resulting product! We rushed to the Electric TweedyLand Studio & recorded it. Noble Onie's guitar work is somewhat adequate; however, The Irish tenor Cary Okie will send chills down your spine with his amazing baritone! Truly, it is an awe inspiring performance! Of course, such an undertaking is costly & we could not have done it with out our sponsors. Funding for this product was provided in part by The National Endowment for Women Who Spit, and by a grant from The Random Axe of God. Web Space for the MP3 is enthusiastically, graciously & temporarily provided by the beloved TWEED, one of the Mudcat Cafe's foremost and well-respected members, & the MAYOR OF TWEEDSBURG. Our thanks to all who gave so wonderfully! May we be forever in your debt! Without further ado, Click to hear the JOE OFFER BIRTHMONTH WALTZ ; performed & recorded in honor of the man who wishes he could do better but always does good enough; the greatly esteemed and highly lauded JOE OFFER! HAPPY BIRTHMONTH JOE OFFER!!! H L Wigley; President of the LET'S DO ONE FOR JOE COMMITTEE of FINE MUSIC, INTERNATIONAL |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Aug 04 - 12:48 AM Oh, gee....I'm honored, I guess. But I guess I have a moral obligation to move this to the non-music side of the forum. Is that a dog I hear howling in the background on the recording - or is it my neighbor's dog howling because I'm playing the recording? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Blackcatter Date: 01 Aug 04 - 12:53 AM I'm not sure that I have to be sober to understand it, but I'll try back when I am. There's got to be some irony in this thread being started by GUEST. Happy B-Day Joe. Off to drink again - see you all tomorrow. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 01 Aug 04 - 12:54 AM Well, this thread seems not to be by our good friend Marty! |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,Charles Ulysses Farley Date: 01 Aug 04 - 01:05 AM Hi! My name is Charles Ulysses Farley, or Chuck U. Farley fer short. That wuz one a purty nice birfday waltz there Mr. GUEST! It'd be even better if thet boy sangin' it didn' have sucha bad case of th' mushmouf. But whatta ya exspeck frum a lowdown place like thet Tweedburg joint. It warn't too bad considerin' th' source. Chuck U. Farley |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: darkriver Date: 01 Aug 04 - 03:30 AM Nice work, khandu! |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Bill D Date: 01 Aug 04 - 01:13 PM oh my...moral obligations DO get sticky, don't they? That was a purely MUSICAL "offering" to my way of thinking..('tweren't yer neighbors, Joe..I heered it too...I think it was an expression of Universal Sadness about advancing age) |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Mr Red Date: 01 Aug 04 - 01:55 PM Oh dear, the Joe Offer gravitas dept has slipped a little. Joe, you will be down to our level soon but I like the irony ........ but maybe a long pair of tongs are more fitting ( and a pooper scooper) |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: CarolC Date: 01 Aug 04 - 07:40 PM That was some nice music, here in this BS thread. This thread wasn't started by GUEST. It was started by Harry Lee Wigley. Didn't anyone see the signature at the bottom of the opening post? |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: khandu Date: 01 Aug 04 - 07:51 PM This is wonderful!! The "LDOFJ C of FM, I" seems to be ia fine institution! The "Joe Offer Waltz" brought tears to my eyes; it was obviously heart-felt! I was impressed with Cary Okie's singing as well as Noble Onie's guitar & that's no baloney! But there was no mention of the fellow who played the ululator! Who was he? He was great! I am a bit bemused by fellow-member darkriver. He/she seems to imply that I, khandu, am the "guest" that created this thread. I am not!! True, I created the "No Joe Offer Birthmonth Thread", but, it is clear that I was somewhat distraught at the perceived lack of interest demonstrated regarding the Joe Offer Birthmonth. Indeed, this thread is quite exciting & uplifting! I could not be the author of both, lest I be manic! (which I am not!)(Also, I am sure that Joe Offer's "magic eye" can see that I didn't post it!) I am also somewhat bewildered at Joe Offer's sense of "moral obligation" to put this in the BS section! This is most certainly a Music thread!! It has a song, lyrics request & even a Committee of Fine Music! Yes! This is a musical thread!! However it is Joe's Birthmonth & his "Waltz" & his "Music Thread" & he has been entrusted with discretionary powers so the decision to BS this fine Music thread is his, and I support him! Howbeit, I enjoyed the song & agree with all when I say "HAPPY BIRTHMONTH, JOE!!" k |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: khandu Date: 01 Aug 04 - 07:57 PM HAW!! Carol C know something she ain't tellin! The "Guest" signed as "H L Wigley" yet she called him "Harry Lee Wigley" !! Hmmmm! Could she be the real creator of this thread? |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Nigel Parsons Date: 01 Aug 04 - 08:08 PM I'm not sure I can see the reason for this thread. If it is just to recognise all that Joe has to 'Offer' then let me add my appreciation of the hard work he clearly puts in CHEERS Joe Nigel |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,I.R.Tweed Date: 01 Aug 04 - 08:43 PM In a post up above, one fellow called FuckYou Charlie or something like thet sed .... But whatta ya exspeck frum a lowdown place like thet Tweedburg joint. It warn't too bad considerin' th' source. I am flumoxxed by this attack on my exceptionally fine establishment and habv recorded an' distrubited many famous artistes in my elaborit studios, all obv whom have gone on to higher degrees obv obscurities. I tharfore ask, nay I demand an apoplexy from this FuckYou person or whoever he really iz. Also, HAPPY UN~BIRFDAY TO YOU, JOE OFFERI would think this would be a musical thread also, but az it is yore unbirthday thread you may do wif it what you will. If you only knew the lengths thet Khnadnuddz and I went through to get yore song on the air you would probably put it in some entirely new category altogether named HorseShit or summat like that. Yore derefriend an' admirer, Tweed |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: khandu Date: 01 Aug 04 - 08:54 PM I am shocked & dismayed that once again my honorable name has been brought up in regard to this thread! True, it is a wonderful thread from a wonderful institution with wonderful music for a wonderful guy, but, let the musicians who did the Joe Offer Waltz enjoy their laurels without someone trying to discredit them by crediting someone else! Kk |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Jeri Date: 01 Aug 04 - 09:57 PM Well, I CAN'T GET THE DAMNED THING TO WORK!!! S'CUse me. I keep getting "failure to initialize" messages. I don't need no stinkin' initials, just wanna play the durned thing. An' now, I'se startin' to talk in Tweed'sisms. Ahem. I'm not entirely sure Joe Offer is the best person to determine the BS-ness of this thread. It's a conflict of interest. One shouldn't mess with threads about one's own self. I'm also thinkin' there's more of us clones than there are Joes. Is it time for a mutiny? How much trouble WILL I get in? Perhaps I'd be better off just bitching about it. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,Jon Date: 01 Aug 04 - 11:25 PM Well the Joe Offer Waltz sounded good but it sounded like blues, rather that a waltz to me but there again at 4:15 am and after say 1/2 litre of rum and 2 or 3 cans of bitter, I'd not trust my judgement too far. Anyway, I'm in a good mood and have a newish toy so I thought I'd play Mr Offer a bit of a waltz that I enjoy. I have put it here. Hope he likes it. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Bill D Date: 01 Aug 04 - 11:39 PM what are you using to listen with, Jeri?...I am currently using a little toy called XMplay....I am liking it a lot, even though it competes with 3-4 others ... (that was nice, Jon! Was that a regular accordian?) |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,Jon Date: 01 Aug 04 - 11:47 PM No Bill. That was a low end Yamaha (PSR290) keyboard. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: bengi Date: 02 Aug 04 - 12:12 AM Mudcatters all over this earth Celebrate Joe Offer's birth Cause while we idlely lurk Joe makes Mudcat work |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Aug 04 - 01:22 AM Nice tune, Jon. What's the filename fp.mp3 mean? It really is a nice-sounding recording. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,Jon Date: 02 Aug 04 - 08:52 AM I called it fp as the tune was Fanny Power. As for the sound, I find the keyboard is variable in terms of quality of "instruments". I think "musette", the voice I used for that is particularly good. That's only a "2 fingered" job BTW that's all I can do. I just play a single note melody and a bass note(s) to indicate the chord required and the keyboard does the rest for me. In that case, I was using a preset style called JzWaltz1. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Rapparee Date: 02 Aug 04 - 09:07 AM One can only, as a trumpeter, offer Offer this birthday MP3 offering. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Peter T. Date: 02 Aug 04 - 11:52 AM Joe Offer is music to my ears. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Aug 04 - 01:22 PM Rapaire, if my math is correct, this birthday is only number 56. Does that warrant "Taps"? It could be my math is off. Most of the time, I don't remember how old I am, and I have to work it out with a pencil and paper. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Jeri Date: 02 Aug 04 - 02:46 PM My heartfelt contribution is here. Please excuse the amateur nature of this. My recording engineer sucks. It also would have been about a billion megabuggers. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Rapparee Date: 02 Aug 04 - 02:49 PM Well, Joe, I'm older than you are and I've had to figure out how old I am since I was about 50 years younger than I am now. So, if "Taps" doesn't do it, how about this? (Of course, you could always show how young you are with a tattoo or a body piercing or something. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Jeri Date: 02 Aug 04 - 09:22 PM OK, my 'streaming media' is more like 'steaming media'. It's a wma instead of an MP3. Doesn't work with Mozilla or a friend's Mac, but works with MSIE. I also haven't heard anybody saying 'Jeez, Jeri, that really DOES suck!' so I don't know if anybody's heard it. I'll try to replace this with a 'better' version (like a real MP3) tomorrow. This thread can't possibly be dead already. Just because Rap played Taps doesn't mean it's over. People, "Don't fear the Rapaire!" (Sorry - that was rather grim.) |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 02 Aug 04 - 09:36 PM I can't get into the .mil sites from Australia... I am most upset! We are suposed to be Allies in a War Against Terror, not a War Against Folk music! And now the 'Free' Trade Agreement too! Hmmmph! |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: khandu Date: 02 Aug 04 - 09:37 PM Okay Joe Offer! This has definitely turned in to a music thread what with all the contributions! What say it gets promoted! Kk
-Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,Jon Date: 02 Aug 04 - 09:41 PM OK Jeri, I felt I didn't really be wanting to coming in here and saying "yes rapaire that is good", "yes Jeri that is good" (or alternatively being someone who would just say "good" to be polite) as I felt a danger of playing a "judge" I don't want to be and saying "yes, I heard it" feels a little negative. And I'm also aware I've contributed... In honesty mode, I will say I've listened to Tweed's original, Rapaire's trumpet piece and your "band" (who were the others with the harmony?) and have enjoyed them all. I also think that this has been the most imaginative birthday thread I've ever seen here. I can't think of another where musical contributions have been offered - maybe there are? Jon (Eating a Blue Oyster) |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Jeri Date: 02 Aug 04 - 10:46 PM Jon, I just wondered if it worked! Let's face it...it's a silly song, and fun was the point. The band was me. I think this thread was a great idea too, and I've really enjoyed it so far. Foolestroupe, I am somewhat worried that our government now seems concerned about allowing people from other countries hearing our bugle calls. Classified documents and the standard chow hall recipe for "Shit on a Shingle," sure, but bugle calls? |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: bbc Date: 02 Aug 04 - 11:10 PM Jeri, I loved it! Joe, I'll talk to you later, if you know what I mean. ;) bbc |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,the blueslady Date: 03 Aug 04 - 01:50 AM Now don't y'all go bashing our esteemed Mayor and resident expert on all songs badly recorded. I have personally seen the likes of several of you sneaking around Tweedsberg when your forum is broke. We Tweedizens know good music (badly recorded) when we hear it. That is a fine birthday song of great historic significance...... Rapaire and Jeri's offerings are brilliant as well. the blueslady (Tweed Towers Official Moderator/Ministress of DuctTapage) |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Aug 04 - 02:28 AM Wait! Wait! Wait! I'm totally confused. Jeri was the band on WHICH recording - Taps???? Aging Mudcatters want to know. -Joe Offer- (that's why I stay out of non-music threads - my children say I'm a bit slow, and I confuse easily...) |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,MMario Date: 03 Aug 04 - 10:20 AM Joe - weren't you drafted as a presidential candidate a few years ago in a NON-election year? Doesn't that show that you are more worthy than any of the current candidates - They only manage to get drafted during ELECTION years... |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,MMario Date: 03 Aug 04 - 10:45 AM obligatory musical content: The Joe Offer Campaign Song |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Rapparee Date: 03 Aug 04 - 11:05 AM "Offer expires next November"?? Geez, I hope not. And he probably does as well. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST Date: 03 Aug 04 - 11:08 AM obviously a false prediction - as that was posted in October '99 - and 5 novembers have been and gone since |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Jeri Date: 03 Aug 04 - 02:21 PM Joe, I was on the one I posted the link to. The tune's a bit different, and you might be able to make out some words. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,Frug Date: 03 Aug 04 - 02:37 PM Well if it's a Birthday how about a party song Hey Joe.........where you going with that bun in your hand? |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,Charles Ulysses Farley Date: 03 Aug 04 - 02:53 PM My Dear Mr. Tweed, I am greatly offended that you chose in your post above to refer to me, Chuck U. Farley, as "Fuck You Charlie"! I have been hearing that sort of thing all my life and it is no longer funny! Can I help it that my parents gave me a name that people can easily make a cheap joke of? Yes, sometimes parents can be cruel and give kids names like "Justin Case", "Dick Head" or "Rick Shaw", but reasonable adults should be beyond making childish jokes about such things. Thank you, Chuck U. Farley |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST Date: 03 Aug 04 - 03:07 PM gee chuckie - did you ever consider - 1)using a different nickname 2)not telling anyone your middle initial - or even possibly your first name. 3) choosing to use a psuedonym on the internet to totaly avoid the problem? hell - you could even go by C. Ulysses when you bring your problems on yourself - why should we pity you. |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: khandu Date: 03 Aug 04 - 10:06 PM Call me a madman if it affirms your existence & pacifies your emotions, but I, King khandu, consider Tweed's lovely website one of the more unusual blues sites I have visited! My entourage & I give it a high thumbs up! With regulars such as the blueslady & Rolfyboy, as well as the Bobert & BWL, it is a "never-a-dull-moment" environment which is also very informative site for blues lovers! Having said that, I shall also say that Tweed's "Badly Recorded Blues" is very enjoyable, as evidenced by his "Joe Offer Waltz"! Kk |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Lin in Kansas Date: 03 Aug 04 - 11:29 PM Tweed, Khandu, Jeri, Rapaire-- The non-musical among us stand in awe at your accomplishments in this thread! Thank you for sharing! And oh yeah, Joe-- HAPPY BIRTHMONTH TO YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lin |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 03 Aug 04 - 11:32 PM You are a madman, khandu, though that in no way affirms my existence and pacifies my emotions. For that, I need mint chocolate chip icecream. But, you're right about Tweedburg. Imperfection should never be compromised! |
Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: GUEST,Jon Date: 04 Aug 04 - 12:27 AM Well Lin's made me feel a little excluded here ;-) so I guess I'll have to try another waltz using the same settings. Can't seem to find this in the dt though I thought I'd given a MIDI for it at some point anyway Watercress Girl The bum notes at the end come free! (I'll make the excuse I'm drunk...) If it isn't here, we do have a version here with a slightly different tune to the one I attemped to play. |

Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: Joe_F Date: 04 Aug 04 - 12:02 PM 56, like other multiples of 28, is a special birthday: Unless you were born before 1900, it is guaranteed to be on the same day of the week as your actual birth day. Here's to your 84th! And may you still be keeping this house in order. |

Subject: RE: The JOE OFFER MUSIC THREAD From: khandu Date: 04 Aug 04 - 09:46 PM Guest Jon, Lin obviously confused you with me since I have offered no musical contribution to this thread! So please do not feel excluded & I will not feel included! k |
