Thank you very much, Braveharp. Now, I hope I can figure out who asked me for that song back in 2004. You didn't have the verse about the "fair maid, fair maid"??
Here are the lyrics, without the tune, for easier reading:

The Fairy Ring

As Katie one night by moon light bright
sat busy spinning her thread.
'Twas Tim came by with a laugh in his eye
and now listen to what he said:
I've had a fling in a fairy ring
where fairies dance and play and sing
Won't you come this night while stars are bright
you'll see, you'll see
for I'm the lad the fairies have had
to tea, to tea

As Katy one night by moon light bright
sat busy spinning her thread.
'Twas Tim came by with a laugh in his eye
and now listen to what he said:
I've had a fling in a fairy ring
where fairies dance and play and sing-
won't you come this night while stars are bright
you'll see, you'll see
for I'm the lad the fairies have had
to tea, to tea.

My mother taught me this song I wrote it down and I've had these lyrics in a notebook since about 1980. She also taught me the melody on the piano and told me that she performed it in a play at school. This would have been in Ashland, Ohio during the depression years.
She said the name of the school play was "The Queer Prince" but I've
not that title.
I uploaded these lyrics to the session dot org few years ago. I have since been learning how to use Harmony ASsistant and only recently learned about MudCat !
Here is the Harmony Assistant version of ABC which will print out both the melody line and lyrics together after you change the extension of the text file to dot abc:

Can't somebody help Joe to maintain his credibility? My guess would be to look in old copies of Girl Scout/Brownie Scout songbooks. Although as George suggests above there is something about the lyrics that hint at a stage show; did Girl Scouts and Brownie Scouts in the US have the equivalent of The Gang Show?

One of my worst memories is of singing Camptown Races as a Wolf Cub at a Scout show in Dublin in 1962 - in blackface.

Can't imagine the Irish Rovers singing about Brownie Scouts. Can't somebody please help? I have an illusion to maintain in our song circle - they believe I'm all-knowing when it comes to songs. This is a very worthwhile illusion to maintain.

Sounds like something the "Irish Rovers" used to do.

Looking over the lyrics, I'd almost say it's like a stage show thing. Sort of music hall or something. I've been trying the various sheet music repositories but haven't found anything in that vein yet.

This is not MY kind of song, but a friend asked if I could find it. Here's her e-mail:

    Joe,
An old friend called a few days ago to ask if I could supply the missing words from the following song. Do you know the song or how I could find it? Apparently a friend of hers heard it as a child and wants to record it for her daughter to sing to her child who is due to be born in mid-August. My friend thought it was an American folksong. A couple of others thought it sounded Irish. Here it is:

As Katie one night by the fireside bright
      sat busy spinning her thread
'twas Tims came by with a laugh in his eye
and listen to what he said,

"I've had a fling on the grassy ring
where fairies flit and twirl and sing.
If you go by night when the stars are bright,
      you'll see, you'll see.
For I'm the lad the faires have had
      to tea, to tea."

When the __________came out the brownie scout
      ______________________________________
Twas Tim(s) who wheeled and turned on his heel
      afraid, afraid.

And the sweet Kathleen was chosen their queen,
      fair maid, fair maid.

    Can anybody help?
    Thanks.
    -Joe Offer-
