On 08/15/1944, three American divisions and British paratroopers with Free French and North African troops landed in Provence.

I think, after D-Day's commemoration, we, French, still have to thank all the lads, dead ones or vets, wherever they come from, who contributed to free our Country and put an end to the Nazi's barbarousness.

Merci à tous,
Laurent

I can't say it in French, but I echo the remarks above.

Exactement. There are many who should be thanked -- let us not forget the work done by the Maquisards, without whom the work would have been much more difficult.

Here is a link to the background to the campaign of the Vercors, one of the most desperate battles fought by the resistance during the liberation of France.

Apparently, the order was given, "Bouclez le Vercors, le Jour-J" (raise, or call our, the Vercors on D-Day). Somewhere, this was taken to mean D-Day for Operation Overlord, the Normandy landings, rather than that for Operation Anvil, the later landings in the South of France. As a result, the liberated area on the plateau of the Vercors was overrun by German troops before help could reach it, and this was accompanied by sickening atrocities by SS troops.
