Slugs is slugs! A lovely children's book if you haven't read it.

I once co-founded a contradance band known as the "Sea Slugs." We kind of thought of ourselves as "soft core" punk traditionalists, and we sometimes fantisized about our need for a couple of leather clad security guards with crowbars up in front of the stage to protect us from the more aggressive groupies. Them was the days!

Slugs have this strange way of combining a feeling of malevolence with an indisputable vulnerability. I get the impression that they slither around under the impression they are really tough and menacing. And then "Squelch!!", and they're totally splattered.
