Subject: BS: Real World Olympics
From: leeneia
Date: 03 Sep 04 - 09:16 AM

The last time I watched the Olympics (I think it was Salt Lake)I got to noticing how the large people of the world tend to dominate. I know there are exceptions, but when did you last see a winner from the Phillipines, say?

There WAS the luge event, but as my husband said, "You could put a frozen turkey on that thing and get the same result."

I have created a concept called the Real World Olympics. So far, I've thought of three events where the athletes will be judged on speed and grace.

1. Go into a huge supermarket and purchase toothpicks without asking for help or punching anybody.

2. Be in a largish room and get a cat to come to you.

3. Change the strings on a big guitar (not one of those dainty classical models.)

Have you any other events to suggest?

Change a tire on the side of a crowded expressway.

Find a bathroom in a strange neighborhood.

Fencing -- barbed wire, in rocky hardpan soil.

Carrying full cups of hot coffee or tea through a crowded lunchroom.

Slipping on the ice.

Dressing an active two-year-old.

Lighting a barbecue and cooking a steak - no propane or store bought charcoal.

From my cycling days - Repairing a flat on a bicycle
Rebuilding a wheel alongside the road
Rebuilding a sprocket block alongside the road - in the rain for this one.

The morning dash - awake, shower, shave, dress, breakfast and get to the bus stop.

The advanced morning dash - as above but into automobile and navigate a crowded route to destination.

The coffee break postal run: (advanced event includes purchasing the postage)

Changing strings on a big guitar is easier than on a small classical, since most of the big ones have solid headstocks with upright string posts and the classicals are slotheads.

Good suggestions, everyone.

Peter: perhaps there should be two guitar-stringing events, since when I string my folk guitars, they try to slide off the table and commit suicide.

Re: speed napping. I recently read a book by a man who was the father of a preschool boy plus younger triplets. It was called "I Sleep at Red Lights" and he actually did.

What are bar room curls?

Then there's a nappy changing race. At my daughter-in-law's baby shower we had just such a thing only it was with dolls of course.

How about two events especially for this election year:

Jumping to conclusions

Running off at the mouth

Politicians would be excluded from the event as they are professionals!

JennyO and Padre, I love your quasi-athletic events!

What is "chucking a wobbly?" Anything like throwing a fit? (lose your temper)

Yes, leeneia, that's what 'chucking a wobbly' is all right - also known as 'having a hissy fit' or 'spitting the dummy'.

Dummy spitting would be a good Olympic event too, eh?
