Rabbi Sol, Martin, Nerd, Backstage Manager and others.

Would you please explain the meaning of Rosh Hashanah? It's more than just a New Year celebration, and I have never celebrated one with Jewish friends.

I do know that Rosh Hashanah will occur on the following days of the Gregorian calendar: Jewish Year 5765: sunset September 15, 2004 - nightfall September 17, 2004. Took me a Google search to learn that. However, I would appreciate learning more about it from you because it is fast approaching and I would like to be able to tell my students (I teach in a Catholic school).

Thank you.

Bruce M

I'd like to know too.

This holiday saved me from considerable embarrassment one time, and I know it's an important one.

(I was supposed to be a member of the corporate relay team - I was 40 years old and had no business trying to compete with the kids. But thank goodness it got cancelled because the date of the race conflicted with Rosh Hashanah - I sure hope you spelled it right up above.)

Me too, Mary.

Rabbi Sol: I'm aware you won't be able to post to this until after sundown tomorrow (Saturday). However, if you could take a little time tomorrow night to educate this old boy I would be most grateful.

Martin wrote something on this (I think it was RH; not sure), but I can't find the thread.

Bev and Jerry, you also need links probably to help you realize you don't eat a corned beef sandwich on white bread with mayo!

Brucie, this time of the year is very special to my wife and I. It gets to the very core of being Jewish and how much it means to us. It is a very spiritual day and leads up to Yom Kippur which as most know is a Day of Atonement and inner reflection.

We will spend these holidays in our synagogue with our community as we always do. Our services are beautifully done and spiritually moving.

I am not an orthodox Jew as Rabbi Sol is, but I am an observant one. He would be by far the most qualified one here to let all who wish to know, the meaning of this time of the year for all Jews in the world and why, whether we are orthodox or reformed, conservative or reconstructionist, we are all tied together as one people.

Reconstructionist Judaism is a liberal/egalitarian branch of Judaism that beleives interpreting Judaism in a contemporary context.

Basic information on the Reconstructionist Movement is available here.

Subject: RE: BS: Rosh Hashanah
From: Rabbi-Sol

My Sabbath just ended and I immediately noticed this thread. I will attempt to respond before I have to leave for Selichos (forgiveness) services which begin at 1 AM tonight in preparation for the High Holidays or Days Of Awe which Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are known as.

Although Rosh Hashanah literally translated means New Year, its celebration is completely different from the merriment that characterizes the secular New Year (January 1st). It is a very serious and somber time. Rosh Hashanah is literally Judgement Day for us. Based upon our actions of the previous year, God is judging us to determine exactly what kind of a year we are going to have during the next 12 months. Very important questions are going to be decided like "Are we going to live or die ?" "Will we be healthy or sick ?" "Will we be rich or poor ?" We are literally on trial for our lives. It is not a trial by jury. It is a trial by God himself who replays the video tape or DVD of what we did the previous year. The verdict is entered on Rosh Hashanah. We then have 10 days until the end of Yom Kippur (Day Of Attonement),until that verdict is signed and finalized. During these "Ten Days Of Repentance" we beseech God to overturn any adverse judgement that might be entered against us. Since there is no righteous person in this world who has not sinned, we must all assume that we were given the worst possible verdict, and that we must throw ourselves upon the "mercy of the court" and show true remorse and repentance for our past deeds. The sounding of the Shofar (Ram's horn), 100 times, during the Rosh Hashanah service is our awakening call to repent. Its piercing sound is supposed to send a chill through our very soul to remind us of just how serious our plight is. Prayer, Repentance, & Charity are the three things that can annul the "evil decree" and we must make every effort to practice them during this time of year. We also eat symbolic foods such as honey, the head of a fish, carrots, and a new fruit that we have not eaten the previous year. We refrain from eating any vinegar or bitter tasting foods during this time. We are asking God for a sweet year, a year where we will be the head & not the tail, and a year where our meritorious deeds will be increased. Not only Jewish people, but all of mankind is judged as well during this time. Will there be peace or war ? Famine or plenty ? Natural disasters or not ? All these vital issues will be decided at this time. Therefore, during this time, we Jews will be praying not only for ourselves but for all of you other folks out there as well. I want to take this opportunity to wish all my fellow mudcatters a "VERY HAPPY, HEALTHY, & PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR". It should be a year that brings peace to this very troubled world and an end to all bloodshed and suffering. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask and I will respond to them as best I can. SOL ZELLER

Rosh Hashanah is a 2 day holiday which takes place on Septemmber 16th and 17th, but begins at sundown on the evening of the 15th.

What is the deluge that you are expecting ? I do not any other significance for September 15th other than the fact that Estimated Income Tax has to be filed that day. SOL ZELLER

You sure are a deep and loving bunch---with such nice language and thoughts for the new year. I suppose you will try to ask forgiveness for them on the next holiday---Yom Kippur.

Another interesting thread that has devolved into something similar to dishwater swirling in circles down a drain---or is it the toilet?

Thank the cowardly Guests, Bill Hahn who vented after I wished everyone peace.

It was going good until she butted in. Why should I stand for that? As you see, I won't.

The New year starts Wed night 9/15. During that time, Jews will ask for forgiveness, but they won't let themselves be pushed around during that period either.
