Subject: Tech: Site dificulty From: *Laura* Date: 16 Sep 04 - 01:54 PM Does anyone else ever have trouble getting onto mudcat? Sometimes I can't get on at all and have to give up and wait 'til next day. It usually says the site cannot be found, or can't be displayed, and the other day it just said 'acces denied' and a load of letters and numbers (that i assume mean something to people who know about computers!!!) I always think I'll ask and then I'm always so relieved to have got on that I forget to. So.. here it is! xLx |

Subject: RE: Tech: Site dificulty From: GUEST,MMario Date: 16 Sep 04 - 01:59 PM Max had some problems with an upgrade the other day - and appears to have been ding some work today on the site. So far whenever it has "died" on us Max has managed to bring it back sooner or later. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Site dificulty From: GUEST,MMario Date: 16 Sep 04 - 02:27 PM copied from Max's post on the help forum: From: Max Date: 16-Sep-04 - 02:11 PM OK, here's a summary. I built 2 new servers over the last couple of weeks. One for databases and one for web serving. These new ones were to replace 2 very old machines doing the job now. So I've been transferring web sites and databases to the new machines. One of the new machines has Windows 2003 Advanced Server which I have never worked with before so it has been challenging to learn the ins and outs of it. Without going too much into it, the 2 new machines changed just about everything I have always been very used to. In the process of transferring things little by little, Bertha died suddenly yesterday with high pitched cry that you only hear with a hard drive physically goes bad. Also, one of the new servers had a bad Ethernet card. That made what I hoped to be a weeks worth of work happen last night. Bertha was also a DNS server that I needed, so I had to transfer that over. I still need to figure out how to get one more computer to be a backup DNS server. The good news is that once the bugs are worked out, we're much, much faster and more reliable. We're now, at least, dealing with 21st century technology. I just need to learn how it all works and get the kinks out. So in short, growing pains. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Site dificulty From: Fergie Date: 16 Sep 04 - 04:59 PM All those involved with the running of this site deserver our fulsome praise and thanks. It is by far my most favoured place on the internet. I have learned so much and have made so many contacts through Mudcat that now it is a small part of my life. Go raibh maith agaibh. Fergus |

Subject: RE: Tech: Site dificulty From: Mr Red Date: 16 Sep 04 - 05:09 PM Thanx Max & your army........ I only visit two sites regularly - the http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy and look for Mornington Crescent and here. Both "MC". And I have to say the 'cat - even with it's outages - is far more erudite (&/or silly) than the other MC. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Site dificulty From: Dave Wynn Date: 16 Sep 04 - 07:20 PM It's a blessing when its there. The guys do it for free. All I have ever done is buy a T-Shirt and support the occasional mudcat event. We need an easy way to pay for the service. Spot |

Subject: RE: Tech: Site dificulty From: Fergie Date: 18 Sep 04 - 08:02 AM Hi Uncle DaveO I looked up the fulsome word and I will be more careful in my use of it in future. My dictionary states; "Though fulsome derives originally from a word meaning abundant, its use in a positive sense to mean 'copious', 'very full' or 'lavish' should be avoided for fear of misunderstanding". I did of course use the word in it's positive sense and no offense was intended. I will rephrase what I said All those involved with the running of this site deserver abundant praise and thanks.
