I heard a great gospel-type song on a CD recently, part of the lyrics were 'You'll be an angel by and by'. Unfortunately I haven't a clue where I heard it but it's really bugging me as I would like to include it in my somewhat limited repertoire of gospel songs (consisting only of Will the Circle and All the Good Times to date!)Does anyone have the lyrics, or know where I can find them - Mudcat database does not seem to have this on. Many thanks.

Arnie

Hi, Arnie - we have Sail Away Ladies, which ends with "You'll be an angel by and by. That one has been recorded by Uncle Dave Macon, Joan Baez, the Rooftop Singers, the Kingston Trio, and others.
That's not the only possibility. This page (click) speaks of a song called "You'll Be an Angel By and By," recorded by Nellie Richards - I couldn't find out anything else about that one. Do you remember any other snippets of the song?

Joe,

Thanks for this - I don't think it's Sail Away Ladies although the version I heard also contained the words '....don't you cry'in one of the lines - I suppose as it rhymes easily with 'by and by'. I suspect that there may be a few versions of this song around. I'll wait and see if there are any other suggestions, then I'll start trawling through my CD's as I'm sure it was on one of mine but just can't find it!! If I do, I'll let you know..

Cheers

Arnie

1.)Hush, little baby; don't you cry.
You'll be an angel by an' by.
I'm gonna wear a starry crown over there.
    (cho)Over there, over there
There's a land that's fair and brightover there.
Hush, little baby; don't you cry --
You'll be an angel by an' by.
I'm gonna wear a starry crown over there.
2.)Jordan's river is chilly an' cold;
Chills the body but not the soul.
I'm gonna wear a starry crown over there.
(cho: exact rpt of prev. cho.)
Learned from an Ed McCurdy recording from the early '60s (possibly a Newport Folk Festival recording; not sure). Sorry I don't know how to get the tune to you. He was accompanying himself on guitar. This is sung beautifully, gently -- a lullaby. On the same record he did a great rendition of "Blood On The Saddle".

In practical application (a lullaby is a work song) this one works as one of a group of soft, gentle songs while holding child/infant in arms, 'specially if a rocking chair is involved. I say this as a mother of 3 and grandmother of 4. Happy singing.   Tw

P. S. May have been a 3rd verse, as I think of it.

3.)I don't know but I've been told
The streets up there are paved with gold.
I'm gonna wear a starry crown over there.
    (cho)

As before, Happy singing.   Tw

Thanks Joe and Tannywheeler (great name by the way). Anyway, I felt sufficiently guilty to trawl through my CD collection and found it! It's not trad at all, but written by Hilary Jones and is on her Burning Sun CD. The name of the track is Sail Away and begins 'There's no need to sit and cry, you'll be an angel by and by,
sail away, sail away, sailing by on the breeze, sail away over the sea...' I suppose she's based it on Sail Away Ladies but what a great version - off to chord it now.....

Speaking of great versions of "Sail Away Ladies", check out this YouTube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJvNcm2ZvnM

Excerpt from Peter, Bethany & Rufus: The Spirit of Woodstock. Bethany and Rufus play with Mady Kouyate (kora) Bong Jean Baptiste (percussion) and Sheila Anozier (dance).
Added: February 12, 2008

Bethany visits Mudcat and I hope she sees this post.

Bethany, that video is wonderful! I love the sound of your voice and I love the merging of the African kora and drum with the bass and the electric guitar. The instrumentation is wonderful!

Thanks so much for posting that video.
