Wonderful. I particularly liked the way that gravity is caused by the sound of the first letter of the Arabic alphabet (If I understood it) Do you realise how the Western world could be held to ransom if these pesky Arabs turned off gravity when it suited them by faking their accent?

Weird. Is it just me, or is that article designed to make absolutely no sense whatsoever????

I have an acquaintance who has developed quite a good reputation as a therapist/counsellor over the years. Last summer she told me she sometimes uses enneagram tests to help determine her client's "personality type" (ie strengths and weaknesses). I had no idea what she was talking about, so she directed me to this site . It does make a little more sense than the one Pied Piper linked us to.

You can take a free test to find out which type you supposedly are at that site. It's kinda fun. I turned out to be a 7, if memory serves, which did seem to "fit" quite well. The descriptions given are so generalized I didn't find it much more meaningful than a game, though.

Monograms, diagrams, trigrams (do you have them in English?), pentagrams, hexagrams, heptagrams, octograms (do you have them?), enneagrams, decagrams.

You could nearly count by them.

Heh! I have no idea whether that stuff is valid or not, and I'm certainly not inclined to spend much time trying to figure it out...but I know one thing: it was not put together by someone who was trying to reach or convince Pied Piper! :-)

I did take the free test daylia provided the link to, and it delivered an extremely accurate assessment of my personality type...so it appears that the Enneagram works rather well. I know the therapist daylia spoke of. She's smart, capable, and uses the Enneagram all the time, but I can't be bothered much with it for some reason...although...I do believe it works all right. It just doesn't fascinate me much for some reason, even though it does work.

The initial article posted by a zealous individual on a free website--when it's posted without peer review or professional oversight that usually tells me that it's lunatic fringe or otherwise a flawed theory. At best it gets a glance to sum up the content. I looked at the test posted--I've seen that before, though it doesn't always get linked with the nine-section diagram. And I think (despite the warning to take the long view) depending on my mood when I take it I've had different results. This time it had me as probably a type 3 with "arms" of 8 and 7. Hmmm. I went through it with my role as parent in mind, as mentor to the kids and how I think I do. If I were to take that test without the parent role in mind the results might be somewhat different.

Yo PP - this one's got yer name all over it ....

What We Need More Of Is Science

Verse 1

I'm a disciple of science
I know the universe is compliance with natural laws,
but many place reliance on the psuedo-science of quacks and
morons and fools because,
their educations deficient,
they put faith in omniscient,
make believe beings who control their fate,
but the Hawk aint with it, dig it,
their Holy writ aint the least bit legit,
its a bunch of bullshit.

They need to read a book that ain't so damn old old,
let reason take hold,
though truth to be told,
they're probably already too far gone,
withdrawn, the conclusion foregone.
But maybe there is still hope for the young,
if they reject the dung being slung from the tongues,
of the ignorant fools who call themselves preachers,
and listen instead to their science teachers.

Chorus
Upon blind faith they place reliance,
what we need more of is science!

Trash Talk
Uh yeah, that's right!
Fundamentalist assholes!
Screw the hole lot of them.

Verse 2
Look, I ain't thomas Dolby,
science doesn't blind me,
think you're smart? Form a line behind me,
you won't find me, truth to tell,
to be a man who suffers fools very well.
Quite the opposite in fact,
I aint got time to interact,
with crystal wearing freaks in need of a smack.
New age motherfuckers? Don't get me started,
I made more sense than them, last time I farted.

Not to put too fine a point upon it,
but the whole new age movement is full of shit.
Please allow me to elaborate,
explicate, expatiate.
from astral projection to zygomancy its a,
mish mash of idiocy.
Instead of the archaic worship of seasons,
they should explore logic and reason.

Chorus

Trash Talk
Fucking new-agers!
Is there any amount of bullshit they won't swallow?
It's two-thousand-aught-three goddammit!
When are these morons gonna join us in the 21st century?

It would have been the next ranking strength that the test showed for you. On the screen I got it was highlighted in gray or some other non-descript color. The results were ranked, anyway, and it would have been one or two below the top outcome on the graph.

Carol, my knowledge of the enneagram test is limited to what's on the introductory site I linked to in my first post, but I think it means that while you are mostly a type 9 (the Peacemaker), you also show characteristics of type 1 (the Reformer). To quote from the website;

Usually one has characteristics of one of the types that lie adjacent to one's own that are more prominent. This is called the wing. So someone who is a type 5, might have a 4 wing or a 6 wing. This may be abbreviated to "5w4" and "5w6". If one doesn't have a dominant wing, it is said that the wings are balanced.

I did the test again this morning, and came up with a totally different type than I did in July. So either I've changed quite dramatically in the last couple months, or the test itself is a better measure of passing moods than of (supposedly) stable personality traits.

daylia

Mine turned out to be a 9w8 which translates to a Peacemaker with a strong Challenger trait.

I would not say this test is total bollocks. Whether it is empirically verifiable, I am sure I can't say!! But I am not dissatisfied with the results.

Well, CarolC, "stew gage Jumbo gumbo" it is.
My hubby makes it; it is an all-day production, so he generally uses the biggest stockpot we have. Besides the okra("gumbo"), chicken, and sausage, there are a variety other veggies, spices, and herbs. I could go into more detail, but then he'd have to kill both of us. It's one of my favorite things about what we laughingly refer to as "Winter" down here.    Tw

No problem, Carol.

I just tried the shorter test, and got the same result I did in July - a 7 with "balanced wings". Interesting ... I was feeling pretty impatient by the time I finished that 14-page version earlier today. Hungry, too.

Also, according to the information given on the website it's common for 7's to mistype themselves as 3's - and I was a 3 according to the longer test this morning.

Ok - for the most accurate results, better take the longer test after breakfast!

People can clearly be a mixture of types, but there are usually one or two basic types that predominate in an individual. I appear to be either a 4 with a 5 wing...or a 5 with a 4 wing.

I noticed that the site says that the enneagram starts with an isoceles triangle, when actually the embedded triangle is equilateral. I suppose "isoceles" just sounded more mysterious than "equilateral."

I wonder what personality type that make me.

As for the test, people are so complex and variable, that any description will probably describe them, especially if you put in a few sets of conflicting characteristics. For example, Peacemaker combined with Reformer. The description works whether you are reticent or vociferous on any given day.

The Myers-Briggs is used as standard for entry to senior levels the British Civil Service, and is highly respected in the recruitment trade.
As for Enneagrams; a colleague of mine became obsessed with them and ended up jacking in her £60k job to sign on for a myriad very expensive courses which encourage an almost mystical belief in their use for diagnosis and even treatment. Dunno what she's doing now, but I still recall her earnest huckstering for this 'miracle mirror into the soul'.
