Irish dance schools in Boston

My daughter is attending Boston University. She studied Irish dance with the Kennelly School in San Francisco for a number of years and she's expressed an interest in taking a class in Boston. Anyone know of a good Irish dance school in the Boston area?

Boston has a large population of Irish descent so there is no doubt lots of venues available. Boston also has many people of Cape Breton descent and there are Cape Breton dances and ceilidhs that may be of interest to her. Cape Breton stepdance comes mainly from the Scottish Highlands (near extinct in Scotland) mixed with some Irish and French (Acadian) steps. It is very lively and similar in many ways to Irish dance.

Though I have to say that what's being marketed as "Irish dancing" at the moment, with the hideous costumes, makeup and *wigs*, and the dance styles seemingly designed by some crazed military genius, isn't within my own definition of the genre. It's like the evil leprechauns have taken over little girls.

Hi radriano, if she's going to BU she'll be right down the street from Boston College where they have an Irish Studies program directed by (still is ?) fiddler Seamus Connelly. There they would know about most schools in the area (Seamus's ex was quite the teacher). The local Comhaltas chapter would be a source of good infomation. The Boston Globe has in it's calender section (every Thursday)a dance listing as well a great folk music listing. That would be another source. Good luck & nice to say HI to you again. I'm not sure what Buddy MacMaster has to do with Irish dance schools, but if you're a fan of Cape Breton fiddling, you don't need much excuse to hear him. And you ought to go, because he's not getting any younger.

I was in Inverness, Nova Scotia for the town's centennial. One of the regular events of the Inverness Gathering is "Buddy in the Park," a very informal concert right on Main Street. Lots of enjoyment but little concert-reverence; people sitting, "visiting," mingling while Buddy played.

Off-topic, I just missed the other centennial event I really wanted to participate in: "The Little Short Fat Guy Downhill 500 Meter Race." Yep, 500 meters, downhill, with rides back to town so you wouldn't get worn out.

Hi there

I don't live in Boston (actually, my son dances in the Western Region also). Seamus Conolly would probably know, although I think there are more direct ways to get the info you need.

I would ask her current/former teacher at the Kennelly School for a recommendation, . There are a lot of schools in the Boston area and all the TCRGs have a book which lists the dance schools/teachers around the world.
