Subject: BS: Good Guests
From: Jerry Rasmussen
Date: 08 Oct 04 - 10:28 AM

Yesterday, I decided that I wanted to start this thread, and sure enough... first thing this morning, I read all the smart-ass comments that Guests posted while I were asleepin'. That's alright, though.

I know that Guests get stomped on in here regularly, and the ones that do mostly come in TO get stomped on. It's their reason for existence. That's alright, too. Everyone gets their jollies, one way or another. But, I just wanted to say a few good words about the many guests who come in to contribute something positive, named or otherwise.

In the last few days, I've enjoyed exchanging enthusiastic comments with several Guests who posted just as "Guest." I've also exhanged e-mails with a Guest who wanted some information, and it's my pleasure to copy a couple of CDs for him.

Whether Guests are coming in to get information or a "rise" out of members, it would be good if they'd add a moniker, though. Especially those who are coming in just to enjoy the company of others, so that we could refer to them by their "name." They could still be anonymous, as many members are, but it would make it easier to carry on a conversation with them.

Jerry

I've wondered whether it might be a good idea to insist on a Guest name. Not to stop Guests who want to be irritating (as they could always sign in as Guest,X or Guest,Anon) but to address all those occasions where someone loses their cookie and ends up posting as just 'Guest' by accident, often followed by a later post explaining that "Guest 09.16 is me with a lost cookie."

It's always possible to add your name, if you choose, & to be consistent in the name you use, if you choose. The problem is w/ those who don't want to be accountable for their words.

I'm sure lots of us posted as "guest" for a while before realising that Mudcat is a place to keep coming back to and therefore worth having a recognisable handle.
It may seem, on the face of it, that there is a disproportionate number of abusive guests, but I think the reality is better balanced, with lots of constructive comment and genuine queries coming from our guests.
Some of the "edgy" ones can be quite amusing as long as you remember that this is only a web-forum and that most of the aggresive posters are probably pussy-cats in 3-D.
To be fair, I'm as anonymous as any guest, being known only as C-flat, although there are a handful of people here who do know me.
In the main the guests are OK by me and our forum, and it's membership, would be the less if they were excluded.

Keep it coming, guest!

C-flat.

Many Guests are quite functional here.

The guests who are regulars who log out to pose as guests to piss and moan and howl are oviously many who think they are intellectual, always right, and for the most part, lie every chance they can get. (you know who you are, and it's sometimes pretty obvious every one else does also).

I agree, Jerry.

There are GUESTS who I enjoy very much and know from their posts who they are. Some GUEST's are just trollers but most of us filter them out since they offer very little.

But, by in large, as I have sated in the past, I like GUESTs, thank you...

Bobert

Nero Wolfe once said that "A guest is a jewel on the cushion of hospitality." (It may have been said by Fritz Brenner, his cook, but I think it was Wolfe.)

OK---a great quote that many people have hanging on their walls after a purchase at a souvenier shop---Philosophy 101 is in session----"Fish and GUESTS stink after 3 days".

My point here is that if you want to use a screen name---fine. Though I still don't get it. If you want to be a Guest---add an identifier. Otherwise one is no better than the writer of anonymous poison pen letters---which most GUESTS do. Stand behind what your write and/or say.

Thanks for your patience in perusing this,

SIGNED

The fellow who left the silver bullet---and no one thanked him, damned shame.

Martin is doing fine and mostly contributing positively these days. Maybe it's time to move beyond the past, eh?

Not sure that I agree with you Bill H, that most guests write poison-pen letters on here. Don't think I'd like to do a statistical analysis, though. Not all negative posts are poisonous, whether they are by Guests or regular members.

Far as I'm concerned, if there is a "most," "most" people respond in kind to how you treat them.

Jerry

I always put my name with my posts as Guest unless I forget to do that -- as above. When I've tried to log back on here and reset my cookie I'm told that I am already a member, but something in the host computers desn't recognize that. I'm also told there are several personal messages waiting for me to read 'em, but no!!

Jerry, thanks for makin' me a pallet on the floor of your museum office.

Thank you, leeneia. I was confusing that with a time that wWolfe complimented Fritz on something he'd said, and Fritz replied that he'd thought it up himself--and took a few hours doin' so. Can't remember what it was, though.

Jerry, some like dianavan and Ake-face cringe when respected posters like yourself say the truth about what is happening here lately.

dianavan is really doing a burn because Joe Offer deleted all the venomous stuff that she posted about my family whom she doesn't even know. terrible things about my wife and children. She really embarrassed herself just like she is doing again here in this thread.

I actually feel sorry for this women, who is so blinded with such a feminist nazi attitude, that she grabs for a man's testicles in a futile attempt to demasculate him. Won't work, lady. First learn to become a lady.

Thanks for your kind words, Jerry. I do appreciate them. And brucie's, also. It is not very difficult to have some friends at Mudcat.

Hey, Edwar A.:

Man, those were the bad old days when I couldn't offer hospitality in my home! They're long since gone, thank God and we have a Guest Room. For Guests. Don't ya just love 'em?

When I was a kid, by the way, we had a framed poem by Edward A. Guest hanging right inside the front door titled "It Takes A Heap Of Living To Make A House A Home." Have to see if I can find it... terribly maudlin and sentimental, I suppose, but it said everything I wished my home had been.

As for the comment about most Guests making negative (poisonous) comments, I notice that on this thread the negative comments have been from Members... The Guests, named and anonymous, have been fine...

Someone once said that "You get the reality you perceive." That's a wise observation and one well worth reflecting upon. There is a lot of truth in it. Negative expectations are often self-fulfilling.

Edgar, I'm sorry I used to make fun of my dad's love for your poetry when I was a kid in Detroit. I like it now, I really do. Maybe I got sentimental in my old age, or something.

Of course, there's no way of knowing whether these nameless GUEST poists come from lots of different people, or from just a few, or from one person.

Peole have an automnatic tendency to assume that, in a single thread, when they get into an argument with GUEST, it's the same GUEST who reponds, but there's no reason that should be true. On occasion we've had quite sharp squabbles between successive GUEST posts - but of course that doesn't prove anything either way.
