Thanks, Carol. Another elephant in the living room. This should be required reading for everybody. But I'll bet I can predict at least one of the responses of the Bushies: "See! Clinton did it too!" As if that matters...anybody who doesn't believe that Clinton's geopolitical agenda was right in line with the oil companies and other global corporations doesn't know how to spell NAFTA or GATT.

Aloha,
Mark

Makes the question come to mind: If an feasible alternative to fossil fuels is eventually found, what will the new technology's impact be on the oil-rich but unstable countrires? Presumably there is a heavy flow of money coming in to those countries now in return for the oil; what will happen when that oil is no longer needed and the flow of money stops?

I know. Wishful thinking and very premature. However, will the day eventually come when the 'developed' world goes on to new, much cleaner fuels while the 'undeveloped' countries continue belching unchecked and unmonitored contaminents into the air? That oil will last a LONG time if it is used only regionally.

Ebbie, I think in a lot of those countries, the money is going into the pockets of only a small number of people at the top. However, in some less developed countries, where large numbers of people don't have access to many of the things we take for granted (electricity, for example), forward thinking entrepreneurs from more developed countries are going in and marketing technology that will bring such luxuries to more people, without the need for oil.

On the radio recently, I was listening to a story about some people from some western countries going to places like India to sell solar powered lights to farmers with little or no access to electricity. The farmers were very enthusiastic about the lights. Some third world countries could possibly end up bypassing the petroleum dependent phase we're struggling to get out of altogether.
