I've got nearly the whole song, it features on James Fagan and Nancy Kerr 'Between the Dark and Light' - but there's just one little bit that I don't know.
It's about two thirds of the way through the song..
"so when they build that stockman's hall of fame and they talk of the droving game
remember the girl who was **da da da daa** and rode with the drover side by side
watched the bullocks and flayed the hide..... etc etc"

the last word rhymes with 'side' - but I can't hear it properly and I can't find it anywhere.
Does anyone know it?

xLx

Remember the girl who was bedmate and guide
Rode with the drover - side by side
Watched the bullocks, flayed the hide
Faithful wife - but never a bride

When I get time I'll post all the words
It's a wonderful song

John Williamson has a very nice recording of this song.

Better yet to hear the songwriter, Ted Egan, now the worthy 'Administrator of the Northern Territory', sing the song out bush under the star encrusted, Central Australian night skies, accompanying himself on the famed 'Fosterfone'. That's heaven on a stick!   Come to the Top Half Folk Festival in June next year at Glen Helen outside of Alice Springs, and you may hear him yourself. The web has all info re the festival.

for those who do not speak our language -

Administrator = only States have Governors, Territories can't so they have Administrators
Fosterfone - cardboard box that started life enclosing 24 cans of beer of the Fosters variety.

Gecko, is he almost at the end of his term of office?

G'day sandra,

Ted's term is three years ... so he has a few more to go ... unless he fails to rein in his habit of pointing out truths that many prefer to keep inder the carpet.

The current gripe is that the Administrator can not comment on matters concerning changes in the dealing with matters of Native Law - despite the fact that ted is more qualified in the subject than any stuffed shirt in Darwin!

Regard(les)s,

Bob

Bob, good to read your comments. More power to Ted but he's in a sticky apolitical position as the Queen's representative in the Territory. Blimey but that must be hard for him with his acute grasp of Territory politics and sense of fair play.
