Southeby's, the respected auctioneers of New York, maintains a staff of experts whose business is to provide appraisals and provide expert information about provenance and history on obscure questions like this one. I woudl recommend you call them. I believe they also have offices in London.

Try a Google search "Millais Muffet" and it will yield hundreds of websites selling posters of Litle Miss Muffet by Sir John Everett Millais. I have checked with Lady Lever Gallery and they do not have the original.
On the other hand, about seventy years ago my father purchased a painting identical to the one shown on these "poster" websites which my sister now owns. We always presumed it was simply a copy of Millais' work but the fact that I cannot establish the location of the "original" is beginning to make me hope that this one may be more important that we had considered.

I though I had seen every Millais painting but I have never heard of Little Miss Moffat, sure it isn't titled some other way?

Thanks everybody. Murphy's Law brought me to a website which mentioned
Miss Muffet and Lady Lever Art Gallery in close proximity to each other but the rest of the script was in japanese. I will check out that gallery as they already have a number of Millais' works.

Here is a page with a list of the various publican art galleries with Millais pictures in the UK. But this one doesn't appear to be among them, implying that it's either abroad, or in a private collection.

I'd have thought the Tate Gallery would be the people to ask, if this thread doesn't throw up the answer.

The answer doesn't seem to be immediately reachable on the Web -- I would try calling the British Museum or some important Birmingham museum and asking about.

I've tried all angles to find out where the original painting of Little Miss Moffat by John Everett Millais is on display. I tried some art forums but got no reply and found a thousand web sites trying to sell me a poster. I know I am sure to get a result from Mudcat. Thanks guys (and gals).
