From: red_clay

i am an amateur astronomer and have been since my early teenage years!
this is worth looking at Wednesday night!!

OCTOBER'S IDEAL LUNAR ECLIPSE

This Wednesday the 27th, the full Moon will undergo a deep total eclipse
lasting for 1 hour 22 minutes, when it will be high in the eastern sky
after dark for most observers in the Americas. Europe and much of Africa
also get a good view of the eclipse, but at a less convenient time: before
dawn on Thursday morning. Don't miss it -- this is the last total lunar
eclipse until 2007.

LUNAR ECLIPSE: Don't forget, there's a lunar eclipse this week visible from six continents. In the Americas, the event begins Wednesday night, Oct. 27th, at 9:14 p.m. EDT (6:14 p.m. PDT).

My half-Pagan, half-Catholic wife is having some sort of women's gathering Thursday night, to celebrate the eclipse and cross-quarter day. My stepson and I aren't invited, so we're going to watch a sci-fi movie on the floor above. I've threatened to turn the subwoofer up to full power.

Well, my reckoning makes it just after midnight Wednesday, lasting til about an hour before dawn Thursday (based on the fact that my bedroom window faces east and when we drew the curtains at 7.00amish this morning, it was still dark). One for the insomniacs I think...

Darkest bit seems to be about 3.00am. Best get my wooly socks out I think.

It's not an eclipse, it's A Sign.

Politically it means that Kerry (or maybe Bush, the Sign isn't real clear) will win the US election. What IS clear is that whichever wins the people lose.

Religiously, it means that Sun Myong Moon is being seem as what he is and will be going into eclipse as a religious leader. It also says something about the Pope and the Archbishop of Canterbury coming to terms and re-establishing Roman Catholicism as the state religion of England, the deposition of QE2, the return of Thomas a Becket, and the ascendancy of Diana.

Agriculturally, it would not be wise to plant root crops until the moon starts to come out of the eclipse, at which time you should plant all you can as quicly as you can (potato farmers in Idaho, for instance, have turned their planters into racing machines). At the beginning and until the exact middle it's a good time to cut calves, too.

Astrologically, the moon will be in the eleventh house and Aquila will be ascendant; Camelleopardus will be declining, and Pluto will be putting the moves on Venus while Mars glowers and drinks too much at the bar and Jupiter is laughing his ass off at the whole thing.

Scientifically -- oh, hell, something about shadows and the sun and the Earth and really, who can believe stuff like that crap?

I'm with Pauline, the best views are on the Internet. That way, it doesn't matter whether it be cloudy or cold! We just had a partial solar eclipse Oct 14th. In case y'all didn't know, solar and lunar eclipses always travel together.

That is why I keep this page handy in my weather folder favorites.

And this page is my home page.

Today's photo isn't very sexy, but often it is, and the information always fascinating and entertainingly written.

Access to stuff like this is what makes the web so wonderously amazing to me. Along with being able to be in the eye of the hurricane, or watch volcanoes erupt with a birds eye view.

Helps me keep things in proper perspective, like:

Fuck the election.

Go Red Sox.

It truly is an awe-inspiring, wonderful, mystical world we live in when you turn off the TV and radio and tune out the hysterical static of the US electoral war mongering...

Space music. Boston beat the Yankees. Lots of good movies to watch, food to eat, wine to drink.

Life is good.

Daylight saving - in the summer the 'normal' time or GMT is moved by one hour to give longer evenings. Returned to GMT at the end of October. For a period Double summer time was tried which moved two hours. I think the'jetlag' was too much. Currently some politician - can't remember his name - is suggesting different time zones for England/Wales and Scotland.

As the eclipse passes you, the Earth will silently vanish, just as the moon is gobbled up by Snathgothra, Elderich God Of Silently Vanishing Worlds. You won't notice this because you don't notice much of anything.

But there is something you can do to make Snathgothra vomit back up the world. Something known to your ancestors, who did it often before and why it is that the world isn't resting somewhere in Snathgothra's innards.

You must give Snathgothra a great big whopping dose of spiritual Ipecac. The way to do this is to make is so unpleasant to keep the world down that Snathy just brings the whole thing back up as quickly as possible.

So don't bathe today. Eat lots of food like beans and cabbage. Wear stinky clothes. But most importantly, talk about US politics. Ain't nothing that will make a world-eating Evil Spirit puke faster than hearing Bush saying that Kerry is a fraud and a wimp and Kerry claiming that Bush is a ventroliquist's dummy who couldn't find his way out of a room with an open door.

Heck, I feel the same way.

Of course, if the Red Sox win it will negate whatever you do and we'll stay down.

1.30am, it started a while ago now... and all I can see are orange clouds that haven't so much as twitched in the last hour. They're low clouds so no chance of them shifting either, the colour is from the reflection of the sodium glare lights used over much of London.

Well, it's still cloudy here in the Yook, but it's 5.30am too.... The cloud broke up a little about an hour ago, and I managed to see this strangely positioned crescent moon, sitting there like some celestial fingernail with an exquisitely bright french manicure. Alas, now the orange cloud has taken over again and it's actually getting darker.

I can't say it was worth staying up for, but I will say that being an insomniac has its unexpected benefits.

Back off to bed now, where hopefully a warming welcome awaits me from Max the cat.

It was a partly cloudy warm evening here in North Texas. We saw the eclipse up to the point when the moon was completely dark, but then the clouds moving in obscured the event until it was over. Only when I was checking to see if the doors were all locked before bed did I look out and see that the yard was once again lit by moonlight. But it was a lovely event, and the kids and I took turns with the telescope (we're still getting the hang of it) and the binoculars (a really good instrument for looking at the moon, all things considered). Thanks for bringing this to our attention, red clay.
