I've never been a Red Sox fan before, but I'm glad to see them (and, more to the point, their New England fans) finally win The Big One.

I figure, if the BoSox can win the World Series, I can certainly win the Powerball lottery!

During last night's interminable post-game discussions, I learned something very interesting about the so-called "Curse of the Bambino":

When Boston owner Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth's contract to the then-lowly New York Highlanders, he *also* sold them four or five other of his team's best players. Then, a year later, the Red Sox general manager moved to New York and remained in charge there for the next decade, assembling and maintaining the first "dynasty" in American professional sports, the renamed NY Yankees.

So, the Babe was not the only individual to abandon Boston for New York -- several of his teammates *plus his boss* made the same move. In fact, the "Highlanders" may have become the "Yankess" because so many of them were transplanted New Englanders!

Ouch, I didn't mean to get anyone upset, just a little joke you know and after all it's only a game!

Just so you know, I became a Yankee fan after arriving in New York from UK back in 1975. I worked with someone who was a avid fan and he took it upon himself to teach me about Baseball as we didn't play it back home. So, by default I became a Yankee fan too after a season of making On Site client visits to the South Bronx and drinking that lousy beer they used to sell there (Reingold or Shaefer I can't recall now).

So anyway, no offense meant to any non Yankee fans out there.

Peace.........Bob.

THE RED SOX WIN!!!! THE RED SOX WIN!!!!

I am still in shock. Went out to a friend's farm for the big game (they have a television set) and so had a great view of the game, and quick dashes out to the porch between innings to look at the eclipse.   We were a mixed age group, from sixties down to twelve or so, and explaining our lack of trust in the Sox was made difficult by the win. They just don't understand our paranoia. Mick, thanks for keeping the faith. It's hard for those of us who have been so traumatized.

I expect that Rick Fielding, Proctor H Pages Jr and Sr, and Driscoll Reid (and thousands of other Sox fans who have not seen the boys win in their lifetime) are up there celebrating big time. I just hope that they are interceding in the elections as well

And Robert, doesn't the curse just transfer to the Yankees? That was my understanding.

Go Cubs! Go Cubs! Go Cubs!

I grew up in mid-Wisconsin with no way to see pro ball for real (Milwaukee was too far away). The very first reallio-trulio baseball game I ever got to see was a Cubs-Pirates double-header when I was 12. It was the Cubs of Ernie Banks, Billie Williams, Ron Santo et al. The Cubs won both games, and I lost my heart (and mind).

I watched the first half of the 8th inning last night, and got to see Pujols' incredible throw to home. After watching Boston leave three men on, I figured I'd better stop watching or I'd jinx them...

If Boston can make it, why not the Cubs? Dying Cub Fan's Last Request

Aside from the BoSox, Yankees and Twins chat, baseball will be much better off when we can seriously discuss a Pirates/Devil Rays World Series, or Royals/Blue Jays series. Big market teams simply re-tool, rather than having to re-build. That's just the way the system works, and until that changes, baseball lacks a certain amount of credibility. However, this is the day after the World Series, so let the Red Sox fans rejoice. Getting off the mat, in their dance with the Yanks, was a testament to their resolve. How many days to Spring Training?

NO WAY! The Twins are going to beat the Red Sox AND the Yankees, and take the pennant next year!

Since when do sports NOT have anything to do with nationalism? They have EVERTHING to do with nationalism! But if you are looking for the preferred "nationalism" sport in the US, you'd be talking football, not baseball. For the best writing ever on the subject of football and nationalism, read Hunter Thompson's "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail". Best insights into a presidential campaign ever written (with the lowdown and dirty on Nixon, the Republican National Committee, the Committee to Re-elect, and the Washington Redskins).

Baseball, in the US, is known as the "national pasttime" or some such as I recall. Basketball is the most popular sport in the US these days though, I think anyway, in terms of the numbers of spectators both in the arenas, and on TV.

Sorry Kendall, sports has nothing to do with "nationalism", at least not when it comes to talking baseball. You can feel something in your soul from sports. The Red Sox gave a great example that you can't give up. There is hope, nothing is impossible. You can gain self-respect and a feeling of accomplishment. You learn what it means to be part of a community.   There are many lessons if you want to look at it on that level.

I agree that cops and teachers are paid peanuts, but I would not hold it against any artist or athlete for earning what someone is willing to pay.   I also admire athletes who use their position to help others. Not everyone in sports is a money grabbing victim of "testosterone poisoning" and it isn't very fair to perpetuate stereotypes.

GUEST, that Cards first baseman was Albert Pujols, and I agree that was one of the best plays of the game. He will win some gold gloves in his career.

His detractors call him poo-holes, which is more or less how you pronounce his name.   In fact, ESPN.com has this embarrassing selection of information about him on their site (see the last item):

Age: 24
Height: 6-3
Weight: 225 lbs.
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
Pos: 1B
Born: January 16, 1980
Full Name: Jose Albert Pujols
College: Maple Woods (MO) CC
Experience: 4 years
2004 Salary: $7,000,000
Pronounced: POO-holes

I'm one of those overworked and underpaid educators, and while I agree that some star athletes are overpaid, I know most of them aren't, and that it is the greedy owners much more than the greedy players, who are the problem, and have been ever since baseball was professionally organized. There have been baseball scandals as long as we've had baseball, including in your youth, Kendall.

So, why the sour grapes today? Because you don't enjoy baseball anymore? Then why spoil the thread for everybody else?

That was not Jacqui who posted above.
I loved to play baseball when I was a boy, I listened to the games on radio then, but I don't know, I guess I simply outgrew it.
Like everything else in America, it is driven by money and that bugs me. They pay a cop or a teacher peanuts and those glandular cases millions to throw or kick a ball around.
Also, I don't see how you can compare sports to music. I understand music, it is something you feel in your soul, whereas, sports is a form of nationalism...us against them, etc. Testosterone poisoning it looks like to me.

Soccer is completely different from baseball.   The teams no longer are "local". Sure, there may be a few local talent who are scouted in the farm teams, but with free-agency and global scouting, the talent pool is much wider.

It really doesn't matter where the players are from, I don't think anyone in the U.S. pays attention to that on a club level.

Hey Jerry, when I was a teenager in the 60s, I was able to get Pirate games on the radio. Being a Torontonian, this was a big deal, and listening to Bob Prince was always a special treat. Speaking of the Yanks/Bucs World Series in the early 60s, I know a life long Yankee fan who, despite all their World Series titles, still gets very upset at having lost that year to the Pirates. In the games New York won, they bombed Pirate pitching, but couldn't close the deal. Back in those days, aside from Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson was the greatest pitcher I ever saw. The Tiger/Cardinal World Series, which took place later in the decade, also sticks out in my memory. Mickey Lolich won three games.

I do see your point jacqui c. In fact, I wonder why I still watch baseball. I go to a few games during the season, but nowadays I go to the minor leagues here in St. Paul, as they have outdoor, old time baseball, whereas the Twins are big stadium corporate baseball.

But I watched the Twins again this year when they got into the play offs. I sometimes watch the play offs, sometimes don't. I watched the ALC last year and this year. This year the Twins lost to the stinkin' Yankees, and because the Yankees are the team everybody loves to hate (including me), and because of the competition between the Yankees and the Red Sox, I watched. The come back games played by Boston against the Yankees were good baseball watching. But actually, the ALC series between the Twins and Yankees was even more exciting baseball that the Yankees/Red Sox series was. The Twins played their hearts out against the Yankees, and the games went into lots of extra innings--very exciting baseball.

The reason I still watch baseball, but not other American sports like hockey and football, is because I just love baseball. I watch the basketball playoffs usually too, even though my home town team NEVER gets in the playoffs. I wish we had decent soccer in the US. I watch the women's team, because they are the only ones worth following for the US. We just got a new soccer team here, the Minnesota Thunder. We went to a few of their games this summer, and had a blast! I love the game.

I guess you have to enjoy watching really high quality athletic performances to watch professional sports. I watch a lot of the Olympics for the same reason. There is a profound beauty to that level of athletic performance, just like there is with a high level of music performance.

Sorry Jacqui! It is something that really can't be explained, especially if you have preconceived notions aobut "silly ball kicking, hitting throwing thing".

Sports, music and art represent passion to many people. The reasons we choose to identify with these pastimes are complex. I would not knock something that someone else finds pleasure and solace in.

The Red Sox represent New England.

hell Kendall (I'm assuming that's you as I don't think Jacqui is quite into the "we mainers" stage yet) - a lot of *Massachusetts* folk have an intense antipathy for Boston. And why do we keep rooting for a team that has year in and year out disapointed us so frequently?

Most Mainers have an intense dislike for Massachusettes in general and Boston in particular, yet we cheer for the Red Sox. Why? I'll bet none of the players are natives of Boston, and it looks to me like the the best team is made up of the most expensive players.
I just don't get it.

I'm happy for all the fans of the New England area. It's certainly about time they didn't have to check into Heartbreak Hotel. The World Series was disappointing from a dramatic standpoint, but good pitching always stops good hitting. The Cards met a very hot BoSox ballclub and they weren't to be denied. Congrats to the Beantowners! When all is said and done, I think Curt Schilling was the real story in the playoffs, and World Series. Without him, Boston doesn't get the job done.

Probably it IS Kerry's turn.

Every time that the Red Sox have won the pennant in an election year, the Democrats have taken the White House. And this year the Sox not only took the pennant, but they blew "The Curse of the Bambino" out of the water.

A minor correction, Ebbie. "Taking the pennant" means winning the championship of the National League or the American League. The two teams that win the pennant compete in the World Series. And yes, I know it's not really a "world" series and I know that millions of people around the world, including many Mudcatters, don't care a fig about any of this. But hey, after all the cricket threads we've had... Besides, I'm a Phillies fan. But I'm very happy the Sox won.

Guest/Boab, it is the 'World' Series in American major league baseball. The Boston Red Socks are the BoSox,naturally.

The Red Sox, not to be confused with 'the Reds' who are the 'Cincinnatt Reds' another baseball team, had not won a World Series since 1918.

Where the magic comes in is that in the playoffs they had been down by 3 games to nothing against the New York Yankees and now have gone on to take the pennant in four straight wins against the St. Louis Cardinals.

There has long been talk of a 'curse' upon the BoSox, so now the curse is lifted and happy days are here again. And may this be a harbinger of the joy in Massachusetts a week from now.

Boab, Boston Red Sox, a baseball team, just won the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. It's their first WS win in something like 86 years. At that time, they'd traded Babe Ruth to another team. He was so angry, he supposedly cursed them and said they'd never win another WS without him. Tonight they broke "the curse!"

I can no longer say, "The Red Sox killed my Dad, and they're coming after me." When I heard that line I started to write a song about it, but now, thankfully, it is too late. I became aware I was a Sox fan in 1952, so I suffered for a relatively few years, the Sox being decades into their winless streak by then. It seems every 80+ year old Sox fan in Boston has been interviewed on tv these last weeks. Anyone who is not from New England could possibly understand what tonight meant...Cubs fans, you are on your own!

Four games to none. It was a boring final game, but who really cares? The 86-year old 'Curse of the Bambino' is over, the moon had a large reddish shadow the last time I looked, Boston looks like it's one HUGE party, and I can go to bed now.

Amazing!   What an incredible night. From the greatest comeback in the history of sports - anwhere - to finally breaking the supposed curse. I'm a Met's fan, but this is very sweet!!!

It was a great game! From the 5th inning on, Night Owl *watched* it with us via telephone. Being a MA native, she was up on all of the info on the team, their coach, history, etc. We had a fun time and oh, boy! Did they deserve to win or what?! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Babe Ruth!!
