Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Give Good Gifts (Shaker hymn) From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Dec 13 - 05:48 PM Hi, Leeneia - You asked if this song would be added to the Digital Tradition, and that's a question I can't answer. Dick Greenhaus and Susan Friedman make those choices. I format them and tag them in the threads, but it's up to Dick and Susan to do the choosing. I do my best to index songs in the Forum, so they can be found easily with the Filter. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Give Good Gifts (Shaker hymn) From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 Dec 13 - 11:19 AM Thanks for posting those, Joe. They are in the key of E-flat, not familiar territory for us. Joe, will these be added to the Digital Tradition? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Give Good Gifts (Shaker hymn) From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Dec 13 - 11:48 PM I found a nice recording of the song by the Rose Ensemble here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkNu0oM1HZY This group uses the lyrics Jim posted above, singing the first part twice, and then the second part twice. Animaterra, did you record it, and might you be willing to post it? I'm set up to post MIDI, MP3, and graphics files. -Joe- joe@mudcat.org |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Give Good Gifts (Shaker hymn) From: GUEST,Gregg P. Date: 07 Jan 13 - 12:44 AM Beautiful music and lyrics. The Pro Arte Singers & IU Chamber Choir version (Paul Hillier) is absolutely gorgeous. Coventry Carol and Jesus Christ The Apple Tree are also wonderfully delightful. "I wonder as I wander...". Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Give Good Gifts (Shaker hymn) From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 11 Aug 11 - 07:58 AM Yes, thanks, Bonnie, and I have the page from the link Jim Dixon linked above. But it has the first line beginning with a "1." which implies there are other verses- but no further verses are included! On Paul Hilliar's beautiful cd, Home to Thanksgiving they just sing the verse twice and the chorus twice and that's it. I may have to resort to doing the same! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Give Good Gifts (Shaker hymn) From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 10 Aug 11 - 07:35 PM More Shaker titles here. There are some duplications which seem to be different editions of the same collection (among the harp stuff I've also seen different scans of the same book). http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=shaker%20music%20AND%20mediatype%3Atexts |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Give Good Gifts (Shaker hymn) From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 10 Aug 11 - 07:27 PM Archive.org's great (loads of harp music on there, Leenia, tho most of it classical, as far as I've seen). You guys may already know this, but if not: you can download this whole book as a PDF too, as well as saving the individual pages from the online reader as images. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Give Good Gifts (Shaker hymn) From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 10 Aug 11 - 08:38 AM Looking for the rest of the verses? Took me long enough, but I'm finally transcribing this for women's chorus, planning to use it in my chorus this season! |

Subject: Lyr Add: GIVE GOOD GIFTS (Shaker hymn) From: Jim Dixon Date: 05 Feb 11 - 11:56 PM From Original Shaker Music, Published by the North Family of Mt. Lebanon, NY, Volume 2 (New York: Wm. A. Pond & Company, 1893), page 117: (That book has musical notation for 4 voices.) GIVE GOOD GIFTS Give good gifts one to another, Peace, joy and comfort gladly bestow; Harbor no ill 'gainst sister or brother, Smooth life's journey, as you onward go. Broad as the sunshine, free as the showers, So shed an influence, blessing to prove; Give for the noblest of efforts your pow'rs; Blest and be blest, is the law of love. |
Subject: Give good gifts one to another From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 28 Oct 04 - 12:26 PM It's a Shaker hymn, supposedly in the Mt. Lebanon hymnal which I don't have. I can't find it at Cyberhymnal. Does anyone have a choral arrangement? Thanks! Allison |
