Not a Draft

"HONOLULU - A veteran of the first Persian Gulf War (news - web sites) is suing the Army after it ordered him to report for duty 13 years after he was honorably discharged from active duty and eight years after he left the reserves.

"Kauai resident David Miyasato received word of his reactivation in September, but says he believes he completed his eight-year obligation to the Army long ago."

Maybe they'll call up George Bush since he has a couple years left on his obligation...

Reactivate George Bush - Sounds right to me. Bush should be given the same equipment as the soldiers in the new Iraqi army. Lets see how long he believes in democracy for Iraq.

Well, I see Ebbie beat me to posting this item on how "we will not have a draft" may be interpreted in real life...

Another way, of course, frogprince, (I like your name) is just by dropping standards in recruitment. Right now they are requiring a diploma and the ability to pass comprehensive tests. Easy to lower those standards. And plenty of applicants- as long as jobs in the US are hard to find.

This news is NO surprise to me. I suspect, tho I don't know, that he was a medic. The services are hurting for medics now ... something about expecting a lot of casualties soon. I was telling Bride Judy this morning that if you are a vet, and you were an officer, your intial contract binds you to recall until you are 65 years old. Merry xmas, Bob

(Aug. 2, 2006) - The Army has begun training the oldest recruits in its history, the result of a concerted effort to fill ranks depleted during the Iraq war.

In June, five months after it raised the enlistment age limit from 35 to just shy of 40, the Army raised it to just under 42.

To accommodate the older soldiers, the Army has lowered the minimum physical requirements needed to pass basic training.

The first group of older recruits is going through basic training here. So far, only five people 40 and older - and 324 age 35 and older - have enlisted, Army records show.

A local report indicated that one of the first "over 40" enlistments was a woman.

I believe the report quoted her husband as something to the effect of:

"WHAT THE F****????"

You mean so he can complete his tour of not-showing-up?

I think he should have to start over from scratch since he blew it off the first time.

My brother, a 20+ year vet who sometimes works as a mall security guard, knows a lady at the mall who had once been a Marine linguist in Arabic. They ordered her to report, in uniform, because they needed her skills. She shrugged, put on the old uniform, and reported as ordered -- and was thanked and told to go home because at 70 she really was too old.
