No real excuse s6k

I use ieSpell - which links into MSIE and gives you a button to check the spelling (so it is at least consistent!) in the submit window in an instant.

Otherwise all my posts here would have 'teh' for 'the'...

I got an 'O' level in English Language and, of course, it's a little like hanging wallpaper. Do it properly and it's seamless. Your parents come visiting and inspect your work, telling you that a professional couldn't do it better. Your wife thinks you're wonderful and all of a sudden you're on a promise. Had you done a poor job she wouldn't allow you near a paste bucket again never mind the bedroom. So there you are. Take care over your spelling and make the family happy. I still have my 'O' level certificates framed and hanging on the bedroom wall just in case there's a bad seam to cover up. Low wattage light bulbs are another alternative but then she thinks you've got something to hide. Had americans done 'O' levels we wouldn't be having this conversation now.

Everyone mis spells a word or two here and there, but if your command of the language is so poor that you can't get your thoughts across, is that MY fault?

And Americans tend to say - or write - 'dreamed' rather than 'dreamt'. And 'thunked' rather than 'thought'.

I researched this for you Ake, and learned that spelt is a subspecies of wheat. But the really interesting thing I learned while researching is that "Hung" is the 789th most popular given name for males in the United States.

"Just how useful are spell checkers? They don't spell in english (english as in english english as opposed to foreign english)"

piffle! good spell checkers allow you to choose which language you want it checked in...you simply download the dictionary of your choice if you wish to have extra letters in your words. (color-colour)

and *daylia*..*grin*...my only claim to 'genius' to knowing where to look for ways to cheat save time.

here is Show html to allow the HTML to show without executing.

and here is a wonderful little 'as you type' spell checker . You can edit it to spell things YOUR way, and have a little window open to 'beep' you if you make a mistake....or not. I have 5-6 different spell checkers in various applications, some of which work on autopilot, and some only when I tell them to.

Boab, you can make that red underlining go away if you're working in MS Word; go to the Tools menu, click on Language, and then select your favoured variant of English from the drop-down list, which is very comprehensive!

Many standard variations in English spelling (e.g., colour/color, kidnaped/kidnapped) arise from 19th-century American efforts at language-rationalization that were disseminated and popularized by Mr. Noah Webster and his dictionaries. Similar campaigns were waged with great success in Germany and the Scandinavian countries. There are two big reasons (and many small reasons) why Britain was rationalization-proof: first, during the 19th century the educated classes learned grammar and syntax in Latin and Greek, not English; and, second, the first truly comprehensive and reliable dictionary of British English was the Oxford, which operates on the basis of historical precendent -- that is, it traces the development of words and their meanings from their appearance in written sources. Oxford doesn't DO reform.

Canadians, being bombarded from both sides, have to use both sets of dictionaries and therefore have twice as much opportunity to get it wrong.

boab,

in most spellcheckers you can pick UK English as the language. In MS Word, you'll find a menu called "tools" at the top. From there select "language," "set language" and "English (UK)" If you then hit the "default" button then the spellchecker will check your future documents according to UK standards. Neat, huh?

Spare a wee thought for those of us who are plagued by red underlining by a Yankee spellchecker which persists in perpetuating the adoption of "American english". Much of the language modification I do approve, [maneuver, program and one or two others spring to mind] but some irritate. We write "cadmium", "Barium", "Radium" etc. So where the hell did this "Aluminum"come from? Either of two sources, I think ;either from the adoption of sheer lazy spelling or from the phonetic adaption of dialectic pronunciation. Color, favor, flavor, humor I can take, even if sloppy spelling was the probable origin. That's how language has evolved in most societies, I reckon [and there's an Americanism!]
But jeeze! Spare us the red lines, when our spelling according to the Oxford dictionary is correct!

Near as I can tell, the 'etiquette' if the internet sorta hints at this...

The quicker the form of communication, the less and less spelling is a matter of concern...

When composing an email, or coding ones web-site for instance, there's no excuse... Bad spelling is slightly more tolerated on a message board where it's easy enough to spell check your contribution before you hit the 'post' or 'submit' button...   In a chat room, there should be even MORE room for error... Some folks even think that typos are an excuse for 'humour'... On an Instant Messenger, the gloves seem to be off! The kids have even invented their own language to IM with...

Charmion, italics and bold are created by using very simple html tags around the text you want highlighted.

Scroll down to 'physical styles' at the link. If I type the tags here, they won't show -- all you'll see is bold and italics.

Unless of course you're a genius like BillD -- how DO you do that, Bill?

I try to watch my spelling, but sometimes due to time contraints I have to hurry.

I don't really care that much if a word here or there is spelled wrong.

As far as posting what we can here because we can, deal with it Clinton. This web site is not set up for your personal specifications. Some crap I don't even open. Others I do. No one is twisting your bony arm.

I find it more fun to post to threads where the poster thinks that it is the most serious and thought provoking stuff on the face of the earth. It's so much fun to show them that it isn't.

As I said, except -- Ah, fallibility! -- "So honest spelling mistakes should _not_ embarrass you; they're normal." (I wish I knew how other people put boldface and italic effects in their posts!)

Subject: RE: This is Music Shite, Not Spelling Shite

I confess to being a spelling freak; it really matters to me. Grammar matters, too, especially punctuation, and bad syntax makes me dizzy. Because I care about these things, I learned to type well very early in life. And I still make mistakes, being human and therefore thoroughly fallible.

In my experience (which is extensive because I'm an editor by trade), most consistently bad spellers are auditory learners, and typically have less than wonderful visual recall. *daylia*'s post includes a list of errors I see every day, and they are all normal mistakes made by "ear" people functioning in an "eye" medium. English is awful for such people because it is so spectacularly irrational and inconsistent, especially for Canadians who have both British and American spelling conventions to confuse them.

So honest spelling mistakes should embarrass you; they're normal.

Carelessness is another matter, however. Is it really so difficult to proof-read and correct your post before hitting the "Submit Message" button? If you're that pressed for time, perhaps you shouldn't be reading the Mudcat at all!

Spelling is one thing--then there are typos.
I can spell, it's my keyboarding that is error-prone. Spell check would help, but tnen I would have to go to another program and do a cut and paste. In the meantime I have a tendency to type that I live in Alaksa, use the definite article teh and miss the capital for I--i. The last might be a good idea.
But this is one of the funniest threads in a long time.

Spellchecks help, but they don't catch all mistakes ( "bare" instead of "bear" etc). And not everyone has the time to make "drafts" of all their posts. So maybe a Mudcat advance warning system would be better. People could post a list their usual spelling *crimes* for everyone to see. After that, you've been duly warned, so it's Read At Your Own Risk.

Ok I'll start. Words that always give me trouble include -

* "seperate"   Oops, that's "separate". Is it just me, or do they both look wrong somehow?

* "bigoted"    SRS insists on "bigotted". To me, "bigotted" looks more like what Abraham did to Isaac.

* "sincerely"   I sincereley wish the word hadn't been invented.

* "similar"    Or is it similiar? I always clutch at the "liar" part.

* "familiar"    See above

* "unraveled"   Should be "unravelled"?

* "gorgeous"    Too many vowels? But "gorgous" looks wrong too.

Ok, gotta got to run. Feel free to add your own personal *crimes* to the list if you like.

daylia

PS better start a whole new website for Sir jOhn's list ;-)

The spelling on this site gives me no problem. However...there are some quite narrow minded folk around, who never of course make mistakes themselves because they consider themselves perfect and try to appear so. I would much rather read some of the spelling mistakes and laugh....than read some of the opinionated rubbish that some folk write.......even about spelling.
Best wishes.

I'm not that concerned with someone's spelling. It does bother me when people start threads about the most ridiculous trivial matters. And that people want to contribute to them. I don't care about William Shatner. I don't care if your rolling papers don't stick. I don't care about how you feel about women in sandwich shops. I don't care about what's "shit".

Just because you CAN post about anything doesn't mean you SHOULD. It's a waste of good band space.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: This is Music Shite, Not Spelling Shite

Why? There's one simple reason: when spelling interferes with the usability of this site for the music then there is a good reason to complain. One function of this site is talk and in that spelling does not matter. Another function is storage of refindable information and spelling still does matter here.

So I do not mind at all the way the people from Hull (or elsewhere) spell in their BS posts, for I would never try to search for these threads. But if I cannot refind a thread about an Irish group because the poster has spelt them 'Cheiftans' in the thread title it matters for me.

(As an aside, there is even a situation in which I prefer spelling errors: I prefer John from Hull to make spelling errors in the titles of his threads, so I know what to expect without opening them. In one of his last threads he has made no spelling error in the title and that has induced me to open the thread unnecessarily. In this case the correct spelling has led me astray.)

Wolfgang
