Subject: Lyr Req: They Sent a Woman (Enoch Kent?)
From: Barbara
Date: 10 Nov 04 - 11:30 PM

I've been singing this one along with the CD, but there's one verse I can't understand (and a few other bits), the one aboot the fairmer.
Here's what I do have:
Blessings,
Barbara

THEY SENT A WOMAN
(Enoch Kent?)

I ca'd for the dochter, Ah telephon'd taday,
The dochter was an awfa' tyme a'comin
I ca'd for the dochter, an' Ahm sorry for tae say,
The dochter neverr cam', he (they?) sent a woman.
Well, Ah let herrrr make me betterrrr
And I asked her if she could no get intah nursin'
I ca'd for the dochter, an when she went away
I could'na understand why she was cursin'

I ca'd for a pilot, Ah telephon'd taday,
The pilot was an awfa' tyme a'comin
I ca'd for a pilot, an' Ahm sorry for tae say,
The pilot neverr cam', they sent a woman.
Well, she roar'd off and she soar'd off
And then come in an' made a pairfect landin'
But why she wasna workin' as an air hostess
Is a way beyond my understandin'

I ca'd for the polis, Ah telephon'd taday,
The polis was an awfa' tyme a'comin
I ca'd for the polis, an' Ahm sorry for tae say,
The polis neverr cam', they sent a woman.
Well, she caught the lad who took tha pay(?)
*******? from the office doon on High Street
I ca'd for the polis, ****************?
I wouldna have her workin' here on my street

I ca'd for the fairmerr, Ah telephon'd taday,
The fairmerr was an awfa' tyme a'comin
I ca'd for the fairmerr, an' Ahm sorry for tae say,
The fairmerr neverr cam', they sent a woman.
Well, the cows were *******? the pigs were ****?
An' ************************* bidden,
An' when I asked if her faither was home in bed,
Twas then that I landed in the midden.

Ah prayed to the good Lord,
Ah prayed to Him tahday
I prayed to the good Lord, and holy, holy hey!
When the good lord replied, it was a woman!
She view'd me, she howdy-dood me,
And she said, me lad you're a luttle slow in lairrnin'
************ (something about a lesson?)
Next tyme as a woman you'rre retairnin'

Ahm comin' back as a woman.

OK, here's my second try. But I still haven't a clue what he's saying about the cows and sows in the fairmer verse.
Blessings,
Barbara

THEY SENT A WOMAN
(Enoch Kent)

Sent for the dochter,Ah telephon'd the day,
The dochter was an awfae' tyme a'comin
Oh, Ah sent for the dochter, but sorry for tae say,
A dochter neverr came, they sent a woman.
But Ah let herrrr make me betterrrr
Then Ah asked her could she no get intae nursin'
Well, Ah sent for the dochter, but when she went away
Ah could'nae understand why she was cursin'

Ah sent for a pilot, Ah telephon'd the day,
The pilot was an awfae' tyme a'comin
Oh, Ah sent for the pilot, but sorry for tae say,
A pilot neverr cam', they sent a woman.
But she roar'd off and she soar'd off
An' then came in an' made a pairfect landin'
But why she wasnae workin' as an air hostess
Is a way beyond ma understandin'

Ah sent for the polis, oh Ah telephon'd the day,
The polis was an awfae' tyme a'comin
Oh, Ah sent for the polis, but sorry for tae say,
A polis neverr came, they sent a woman.
But she nabbed the boy that grabbed the pay
Robb'd frae the office in the High Street
But still Ah felt that she should be dealt (?)
Ah wouldnae want her on the beat in my street

I sent for the fairmerr, oh, Ah telephon'd the day,
A fairmerr was an awfae' tyme a'comin
Oh, Ah sent for the fairmerr, but sorry for tae say,
A fairmerr neverr came', they sent a woman.
Well, the cows were and the sows were
The vurry best o cap awa their bidden?
And all I did was ask "Is yer faither hame in bed",
It was then that Ah landed in the midden.

So Ah prayed to God Almighty, Ah prayed to Him the day
The Ged Lord was an awfae time a comin'
Oh, I prayed to God Almighty, an' Glory, holy, hey!
The Great Almighty came, she was a woman
An' She view'd me, She howdy-dood me,
She says, ma lad, it's true that you're no lairrnin'
So here's a luttle lesson, boy, you're comin' back agayn
An' this tyme as a woman you're retairnin'

Ahm comin' back, bu' as a woman.

They Sent A Wumman^^
Lyrics/Music: Nancy Nicolson

Ah sent for the doctor, Ah telephoned the day
The doctor wis an affa time a-comin
Ah sent for the doctor, bit sorry for tae say
A doctor never came, they sent a wumman
But Ah let her make me better
Then Ah asked her could she no get intae nursin
Ah sent for the doctor, bit when she went away
Ah couldnae understan why she wis cursin

Ah sent for the pilot, Ah telephoned the day
The pilot wis an affa time a-comin
Ah sent for the doctor, bit sorry for tae say
A pilot never came, they sent a wumman
But she roared off an she soared off
Then in she came an made a perfect landin
Bit why she simply widnae juist hae been an air hostess
Ah've got tae say is past ma understandin

Ah sent for the polis, Ah telephoned the day
The polis wis an affa time a-comin
Ah sent for the polis, bit sorry for tae say
A polis never came, they sent a wumman
But she nabbed the boy that grabbed the
Payroll fae the office in the High Street
But still Ah felt she should be telt it's no lassie's job
Ah widnae wint her on the beat in my street

Ah sent for the fairmer, Ah telephoned the day
The fairmer wis an affa time a-comin
Ah sent for the fairmer, bit sorry for tae say
A fairmer never came, they sent a wumman
Bit her coos were an her soos were
The very best, the top of a' the biddin
An a' Ah did wis ask her hed her faither steyed at hame
The next Ah kent wis Ah wis in the midden

So Ah prayed til God Almichty, Ah prayed til him the day
The guid Lord wis an affa time a-comin
Ah prayed til God Almichty, an Glori-Glori-Ay
The Great Almichty came, she wis a wumman
An she viewed me, She How-d'ye-do-ed me

Thanks George! I'll make sure I get the attribution right, too. Nancy Nicolson. I was wondering how a man would have that much insight into the little things that drive females nuts.
I took my car in today to the mechanic to have the oil changed, my husband's standing beside me to give me a ride home, and I say, "the tire pressure's set too high, could you take it down to 35lbs.?"
"32lbs," says the spouse, "You want it set to 32"
It's numbers. Numbers must be a guy thing. If I say the water is 6 inches on the road, he will say it couldn't have been more than four. If I say a tree is 20 ft tall, he'll say it's at least 30. And every last damn time I call one of those seed-bearing jobbits off the doug fir a "Pine cone" he corrects me, and says "fir cone".
Amazing what it takes to float his boat, and that I let it get to me.
Blessings,
Barbara

Maybe the site is badly designed. I deleted the /lyrics.html and got a site for Second Avenue Records, "a Canadian independent record label with Tim Harrison and Enoch Kent on its roster." If you go to the 'Artists' page and click on 'Enoch Kent's website' the address is the one given above but it takes you back to the Second Avenue welcome site. Looks like this could provide a lifelong job!

They seem to say the web-site is under construction. Sounds like they're re-working it. IF you do a google search on the title as I gave it, you'll get the information, and it'll have a cache (copy) of the page you can look at, which is what I did.

Of course, I kept a copy of that page with all the rest of the lyrics. If that page is no longer accessible via Google, let me know and I can e-mail it to you.

I'd hoped to find a video of Nancy singing her song on Edinburgh FC's website but we don't have one. There are however several videos there of Nancy singing some of the other excellent songs she's written - go to Edinburgh FC's video library and just search for "Nancy".

If I ever get round to it* i can photocopy this song and tune of Nancy's..... Edinburgh Folk Club made a book of most of her songs, tunes and memories as a 75th Birthday tribute.
Nancy has moved back to Caithness, living in Wick - she still travels back to Embry from time to time.
(*Hope someone else does it first!!!)

Btw: chords? Nancy mainly sang a capella, but accompanied herself on a few songs with her one-row melodeon: not this one, though!

I've not checked the words that were posted earlier (perhaps Tattie Bogle can do that? and if incorrect - she or I can post the correct version!)
Here is a not very good scan of the tune:

NANCY They Sent a Wumman tune

Hmmmm - I am not managing to copy and paste the tune - - have to say I am pretty rubbish about most of these modern thiingies - so shall try again tomorrow - or maybe Tattie B is more competent than I?!

The words are pretty much as posted by George Seto back in November 04: if anything that version is mair Scots even than the one in the book, but any differences are so minor that they are not worth worrying about. It also says to reprise the first 4 lines at the end of the song.
The score of the tune is in the book. The publishers are at www.gracenotepublications.co.uk ISBN no 978-1-907676-86-4

Gallus, I don't think anyone other than moderators (ie, Joe) can upload images to the 'Cat -- try getting in touch with him.

Otherwise, websites like Imgur offer easy ways to host the image elsewhere.

It's probably in copyright, so I wouldn't do it: hence encouraging people to buy the book if they really want it, or learn it by ear from the videos suggested.
And by the way, there is no h in Nancy's surname: it's NICOLSON. Can a Mudelf correct that, please?
