Subject: BS: China, oil and human rights From: Shanghaiceltic Date: 19 Nov 04 - 12:44 AM This appreared in todays Online Telegraph. While the rest of the world has been watching the middle east and the threats to oil supplies China has been quietly working away in the background to ensure it has enough oil for the moment to meet its energy needs. As you will see in the article this even means dealing with the leaders in Sudan, Iran and I know from other sources in Iraq. China often takes a stand that it will not interfere in a countries polictics viz it treats the problems in Sudan as nothing for it to get involved in but as a matter only for Sudan's government. This is by no means taking the moral high ground. Instead it expects other countries to accept that China's presence in Tibet and it's threats against Taiwan as matters which other countries goverments should neither comment on or get involved in. It has made full use of the US's campaign against Muslim terrorists to arrest and detain many muslims who live peacefully in Xinjiang under the excuse they were trained in Afghanistan. As a result it is hard for the US and UK to put pressure on the goverment in Beijing to help get those ,who on the most part are innocent, set free. If other countries do criticise China then often the response in the press here (all govt controlled and heavily so) is to spin it as an attack on the Motherland and whip up some nationalistic fervour amongst the population here. That also helps take their focus off the unrest that has become quite widepsread in many cities in China in the last few months. China has a lot to offer but it is a pity that the Goverment wont see fit to support its own people with laws that have teeth and that will further improve peoples lives here. China need your oil.. |
