Does anyone out there have the correct chords for the song recorded by Bernard Cribbins - I believe produced by George Martin - entitled 'Hole-in-the-Ground'?

Thanks

Bernard Cribbins Hole in the ground Lyrics Index
There I was, a-digging this hole
A hole in the ground, so big and sort of round it was
There was I, digging it deep
It was flat at at the bottom and the sides were steep
When along, comes this bloke in a bowler which he lifted and scratched his head
Well we looked down the hole, poor demented soul and he said

Do you mind if I make a suggestion?

Don't dig there, dig it elsewhere
Your digging it round and it ought to be square
The shape of it's wrong, it's much much too long
And you can't put hole wher a hole don't belong

I ask, what a liberty eh
Nearly bashed him right in the bowler

Well there was I, stood in me hole
Shovelling earth for all I was worth
There was him, standing up there
So grand and official with his nose in the air
So I gave him a look sort of sideways and I leaned on my shvel and sighed

Well I lit me a fag and having took a drag I replied

I just couldnít bear, to dig it elsewhere
I'm digging it round co's I donít want it square
And if you disagree it don't bother me
Thatís the place where the holes gonna be

Well there we were, disscussing this hole
A hole in the groud so big and sort of round
Well it's not there now, the groundrs all flat
And beneath it is the bloke in the bowler hat

And that's that

Lordy, that brings back memories.

Unexpectedly and deceptively sophisticated for a catchy pop song IMHO, and it would really require the skills of M.Ted to do justice to the chords, but this would be my take on it, from memory and not having listened to it for forty odd years ...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hole in the Ground by Bernard Cribbins

(C)Well (Am)there I(A7)was, a-(Am)digging this (A7)hole
A (Am)hole in the ground, so(D9th)big and sort of round it was and
(G)There was I, (G7)digging it (G6th)deep
It was (C)flat at the bottom (Gdim)and the (F)sides (G)were steep
When (D9th)along, comes this bloke in a bowler which he lifted and scratched his (G)head
Well he (D9th)looked down the hole, poor demented soul and he (G)said

[spoken line, no chords: Do you mind if I make a suggestion?]

(C)Don't dig there, dig it elsewhere
Your (Am)digging it round and it ought to be square
The(G) shape of it's wrong, it's much much too long
And you (Eb)can't put a (B)hole where a(Eb) hole don't be(C)long

[spoken line, no chords:
I ask, what a liberty, eh?
Nearly bashed him right in the bowler]

Well there was I, stood in me hole
Shovelling earth for all I was worth
There was him, standing up there
So grand and official with his nose in the air
So I gave him a look sort of sideways and I leaned on my shovel and sighed

Well I lit me a fag and having took a drag I replied

I just couldn't bear, to dig it elsewhere
I'm digging it round 'cos I don't want it square
And if you disagree it don't bother me
Cos that's the place where the holes gonna be

Well there we were, discussing this hole
A hole in the ground so big and sort of round
Well it's not there now, the ground's all flat
And beneath it is the bloke in the bowler hat

---------------------------------------------------------------------

If anybody ever did try to play this on the guitar, I would suggest that the Am be played up at the fifth fret, and the Am - A7 sequence played by moving the left hand up and down a couple of frets.

Actually, having read over what I have written I am not at all sure that I am recollecting the melody correctly at certain points, so I have ordered a copy of the "Best of Bernard Cribbins" from Amazon (a CD I have always meant to get anyway) and will submit corrections if my memnory is indeed playing me up.

From the sheet music, transposed to C

Intro C G7+ C G7+

(C6)There I (G7+)was, a-(C6)digging this (G7+)hole
A (C6)hole in the (E7)ground, so(Am7) big and sort of (D7)round it was
(G7)There was I, (Dm)digging (G+)it (C)deep
It was(B7) flat at at the bottom and the (E)sides were steep
When a(Em7)long, (A7)comes this (F7)bloke in a bowler which he (G7)lifted and scratched his (C)head
(G7+)Oh he(C6) looked down the(G9+) hole, (C6)poor demented (A9)soul and he (Dm7)said (G7)

(Do you mind if I make a suggestion?)

(C)Don't dig it (G7+)there, (C)dig it else(G7+)where
It (C6)shouldn't be (G7+)round it (C)ought to be square
The (F6)shape of it's wrong, it's (E7)much too long
(Eb)And you (D)can't put a hole where a (G7+)hole don't belong

I ask, what a liberty eh
Nearly bashed him right in the bowler

Well there was I, stood in me hole
Shovelling earth for all I was worth
There was him, standing up there
So grand and official with his nose in the air
So I gave him a look sort of sideways and I leaned on my shovel and sighed

Well I lit me a fag and having took a drag I replied

I just couldnít bear, to dig it elsewhere
I'm digging it round co's I donít want it square
And if you disagree it don't bother me
Thatís the place where the holes gonna be

Well (C6)there we (G7+)were, dis(C6)cussing this(G7+) hole
(C6)hole in the (E7)ground so (Am7)big and sort of round it was
it's (G7)not there now, the (Bb7)ground's all(A7) flat
And (Dm)beneath it is the bloke in the (D[b9])bow(G7)ler (C)hat (G7)

And (F7)that's (C)that

I think I would modify the chords somewhat...

Stu

(Dashing Away With A) Smoothing Iron

'Twas on the Monday morning,
When I beheld my darling.
She looked so neat and charming,
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-Oh!
Washing her linen-Oh!
Dashing away with a smoothing iron,
She stole my hear away.

'Twas on the Tuesday morning,
When I beheld my darling.
She looked so neat and charming,
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-Oh!
Shaking her linen-Oh!
Dashing away with a smoothing iron,
She stole my hear away.

'Twas on the Wednesday morning,
When I beheld my darling.
She looked so neat and charming,
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-Oh!
Drying her linen-Oh!
Dashing away with a smoothing iron,
She stole my hear away.

'Twas on the Thursday morning,
When I beheld my darling.
She looked so neat and charming,
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-Oh!
Airing her linen-Oh!
Dashing away with a smoothing iron,
She stole my hear away.

'Twas on the Friday morning,
When I beheld my darling.
She looked so neat and charming,
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-Oh!
Ironing her linen-Oh!
Dashing away with a smoothing iron,
She stole my hear away.

'Twas on the Saturday morning,
When I beheld my darling.
She looked so neat and charming,
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-Oh!
Folding her linen-Oh!
Dashing away with a smoothing iron,
She stole my hear away.

'Twas on the Sunday morning,
When I beheld my darling.
She looked so neat and charming,
In every high degree.
She looked so neat and nimble-Oh!
Wearing her linen-Oh!
Dashing away with a smoothing iron,
She stole my hear away.
