Subject: Ceilidh Band needed.....................
From: GUEST,guy.carr@gartner.com

Hi all - I'm marrying a Scottish girl next year in Carlisle and am inn charge of organising the entertainment - she's doing the dress and flowers !!!

Due to her Scottish heritage and because I think it'll be a great laugh, I want to have a Ceilidh.

Can anyone recommend any bands from the area (North West England or South-West Scotland) or a really decent band who are willing to travel.

Thanks for any responses.

Guy

Sorcha Dorcha can come from New York, if you can send the airfair and feed Amanda hagis.
Cheers

Remember that ceilidh now means different things in Scotland and England - a Scottish ceilidh is basically an informal concert where people can get up and dance about to tune sets or sit and listen to songs. South of the border ceilidh is used as an alternative to Barn Dance for an evening of structured dancing with a caller, with maybe a couple of listeneing sets or a song to let the dancers get their breath back. make sure you know what sort of ceilidh she wants, and make sure the band knows what sort of ceilidh you want.

Congratulations and best wishes to you both

Andrew

Flying Chaucers might be interested if you pay our fares from London & accomodation. Aren't Ceilidh Minogue based in Scotland or the North? Having grabbed one of the best names around they should be good.

As Mr Crane driver says be careful you get the right type of band. If they know what they are doing dance wise you might want a scottish "reels band" but if you are looking for a Scottish Flavour dance with a caller most English based Ceilidh bands can do that.

Check it out because sometimes the Scots don't like having a caller and are reluctant to do any dances they don't know - you may need a band thats flexible enough to do a bit of both to keep everyone happy but then you need to make sure there are enough people there to allow everyone to dance.

Sarah

Guy,

Stradivarious are listed on the aforementioned http://www.scottishdance.net/bands/index.html or on http://www.stradivarious.co.uk

We're based in the midlands but can travel, given the right arrangements.

We played for some of the Scottish workshops and balls at Sidmouth in 2000 and 2003 and often do formal RSCDS Scottish dances and less formal ceilidhs (but only dance, not song) for weddings etc.

All depends on the date and availability.

Mitch

Hi Guy,

I can thoroughly recommend Fagins Pocket from Carlisle - they're an excellent (and very dancer-friendly) band. Web page here:

Wassail!

Isn't that amazing, Viking! I spoke to the same band about this, and they said they had already seen the thread, but had rather stylishly emailed the originator directly rather than toss their hat in the ring here. There are some fine musicians who lurk here.

I think they would be the ideal band, and they have a fiddle player who is out of this world.
