Subject: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: Fiolar Date: 07 Dec 04 - 08:37 AM Watching the BBC tribute to the late Fred Dibnah recently, I was intrigued with the music which used to iontroduce his programmes. Does any body recall the name of the music? It sounded like a classical piece. Thanks. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: GUEST,Sam The Man Date: 28 Apr 05 - 05:15 PM I too was trying to find the name of Fred Dibnah's signature tune which is played by the Black Dyke Band and can be heard at the beginning of the tv series 'Made in Britain". But what is it called? The answer given previously by Sir John didn't register anywhere when I tried to find it on the web. Can anyone assist? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: Liz the Squeak Date: 29 Apr 05 - 03:00 AM There is nothing on the Black Dyke website about doing the theme for Fred Dibnah's programme, but it is their 150th anniversary this year. If it was a BBC programme (I don't remember watching it.. afraid I'm not one of his biggest fans), then an Email to the BBC might bring you some joy.... they're pretty good at that sort of query. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: Micca Date: 29 Apr 05 - 07:30 AM I thought it sounded remarkably like the German Tune " Mein hutte has Drei ecken" |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: Micca Date: 29 Apr 05 - 08:09 AM which seems to be widespread as a childrens game song , "My hat has three corners" as i found when I googled!!! but No midi |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: GUEST,Sam Bate Date: 01 May 05 - 12:04 PM Thanks for your replies - the 'Three Hats' tip finally found it for me by surfing the web. It is called 'Carnival of Venice' and is played by the Black Dyke Mills Brass Band on the tv series, which I have now managed to download - quite an intersting whimsical piece for anyone who maybe interested. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: GUEST,Graham Date: 06 Aug 11 - 11:41 AM The Carnival of Venice is not the earliest tune used for the series. There is a different one on early programmes that I haven't identified. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: Bernard Date: 06 Aug 11 - 03:33 PM I beg to differ - the very first programme dating back to 1979 (1980 BAFTA Best Documentary Programme winner) has Briccialdi's "The Carnival of Venice" performed by James Galway...! Find it here... the theme is at the end of Part 6 (there is no opening theme). My parents' house is two hundred yards away from the Two Cats, the local nickname for Fred's house which was built as a gatehouse to the Earl of Bradford's estate in Bolton, Lancs. The nickname came about because the Earl of Bradford's coat of arms is depicted in relief as a plaque on the lefthand gable - and it shows two lions rampant... The plaque on the right-hand gable displays the year the gatehouse was built - 1854, if I recall correctly... I can check when I'm round there tomorrow afternoon! Sadly, there is an ugly alarm bell box marring the right hand gable! The house is unusual in that it looks from the road to be a bungalow - but there is another floor below road level, which opens onto the garden/workshop area. It has been opened as the 'Fred Dibnah Heritage Centre' - the link to the website above will take you to more details. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 06 Aug 11 - 05:28 PM James Galway plays a lovely version of Carnival in Venice. No-one seems to know who composed it originally, but it was at least as far back as 18th Century. Many composers (eg Paganini) have produced variations of it. (Adding all those twiddly bits I expect!) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: Bernard Date: 06 Aug 11 - 06:07 PM Again, I beg to differ... 'Carnival of Venice' (Il Carnevale di Venezia - Opus 78) was written by Guilio Briccialdi (1818-1881)... (link) ;o) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: Peter C Date: 07 Aug 11 - 09:26 AM The dots for 'When Daylight Shines' may be easier to find than for Carnival of Venice - almost the same tune! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Fred Dibnah programme signature tune From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 07 Aug 11 - 04:24 PM Yes, Bernard, Il Carnivale di Venezia was indeed composed by Briccialdi, but the original tune, (often used for the song "Mein Hutte hat drei Ecke) was in itself taken from an old Neapolitan canzonetta, which began "O cara mamma mia...". which is at least 200 years old. Nobody knows who originally wrote that, or exactly when. Paganini composed the variations on it (he was quite fond of 'variations'!) in the early 19th century. So this little tune has quite a long and intriguingly complex history. |
