I figured that Mudcatters would probably know: Is there a source where I can donate 2 used cell phones so that someone who may need it (them?) can have one. I just upgraded my service, and got a new one with all sorts of bells and whistles - but NO camera!

Usually Radio Shack will take them and give them to shelters for victims of domestic abuse. mg

In the UK Oxfam shops will take them in for recycling.

Hi, Padre - I understand that cel phones will make contact with 911, even after the regular service contract has expired. I understand the nuns I work for at the women's center have given them to elderly people for emergency help contacts - but the giveaway wasn't popular and we had a lot of phones left over that I gave to a cel phone company for recycling. I understand most of the cel phone firms will take old phones for recycling. The batteries require special disposal, and the cel phone companies will take care of that.

Funny that this pops up tonight - we just had an expose on the ABC TV 7:30 Report that most Aussie mobile phones handed in for recycling are being dumped in landfill by the recycling company. Planet Ark has made a fuss about it. Seven million sold this year, only 100,000 handed in for recycling anyway....

Thanks to those who wrote - I will check with RS and see if they will take them. Hate to think of them just gathering dust in a drawer somewhere.

The municipal government where I live collects used cell phones and donates them to women who have been victims of domestic violence. They have collection boxes at community centers. I was a recipient of one of these used cell phones and I certainly appreciated it.

If your Radio Shack doesn't take them, as others have noted already, it is likely that either your local police department or domestic violence center will.

Seems to me that Red Cross also takes them..........but am SURE that Radio shack does.

Please check with local school district as well.

I think my kids' school district recycles them (for money, along with print cartridges and other odd stuff). It may help them with a bit of fund raising.

In the UK a company called www.tonerdoner.co.uk take in used mobiles and printer cartridges for recycling with proceeds to charities. They even supply post paid bags or organise collection for large quantities.

I don't know about phones but this is the Mercy Corps. They do take old computers, tools, construction materials, no clothing...wiring, plastic sheeting.

This is located in Portland, OR. Once we figure out that we can and should send "stuff" as well as money to places that need them, lots of problems will be solved.
