Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Ship Building Men; Harry Robertson. From: Bob Bolton Date: 12 Dec 04 - 09:34 PM G'day beetle cat, That particular Harry Robertson song would be The Ship-repairing men ... but the LP Whale Chasing Men provides a full narrative of (much of) the life of a whaler / ship fitter ... and starts with a dialogue and song about the building and fit-out of a new whaler in Scotland. I'll scan that in from the book accompanying the LP (and its current re-release CD) ... fairly late tonight, since I have my Concert Party mob marshalled to play for a Christmas Party for a bunch of finnicky folk dancers tonight! Regards, Bob (Stewie: Yes - I do have the original Tradition ... a loose copy and my archive bound set - but the book is more reliable! |

Subject: ADD: Ship Repairing Men (Harry Robertson) From: Hrothgar Date: 13 Dec 04 - 05:30 AM SHIP REPAIRING MEN Words & Music: Harry Robertson To the workshops off we go, toolkits heavy in our hands, To the big ship that's come in from a trip to foreign lands Salty streaks of rust don't matter, for her moorings hold her tight, And we'll work to fix her engines all the day and half the night CHORUS: Don't wait up for me this evening, I'll be out all night again, Working on the Brisbane River with the ship repairing men. Oil fired boilers throb with power drinking up the furnace heat Water turns to driving steam to make her engines beat; But the feed pump's sob and wail to us cuts through all other sounds And sings a song of triumph for the valves that we have ground CHORUS Engine bearings that knocked and hammered in the wild and stormy seas Will be machined and fitted till they run with silent ease, And the winch that rattles every time the piston turns her shaft Will hum along and sing its song to men skilled in their craft. CHORUS When you see an ocean liner glide between the river banks, And the captain in his gold braid orders men of lesser ranks, Have you ever thought that stately craft might never sail again If it wasn't for the toil and sweat of ship repairing men? CHORUS |

Subject: ADD: Casting Off (Harry Robertson) From: Bob Bolton Date: 13 Dec 04 - 07:35 AM G'day again Beetle Cat, I see Hrothgar has given you the words to Harry Robertson's Ship Repairing Men. The early parts of the record/book I mentioned turn out to be just Harry's spoken (if rhymed ... ) narrative about picking up the new whaling craft ... and have no details of the making ... or the makers: Casting Off © Harry Robertson The autumn sky wi' colours tinged, as darkness dawns its coat, Outlines the four wee whaling ships that sway and gently float; One moment mooring ropes are slack - then tighten in the breeze That kills the warmth of the day and chills the River Tees. Just newly.built and tested - fitted out by shipyard men, The whaling crews are ready now to go to sea again, Familiar farewells finished to the people that ye know, The last song sung and embraces clung, it's now ye have to go. A sharp command, the engines turn and ropes are cast adrift, And on the jetty waving friends grow smaller in the mist, The whalers tender feeling - false gruffness fails to hide As we head towards Antarctica - upon a running tide. Whaling Songs of Harry Robertson, Albert Publications, Sydney, 1972, p.8. Regards, Bob |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Ship Building Men; Harry Robertson. From: Bob Bolton Date: 14 Dec 04 - 06:04 AM G'day John, I have both versions of The Ship repairing Men... the Tradition Magazine one and that published in Harry's book. I didn't bother to post the tune since the song is really outside beetle cat's brief ... and the words I posted are not sung. Regards, Bob |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Ship Building Men; Harry Robertson. From: John in Brisbane Date: 14 Dec 04 - 09:55 PM Bob, some time ago I notated the 100 Songs from the VFMC Joy Durst Collection, which includes this song I'll dig out the MIDI and post it to Joe or MMario, I've loaned my copy of Joy Durst out and my 100 MIDIs are named according to the song number. If anyone else has a Joy Durst could you please let me know the page number for this song - otherwise I'll just have to play them all. Knowing my luck it'll be the last one I try. Regards, John |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Ship Building Men; Harry Robertso From: GUEST,dBranno Date: 14 Dec 04 - 10:43 PM Page 106 of the Joy Durst (the bound 1980 reprint). Also in Therese Radic 'Songs of Australian working Life' Good to see Harry's songs standing well the test of time. Words just slightly different to Hrrothgarr's. Great version the Affley and Mike Ball. Ripper playing of the English concer... I have Harry's own version on owld tape; who knows, enough interest and anything could happen. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Ship Building Men; Harry Robertson. From: Bob Bolton Date: 15 Dec 04 - 12:11 AM G'day John in Brisbane, I do have the tune notated ... and I think I have submitted it (in the old - no longer Mudcat-supported - MIDItext format) to a Mudcat thread - some time back. I just did not re-post because Ship Repairing Men did not really seem to be what beetle cat was after. What Joy Durst Book are you working from ... the original spring binder version or the yellow softback ... ? I have both, and I can e-mail an OCR scan of the contents page to you (presuming the ~lycos address I have is still current. Rather disappointed to see this one hasn't yet made it into the DT ... I'm sure it was posted. Regards, Bob |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Ship Building Men; Harry Robertso From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 15 Dec 04 - 05:33 AM Branno. "I have Harry's own version on owld tape; who knows, enough interest and anything could happen". does this mean you have more treasures to reissue?? I'm interested , even tho CD space is getting full, but the tape drawers will be emptied over the Christmas break giving me lots more space (tho some will need replacing by CDs or copying onto CD) sandra |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Ship Building Men; Harry Robertso From: GUEST,dBranno Date: 15 Dec 04 - 09:43 AM Sandra. There are 17 items from Harry on a legendary Mick Flanagan tape (from whence some of the Declan CD- 2 years old now, AND he has a granddaughter!)also Colin Dryden. It would be wunnerful to publish more of this material, but it all takes time. Rita has a copy of Harry's stuff from this tape, and a few people have sent me copies of Colin's! I have fair selection of Colin, from other sources, hopefully to come out next year. Spring binder, Bob! Do you have the loose leaves too?!! Regards to y'all BrannO |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Ship Building Men; Harry Robertson. From: Bob Bolton Date: 15 Dec 04 - 07:00 PM G'day BrannO, My original Joy Durst Collection is a set of loose leaves ... but came in dark green, cloth-bound book with a sort of "toggling-action binder', rather than a simple "spring" arrangement. It was a long time back, and I seem to remember that binder was part of the package - although it does not have anything printed on it. I presume it was just bought in as a suitable holder for the (Gestetner-printed ... ?) sheets. It's been bloody handy, over the years, because I can just pop out whatever song is needed / requested ... and run off a good quality photocopy. (Taking a 'traditional folkie' attitude to copyright on most of the material ... a far proportion of which is directly lifted from Singabout / BMC sources - without attribution - anyway. As far as genuine copyright material goes, like Harry's fine songs, I have preferred to give people a copy of a published source - making sure the ownership is clear - and hope they'll sing it, which is what Harry would want. If they do go off and record it ... well, they'll know who should get the royalties!) Regards, Bob |
