We were having a discussion about old times in the pub yesterday, and one of the topics that came up were the wallets that were used by amongst others, milkman, insurance collectors, tally men etc.
These seemed magic to kids at the time as I remember, they were two pieces of card/leather joined together by elastic with it crossed on one side, and two straight lines on the other and you layed the notes in then turned them inside out and hey presto the notes were under the elastic.

Does anyone else remember these, and is it possible to still get them, or anyone know how to make one.

Thanks in advance, I know I can rely on some catter out there.

I can tell you how to make them, but not where to buy them. I can do it from memory, but I'll look up an article from some books, I think.

The essense of the scheme is that there are three panels, where a traditional wallet would just have two, and the stringing is set up in such a way that it can be opened so that two panels lie on the left and the third on the right, or vice-versa.

OK, I've made one from memory. Here's how to do it using a couple of rolex cards and wool. Get that working first before you try leather and gold chains!

Lay the two cards side by side, touching long edges. Make a cross on the left hand card long enough to cross the entire card and overlap the other about an inch or so. Fix top and bottom parts on the FRONT LEFT of the left hand card so that it naturally falls to the LEFT of the left hand hard, and then on the BACK LEFT of the right hand card.

Next put the two horizontals in place, fixing them to the RIGHT of the RIGHT hand card, so they naturally fall to the RIGHT, then pull then over the front of the right hand card and fix then to the BACK RIGHT of the left hand card.

You may then want to put additional cards in place to hide all the sticky tape, etc, so that all that is visible is the two sides, the crossed tape and the stright tape.

If you have followed all of this correctly, you should now be able to open the wallet from either the front or rear edge.
