Actually, the thing that made Star Trek so memorable, quite aside from Mr Shatner's idiosyncratic acting style was this: Star Trek was practically the only TV show in history to present a hypothetical future for humanity that was strongly positive and forward-looking in nature. In that sense, Star Trek occupies an enormously important place in popular culture. They presented a drama about a future society NOT run by money, a society NOT dominated by commercial advertising, a society where there was no poverty, where everyone had everything material that they could possibly want, where everyone had free access to an excellent education, where all races and varieties of sentient beings were treated as equals in every way!!!

This was revolutionary stuff. This was a total philosophical departure from the crass materialism and selfishness of our present society.

It was a neo-con's nightmare, and a social idealist's dream...and it IS entirely possible. It could be achieved on a worldwide basis at any time people decided to achieve it.

That is what made Star Trek a brilliant and truly valuable show.

Star Trek was to TV what the Beatles were to pop music...a breath of fresh air, and a message of Love.

If people don't see that, it might be because they just didn't bother to look. Star Trek was one of the most subversive and revolutionary shows that has ever aired on TV, because it dared to hope that the better side of humanity could win out and turn this planet into a single united community, rather than a bunch of feuding, medieval nation-states run by corrupt politicians and greedy robber barons.

You underestimate Trekkies, Ron. At your peril, too, I believe.

I really could not care, this is just fun. It is a shame that truly talented actors are not recognized but Shatner is simply what he is. Star Trek was a diversion that occupied the attention of many people who needed to escape.   The reality is that he is a lousy actor who makes people happy. There is nothing really wrong with that.

In just a few years Star Trek and Shatner will be all but forgotten. Just like old-time radio, there will always be a few people who look back fondly but it will be largely forgotten.

LOL! Thanks, Carol. I just love it when Big Bill wins awards. It drives people like Ron Olesko up the wall.

I wonder...who has had a bigger effect on western civilization? Abe Lincoln, Leonardo Da Vinci, Albert Einstein, or William Shatner?

Shatner doesn't seem to be quIte the correct spelling somehow.

I'll beam myself up Little Hawk!

if you can sell the idea that William Shatner is a talented actor, why are you not a very rich man?

Little Hawk chooses to use his powers for good instead of evil.

He started out as an interesting actor -- The Andersonville Trial was quite good. Then he used the transporter too much. He really does look creepy now.

Peter T.

"not subtle enough to grasp the depth of Shatner's acting technique"

A corpse has more emotion than Shatner.

Just what I was about to say to you, Ron. Look, we have courses at the WSSBA to help people out with this sort of thing. The fact is, a lot of people are just not subtle enough to grasp the depth of Shatner's acting technique. They are victims of a superficial culture. A 6 month course at the WSSBA can open your eyes to the nuances of the Shatner Technique that will completely revolutionize your view of Life Itself. Don't hesitate! Enroll now.

Well, if Bill can win an award for his acting then it's time for me to get back in the recording studio and put together a new CD. Wonder if we can get it released in time for this year's Grammy nominations? Surely the world is ready for a new digitally enhanced version of "Bilbo Baggins".

Ammendment: Huff not Tuff!
I actually was putting a DVD on last night and happened to catch the announcement for the Golden Globe Awards by accident just as the nominations were being read for Mr Shatner's Group.
I have no clue what Huff (Tuff) is or Boston Legal for that matter.
I have heard of "the Sopranos" but have never seen it...
I am not a big TV watcher...so for all "Huff" Fans out there please except my apologies...LOL
Huff means Sulking in Scotland..ie: Whit ur yi in the Huff aboot noo!
So you see Tuff made more sense to me now I am here in Maine...
Like you all needed to know this...but hey it's 5.30am here and I have been up since 3am...can't sleep....so......:>)

Surely, Shatner's trouserings already contain sufficient golden globes for an ordinary mortal?

It was a shoe-in. He was typecast in the role. I'm surprised somebody didn't write him the into the Sopranos. He could be their attorney, or hit man-whaddevuh.

We saw him this evening on one of the celebrity poker shows on cable/satellite. He's a very funny man, and not a bad poker player. He's very good in the role of Denny Crain (sp?) in Boston Legal, but I think they don't use him nearly enough on that show.

... don't get too excited. The Golden Globes were once awarded to Pia Zadora, who has as much talent as Shatner. What an awful actor he is! Who did he sleep with to get this award?

Yes, this is for Little Hawk.
Mr Shatner has just won a Golden Globe for his role in Boston Legal...winning out over fellow nominees from the Sopranos and Tuff.
